this popped into my recommended feed right as i was about to wash dishes and i thought “eh, why not.” i truly wasn’t expecting such a thoughtful conversation! i love punpun, but a lot of time coverage of it only reaches the depths of “it’s super depressing” or pointing to the most grody events and saying “woah!”this went way more interesting places in terms of discussion- for example, when the two of you had a respectful disagreement about if the manga was sometimes excessive in its trauma p*rn. overall, i really enjoyed hearing your thoughts! keep it up:)

I'm so happy I found this, I just recently watched the anime for the first time, and I was like "WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME HOW GOOD THIS WAS???" I swear, no one talks about it. I really want to read the manga, but English manga aren't sold in Thailand... But I will get it as soon as I can!

Thank you guys for the exciting discussion. Feels amazing to have HxH rhetoric pop-out more as Togashi's feeling better and drawing again. I agree with the discourse on Nen. What's fascinating is not only each fight is unpredictable because of Nen matchups, but one fight can have different results depending on how much knowledge you have of your opponent's personality (Gon vs Bomber) and the setting (Gon vs Hisoka HA arc). Hec, we even see how false assumption of personality can almost end you **SPOLERS FOR NEW READERS******************************(Knuckle's final punch attempt vs Youpi). It's a simple power system when you think about it but the way Togashi weaves Nen into the world and hearts of its inhabitants makes it much more complex in a logical way. Thus, the greatest power system.

Yeah the oneshot seemed more promising. This is still an alright series, but it leans too heavily on predictable tropes played fairly straight. Definitely less fanservice than a lot of other WSJ romcom series, but it should be capable of doing a lot more. I think it's pretty clear that Hina is going to get with Shuji while Kyo will end up with Ayame. Hina and Kyo maybe had a few hints early on but now seem platonic.

love this review and understood the takes from both sides, also love dat kagurabachi shoutout at the end its really next up!

For me its a 7/10 could be bettwr but still goood.

10/10 & what do you mean “messy”? The art literally was at its peak during the final arc. Unless you mean the epilogue, which was a bit rough, but Hori was sick & tired. He made so many color pages, SJ covers & chapters with no rest. & Endeavor’s not a bastard at all. His whole family is to blame. The mother was incompetent at raising her kids, her parents supported inbreeding to keep the bloodline pure & we saw that with the Paranormal liberation ice dude who’s related to her. The eldest brother is just annoying to me. If you cannot find it within yourself to forgive someone who tries so hard, then you’re even worse of a person than them for how black & white your perspective is on people. Not to mention people would be more forgiving of him if he was a hot woman because sjws & feminists are closeted sexists who think women should get more leeway in society than men.

do not like this series at all, a lot of really annoying rather than funny character gags and the magic aspect of this series feels really stupid. Loved Assassination Classroom, but this series is a major step down from that in almost all aspects imo.

Right. They've been doing a good job with Sengoku Youko so far and I'm very much looking forward to the later parts of the story. This means out of Mizukami's top 3 works, one apaptation was horrendous and one is solid. And if SY does well enough, maybe there's hope for a Spirit Circle anime too? Also I contributed to the Mononoke Kickstarter, so high hopes for that one. What's been shown off in the updates certainly looked up to snuff.

I'm looking forward to the anime adaptation of the sci-fi romance comedy My Wife Has No Emotion but that's mainly because I've been reading the manga for the past four years or so. I'm surprised that My Wife Has No Emotion got animated before Jirou Sugiura's other big manga, The Fake Alchemist (Nisemono no Renkinjutsushi), considering that The Fake Alchemist is an isekai and would seemingly be an easier sell in today's anime environment.

Very interesting predictions! One series that I think has the potential to become pretty big is "You and I are Polar Opposites". I decided to check it out after seeing it place highly in the Taisho awards, and was quite surprised at how authentic some of those characters felt (Taira and Gapacho are especially great). I could see it following a similar trajectory to Bokuyaba - underwhelming first impressions, slowly rising up the rankings as time goes on until it blows up in popularity. for me at least it is second only to Bokuyaba as far as romance goes

Excellent podcast. I can tell you both like Hirayasumi and I'm glad you mentioned he had the idea while being treated in the hospital for cancer. I'm currently collecting the japanese volume and I've read up to volume 4. It's a great SoL story with endearing characters. I also like manga by Takako Shimura but I haven't read much of her yet except Wandering Son, Awajima Hyakkei and Even though we're adults.

i hope this show get past the Succession war arc even if its not yet finished, and Review the upcoming batch of chapters that is coming! Great show guys more power.

Samu mentions in his recommendation that Kowloon Generic Romance has an anime on the way -- this is great news to me, but I can't find an anime announcement anywhere! I definitely agree that it's got a similar vibe to YKK... the tagline for KGR is "Gentle Dystopia," and obviously that would apply perfectly to YKK. Come to think of it, KGR probably shares some DNA with Heavenly Delusion, too (they have a bit of body horror in common, and a lot of interest in day-to-day life after the world ends).

Way back when I was the SF book buyer for a small chain, I recommended YKK to Dallas Middaugh when Del Rey Manga first started. He knew and liked the title, but gave me the usual non committal editor's response. They had the Kodansha relationship, so I guess they needed to go with bigger sellers.

02:30 It wasn't licenced in France until 2021 too. I remember talking to a french editor at a con in the mid 2000s and suggesting him to publish YKK, but he waved off by saying that it's too niche. I also showed a volume of YKK (and Discommunication) in the early 2000s to a german editor-in-chief of one of the bigger german publishers. He quickly looked at it and put the volume aside without saying a word. One of his colleagues picked it up, looked at it and said that the artwork is stunning, but the editor-in-chief immediately responded "yeah, but it wouldn't sell at all." So I think one of the main reasons as to why the manga wasn't licensed outside of Japan (minus Taiwan) all these years until 2021 is for commercial reasons, western manga markets not being ready yet for mature seinen series such as this one and plain ignorance/arrogance or prejudices by the publishers. It's also quite possible that Ashinano, his editor or Kodansha were opposed to a western publication, for unknown reasons.

Great first episode with a great manga rec. Looking forward to the next episodes! Also had to laugh at the note about Gaijins being interviewed. While studying in Japan, I experienced this during brexit where the news channel was hounding all the international students. Had several interactions where I had to clarify that the Republic of Ireland was separate to the United Kingdom (a huge point of contention for Irish people haha)
