Gig Log: Surprises! Why it is important to do a proper advance on gigs.
Surprises!
Aren't surprises fun? Well, maybe as a gift, but not on a gig! It's important to advance a gig to get an understanding not only of expectations of the client, but what equipment to bring, etc to meet those expectations and budget. Sometimes, we don't always get accurate details. This was one of those times...
Along those lines, how do we react? Are we a service industry? While the customer isn't always right, do we try to be accommodating with in reason?

    I see both sides of this, easy to work with easier to get work... however quite a few people dont know (or care) how much extra work it is to be accommodating. Its a case by case situation, but you definitely have to look out for yourself. Ask them in a nice way that this wasnt planned for and could they "help" you out monetarily or in trade of some-kind, maybe a higher charge in the future. I personally look at the fact that if they dont value my time and effort and at the least offer the customarily thanks and Im sorry, its time to think about why you are there...

    Are there any speakers you could recommend that are similar in size, volume, and coverage to your Meyer ultra x40's? I would like to just be able to use one per side. I see that RCF makes a few wide dispersion compact speakers similar to the Meyer ultra x40's. Thanks

    • @inthemixls
      @inthemixls 3 дня назад

      I think the most comparable would be Danley SM80s, but they are not powered, weigh a little more, and don't have the dispersion. I still have dbtechnologies IG3Ts and IG4Ts. They definitely pack a punch, and can be arrayed for larger gigs (2 per side). Till I got the Meyers, I used those. The main reason for getting the Meyers was to have more SPL on a pole without having to double up (groundstack or fly) the IGs. Another option to look at could be the RCF TTW4A's. They have about a 100 degree dispersion, but weigh about 67 lbs.

    HELLO MY FRIEND, HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE FOR THIS WORK? TKS!!!

  • @FrankPavlik-i1o
    @FrankPavlik-i1o 14 дней назад

    We are Meyer Dealers. I want to comment on your closing statements. Nearly all consoles have standard outputs of +21-22 including the x and m32. They will all drive an x40 to enough level where if you need more, you are not using the right tool for the job. The x40 has plenty for any sane level running on a standard console. The processing will get you slightly more at a cost that will make your head spin. Meyer "assumes" you will be using their processing which in itself is a substantial cost. We have measured as well another independent and with processing the x40 hit 130 and 129db respectively. These are not boxes and systems for the casual user or hobbyist. They sound absolutely amazing but there are better options that offer more flexibility and useable output for these types of users. We use a lot of Yamaha and have DSR and DZR that we sell and send out. We feel they offer the same or more output and return on investment is much better. Audio quality is great. Martin CDD Live and RCF TT are a step up from the Yamaha and will easily compete with x40 and do what it needs to out of the box at a lower price. The x40 is great for size and weight. I don't need to speak on the audio quality. If you are not regularly doing gigs that justify the expense of Meyer and all of its add-ons, There are far more practical options. Businesses should use gear based on quality and return, not always what is a premium name brand or price point. I will close with this, a lot of people want powered speakers these days. They are great no doubt but they are overlooking the simple fact that high end amplifiers offer all the goods and processing to optimally drive a loudspeaker system to its fullest and do it very efficiently. Keep up the great work! Frank

    • @inthemixls
      @inthemixls 14 дней назад

      Thank you Frank, I appreciate you commenting. As I said in another comment, in hindsight, I could have gone with my doubled up dbTechnologies IG3T stacked on the stage, but there's the tradeoff of time and labor to rig/fly vs throwing a speaker on a pole. That's one of the considerations that drove me to the X40's. Love Yamaha products (I use their DXS subs, and of course, their covers), and I used to have RCF TTL6As. That said, I was super impressed with just how well the X40s did on this gig. Coverage to the back was great, if not in SPL, definitely in clarity. After this event, I have a better understanding of their capacity and limits. I also appreciate your input on the processing and cost vs return. Thank you again for watching and commenting!

      Budget and convivence. Hindsight, double stacked IGs may have been more ideal in terms of SPL. It takes additional time to setup and teardown the VMB lifts to fly them. Although, hindsight again, the stage was high enough I could have done a ground stack on stage.

    Would doubling the X40s solve the max out problem?

    • @inthemixls
      @inthemixls 15 дней назад

      No, the X40's have a wide dispersion and are a point source speaker. Adding additional speakers would have introduced comb filtering. The draw back to the X40's is that there are no adjustments on the back of them, they are designed to be driven at +24 to get the full SPL out of them. Unfortunately the DL32 and M/X series don't output at that level. So the limitation wasn't on the speakers, it was more on the Mixer not providing enough output without clipping. Meyer provides a Galaxy system processor to match the output, but it is pricey! As I mentioned in another comment, in hindsight I probably should have used double IG3Ts stacked on stage.

      @@inthemixls I use QSC K12.2s. One per side for most shows but will double up for large outdoor shows (about the size you did). I turn the inner two in (dance floor) and the outer two point straight out. The outer two are also 2 to 3 feet higher than the inner two. Comb filtering has not been an issue. I also use a m32c/DL32.

      @@inthemixls Actually you would need approximately +22.2 to drive them to their max. There really isn't a console option to make them work as advertised. Allen & Heath SQ and Avantis are +22, HD96 is +21 as well as most premium consoles. It is not an issue relating directly to the x and m series mixers not having enough output, there is plenty. You should still be able get these silly loud where if you more output, you more rig. Meyer assumes you are running these speakers and systems with their processing which you will pay an absolute premium for. As an example, a Galaxy 408 comes in around $7k dealer. If you want a complete system its going to cost you. 2 x x40 and a pair of something like 900lcf with carts/covers will roll in about $30,000. That is not even considering processing. At a minimum, If you can get decent pricing on all this, you are around $35k for two tops, two subs, and proper processing. We are dealers for Meyer. The x40 is a great box and sounds amazing but unless you are going all out, you will never get the max performance out of them. If you do not have a solid ROI, there are much better speakers for the money. Would you believe if I told you, we get better performance with yamaha DZR and Marting CDD Live and the ROI is much better. On a side note, we have measured our x40 independently and came in around 130db max spl before limiting took full effect with Galaxy Processing. There was another independent test where that box hit 129db. The M-Noise ratings are meh IMO. We demoed the x80 recently and while it sounds larger, volume is just a touch more than x40 with a much higher Price. I would never recommend these types of boxes to casual and smaller providers.

    I'm a lighting guy, I noticed the fixtures stop on the pans. Go get yourself some WDMX and larger antennas. Always have line of site. I use it all the time. Lights looked good, I was shocked, considering the board and small lights. Great video. If you have any lighting questions please feel free to ask.

      I appreciate your comment, exactly the type of info I was hoping to see. For now, I may have found a solution that involves a DMX to Artnet converter that also connects via Wifi to a router. That combined with an old DMXKing node I had sitting around seem to be working out for now. I will definitely look into the WDMX though for the bigger gigs! Thanks for watching!
