A minimalist approach to reef keeping that you can replicate | Hardware, circulation and filtration
Просмотров 39 тыс.3 года назад
Welcome back! Today I want to put down a content release schedule for the next few episodes and talk about the system I’ve been using, which is the most common question that people have for me. In particular, I’ll introduce the hardware, circulation and filtration of the system. Here comes a checklist of my minimalist approach to reef keeping. Everything should be made as simple as possible, bu...

Goniopora (flowerpot corals) impossible? | Care recipes
Просмотров 33 тыс.4 года назад
In this episode, I’ll talk about the amazing flowerpot corals and how to keep them in a captive environment. Everyone knows that Goniopora are impossible to keep. They always die after a year or so. That’s the word on the street - but it’s not the whole truth. Personally, I took this statement as a challenge, and set out to change the way we looked at the care of this “impossible” coral. Until ...
Husbandry of garden eels in a mixed reef setup
Просмотров 19 тыс.4 года назад
Today I want to talk about the husbandry of garden eels in a mixed reef environment. I have long wondered how these little creatures poop without dirtying their burrows. Please do watch till the end of the episode to see how, should you have the same question as I had.
Cuttlefish vs predatory crab
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.4 года назад
I have shown how to rear cuttlefish hatchlings in one of my earlier videos. These dwarf cuttlefish are almost three-month-old now and really showing signs of maturity. In this video, I'll show you cuttlefish predation on blue crab / shore crab / hermit crab. If you have no idea of how to capture a crab that has large claws stretching out wide, you shall definitely watch this video and cuttlefis...
Mixed reef species guide - lessons learned from trial and error
Просмотров 289 тыс.4 года назад
One of the most challenging topics in the mixed reef space is species selection as we always manage to strike a balance between biodiversity and compatibility. Today I'll show you my 70-gallon mixed reef tank, where most inhabitants have been living and thriving together in what I perceive to be relative harmony in the past 12 months. I'll be introducing corals, anemones, fish, crustaceans, tub...

You tank is beautiful. The colors are extraordinary. I never see these in nature. I have been diving and reef keeping for over 55 years. It always amazes me how tank corals are so brilliantly colored but in nature I only see occasional colors even a little as bright.

Did one of your dwarf bottle fish die ?

  • @shemusmcquillaide
    @shemusmcquillaide 4 месяца назад

The advice to not put fish of the same species in a tank smaller than 200 gallons or they will fight till one dies sounds a bit paranoid to me. I notice you have a couple of chromies yourself and you only have 70 gallons, not 200. I'm certain I have seen a lot of nano tanks with several clownfish, that would be a very negative reflection on the marine hobby as being one that promotes cruelty to animals if its rtrue that actually one of those clownfish usually ends up killing the other one. Do people put two clownfish together as a kind of bloodsport to see which clownfish will succeed in picking the other one apart? It is certainly not true in freshwater fish keeping, there are only a few species that must be kept as solitary, such as bettas, who will quickly try to kill each other. But, I would not know, I don't have a marine tank, perhaps you are correct, very surprising if so.

Basically the small fish can be kept in numbers with the species , but the larger fish of the same species are always problematic unless they are in a very big tank.

Cephalopods don't live long in the wild either. They hatch mature into adults, reproduce and die, Varies from species to species but life span anywhere between 2-5 years
