Yes! I would recommend a water based paint.. acrylic, or even latex would work but latex takes longer to dry:)

Ok thanks! 😅 Um , I learned that I should have been more aggressive with sanding before varnishing. And that sanding sealer doesn’t give nearly the color that varnish does. I found this out the next day after I made this video, when I decided to get out my palm sander and sand the varnish off. That’s why the final shot shows a better quality product. I also was reminded that I’m not a carpenter, but an artist, and the organic, light effort (I like that) result is perfect for our funky little house!

In Wisconsin on my local marketplace.there are lots of carpenters with small mills cranking these out. I bought a bigger pine one for only ten! One of my next projects.

I used several brands of Universal tints that I have in my studio, but I recommend Mixol universal tints as you can get them in small quantities in many colors online. Add the tints (by the dropful, they are very saturated) to the concrete stain base. Play around with the colors until you are satisfied with have made a few shade that will work for you ! You won’t need much! Depending on the size of your fireplace you will only go through a fraction of the gallon . Maybe make a cup of each color . Good luck! ❤

@@snakes111b there are many types of lime based Venetian plasters available, some can be burnished and some cannot. For you know which type you bought?

@@snakes111b the grain or aggregate in different plaster are different sizes, and basically the grainier plasters aren’t able to be polished or burnished. Many of those are exterior rated. The more delicate plasters can be burnished or polished,and then sealed with “soap” or wax to protect the finish. I know, it’s confusing. Lime plaster is quite different than acrylic, and the rules aren’t the same at all. The best thing to do is buy from a distributors who can walk you through it. I recommend the Plaster Center in Minneapolis. (I know they are actually having a free two day seminar very soon! )
