Why are you concerned with the mans skin colour if the game trailers have shown almost no non-asian people else? Most people concerned with the man being black wouldn't care if he was the most nordic man imaginable, so why care then if the man shown is a real historical figure regardless of his importance. Also the samurai can mostly be seen in a really thick armour samurai armour, when played in game you wouldn't notice Yasukes skin colour... The only thing coming close to cultural appropriation is the dogshit research that the Ubisoft team put into how natural Japanese society and city looked, that's the only point I saw real Japanese people complain about.

@@karlilinux The fact that he's black isn't the problem. They're stealing the achievements of other warlords in order to make Yasuke famous, even though he had no historical achievements. Ubisoft's production is altering history and making fun of Japan. If he were a fictional character it wouldn't be a problem, but Yasuke was a real person. Or, if Yasuke's story was fictional, like the anime "YASUKE," it wouldn't be a problem. Ubisoft has recently started to emphasize that it is fiction, but they have not retracted their past statements that they are faithful to the facts. What's more, they are continuing to do business while stealing Japanese copyrights. This is a criminal act.

Years and Years of Games and Media caused this picture that He is this Warrior/Samurai, back in those days. As these media headed towards the West, a lot of ppl simply just picked up the Story and ran with it. (Not only the West in Asia and Japan itself, those who ain;t really in touch with Japanese History thought he was a Samurai too) So now we are here. Fuck the DEI nonsense, Fuck the screams of Racism. And look at the problem. 1)Theres no Documentation of him being a Samurai, if he is one don;t you think the Japanese wouldn't document it somewhere. 2)Very little Records of him in Japanese history 3)Ppl actually believes HE WAS A SAMURAI, and scream racism when ppl pointed out he ain't because, THEY TRULY BELIEVE HE WAS ONE, due to popular media, from Japan itself. Who is to blame? The Japanese themselves who always took bathtubs full of Creative liberty with their own History and probably also that white guy that took a few sentenses about Yasuke and wrote a "History book" of 400+ pages. This incident actually helped in a way to get ppl to read up and understand parts of Japanese History, well, - off those whom are not interested in History but just wanna argue over the internet. a famous arguement their also using against this game which is again only focused on yasuke, "well all other AC games see you play as people who are native to the region, such as altair whos arab, Ezio whos italian in italy and rome, Arno whos french in france, connor whos mohawk in america. ect why are they only doing it now to shadows?" thing is they all conveniantly leave out AC Revelations, AC4 Black Flag and Rogue, which have a Italan Man in Turkey, a Welshman in The Carribean sea, and a Irishman in the Americas respectively, when by their logic they should be turks, cuban and haitian, and native american respectively. but of course when you bring those games up to disprove their narrative suddenly the goalpost is moved to "uhhh well you see its because ezio had good reason to go to turkey, and there were englishmen like welsh and irish in the carribean and americas at the time" which not only defeats their original arguement, but excuses yasuke's presense in Shadows as he was a real black man in japan at the time. just bringing that point up and watching them twist into pretzels to justify their arguements, really goes to show how vapid their views are, and showcases why this is actually a controversy to begin with, has nothing to do with representation or DEI/wokeness or even historical accuracy, its 100% racism.

If you don’t care that he’s black why is it suddenly a racial agenda, what about sekiro or ghost of Tsushima, yakuza, final fantasy. There is no shortage of games with Japanese people set in Japan, and Ubisoft has a history of making AC games inclusive. This isn’t about who they passed up that’s made obvious by your point about Yasuke’s prowess. We have enough historical records to know that yasuke was a Genkin under the employ of Diamyo Nobunaga. We know that he did battle for Nobunaga we know that the clan Nobunaga led was particularly formidable. In fact it was only through a concerted effort by other Diamyo that led to his deposition.

@alexandergreen7230 Because that's literally the only reason that they picked him to be the main character given that he wasn't even a samurai, nor was he a fighter. At first I was fine with it, thinking he was a real African samurai, but after announcing that they were making him gay, it's pretty clear that they didn't add him because of his character irl, they just wanted an excuse to insert a black MC into a Japanese game. The reason this is disingenuous and bad story telling is because throughout Japanese history, they have prided themselves on being a nation with a pure culture, always remaining true to themselves and their traditions, and would never have allowed an outsider into their ranks as a samurai. The fact is that Assassin' Creed's whole theme is that it is losely based on real characters and events. Therefore, it needs to have *relative* historical accuracy in order to respect the culture and it's history. That said, would it really have been so terrible to add a unique character who was actually Japanese? Musashi was literally RIGHT THERE.

Yasuke was a Genkin his title was given to him by a respected clan leader or feudal lord. Your refusal to interact with this documented fact doesn’t make it go away. Lastly I say again AC games have long been examples of diversity in gaming, albeit in one of the most tame examples of diversity, but diversity nonetheless. So we have a game franchise that has always used subversive perspectives within their storytelling, a historical figure who actually existed with the title he’s depicted with in game. But you’re mad because his skins a little dark? Look we can argue night and day over semantics but this genuine nonissue gaining so much traction is an example of outrage at a certain type of inclusivity. Whether you think it’s gay people or black people that are the problem, their representations shouldn’t leave you frothing.

@alexandergreen7230 Tbh, I read the same thing and figured that makes him a perfect AC protagonist, but then there are people who claim none of that happened and that he was a slave who aided other samurai in battle which would have also made sense. If Yasuke actually was a genuine samurai, then I'm fine with it, I just dislike the way they took a historical figure and felt the need to tack something on by making him gay for no better reason than they wanted to be more progressive.

@@j-dawg4774 right but they’ve done things like that before I don’t think it’s necessarily nefarious reasoning behind it. Remember when you play as Ivor in Valhalla? Ivor was a real historical figure, but he wasn’t at every major event that shaped the Viking Saxon wars. They’re telling a story if the MC needs to fight Anubis or travel to Valhalla in order to progress the plot he’s gonna.

I don’t argue with you that they chose Yasuke for the diversity, I’d just make the point that it’s ubisofts whole shtick. We didn’t have a cow when we got to play as a Native American, or a rejected spartan raised as a Venetian. Assassins creed often places outsiders in foreign lands ignorant to the ways and customs of the people, but hellbent on revenge. I’ll also make the statement that samurai typically didn’t do stealth, as the act of assassination or trickery was seen as dishonorable. I’m pretty sure Ubisoft considered that seeing they have a smaller nimbler character that’s being advertised as a sort of co-mc.

@@alexandergreen7230 I understand it, my issue is not really the game, which can take the direction it wants as long as it doesn´t want to say it is exactly the same as reality and as long as the gameplay logic of the world makes sense. My problem is with history revisionism done only to pander to minorities or even worse collectives that represent them. And that happens all the time, Yasuke existed but since he is black and it makes for a good story reality is bent over backwards to make everyone believe he was a samurai and did x, y and z when there is no real evidence, in fact evidence doesn´t point that way. And it happens all the time, I really don´t care about fictional characters, they can be whatever race but when things are trying to be about history it pisses me off, it´s time to stop rewriting history, if you want to make a historically accurate story about a black person there are many great stories.

Enough with the manufactured indignation, none of their other games have been exact one to one to the actual history, they are all meant to be fictional works. I guarantee that you didn’t care this much about historical accuracy when Valhalla, unity, or origins came out. Apparently, his combat prowess and honor streak isn't that good either, and why would it be? He started out as a slave who at the time, was probably not treated the greatest, so he allegedly retreated in the face of battle rather than fight for the country that enslaved him.

So let me get this straight, regardless of the fact that it’s a fictional story. Regardless of the fact that there are already games set In feudal Japan with Japanese protagonists. Seeing a black character in a game set in the same setting is simply untenable?

@alexandergreen7230 It's the fact that they chose him specifically because he's a black character, not because he was a good historical figure, or that his combat prowess was impressive (wasn't even a samurai). They literally just took Yasuke's name and made it their own character instead of making an original character, preferably one who's actually Japanese, as the Japs prided themselves on having a pure culture, so a black samurai wouldn't make much sense.

It’s a mischaracterization of what dei is, DEI does not mean that I can go on the street and grab a random black or brown person. Then put them in a position of authority simply to meet a quota, it’s a childish and unrealistic notion when you consider it for any length of time. We live in a country with a racial majority, meaning there will be an over representation of that demographic in the work force. All DEI does is find SIMILARLY qualified candidates from other demographics that wouldn’t be picked on a purely statistical basis.

That character too was given a high position. Anyways yosuke is a samurai as a status so nobunaga could interact with him. Being a sword bear is a great honor for sure, but he sure was not swinging it at an enemy. He kept it clean and carried it.

You didn’t watch my video. I literally talked about a creator who went to Japan and a lot of people didn’t even know about Yasuke or have a problem with Yasuke. Also, my issue was not with Japanese peoples opinion about the game. Their opinion is valid. What is not OK is these people who literally cosplay as Japanese professors making up fake petitions, and articles to try and create fake outrage and make it seem like all of Japan is actually upset at this game when really it’s not the case.

I agree with all your political ideologies, but what I will say, is that you are taking one extreme, which is right wing hateful oxygen thieves, and assuming these people are the only people in the world that have issues with it. But there are plenty of Japanese people who aren’t impressed with how Japanese culture is represented in this game, beyond the protagonist. And I think it’s important that their thoughts on it are elevated. One RUclips video isn’t a good representation of their thoughts. If I walked up to random people in a western country asking them about AC, 99% of people wouldn’t know what I’m talking about either. I know a lot of crap people are jumping on this for the wrong reasons or to get engagement, but there are plenty of gamers in Japan who are disappointed with this games depiction of their culture.

I'm saying you can make any of the white or Asian characters black in the customisation menu but can't make the one default black character white. Is me wanting that racist? I don't think it is but maybe an outside perspective can confirm or deny it. Also there's a video from a well respected creator called metatron on RUclips who'd I'd consider a professional on history. He has a video on yasuke and analysing whether he was or wasn't a samurai. His conclusion is although there's no official yes or no, it's his opinion that yasuke wasn't a samurai as there's more evidence to suggest it. So I can see why some people wouldn't like this concept but for me ac historical accuracy has never been a big issue.

.... are you serious? Yosuke was a real black man who served under nobunaga, was given land and allowed to carry a sword. Not just his own sword, but nobunaga's as well which was an honor given to those in high esteem. So on one hand, we have a dude that served under a lord, was given fairly high esteem, allowed to be armed, and took part in at least 1 military operation. Enough so that other Japanese media has depicted him as a samurai for decades. On the other hand, the story of AC is literally about using what is effectively a time machine in the struggle between two world wide secret societies over artifacts left behind by ancient aliens that give people access to what is basically magic. And you think the black samurai is unbelievable? Please elaborate

Her father is the real legendary historical figure Fujibayashi Nagato right .~~~WELL he is actual known to have NOT FATHERED a DAUGHTER, BUT a SON named Yasumasa. So Ubisoft pretty much erase and remove the actual historical figure son and made him a lady and fictional character. And justify the choice of Yasuke because he is a historical figure. Ya gotta chill out, majority of games take liberties with the time period they are in, Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t supposed to Katana’s at all because Katana’s weren’t even made during that period, ya want one to one accuracy, but if ya got it ya would hate it, nah I some one agree with the Yasuke being a pawn thing, but I want to see the game play and story before I make any judgements.

@@progamer_otaku6542 Ghost of Tsushima never claimed to be a historical fantasy, though, it was always a Kurosawa movie in video game format, and it absolutely nailed that Kurosawa cinema vibe. Assassins Creed was never historically accurate either, but it was historically authentic and believable. Within the framework of the setting, it worked. The designers of the first 2 games really took "historical authenticity" seriously, they made sure that whenever they broke away from actual history it was done so deliberately and for very specific reasons, not just for DEI points. I can highly recommend watching the 'Overly Sarcastic Productions' videos on the subject matter, it's fascinating to see how much restraint and respect AC1 and AC2 showed for their respective time periods. Sadly, as the series progressed, they showed less and less restraint and the series became more and more anachronistic fantasy. Especially Assassins Creed Valhalla was a massive slap in the face to anyone who's an actual fan of the real Viking history.
