    Some observations from someone who had watched a lot of their games since Green's rookie year: The mavs at one point had been using him to bring the ball down so he can definitely dribble. He can initiate the offense by penetrating but it's often by relying on his speed and athleticism, not on making reads like luka and kyrie do. If he can improve in this aspect it would be great for him because he can definitely pass, he had made so many great assists throughout his time in Dallas you would sometimes feel like he's as amazing to watch as luka. This guy is malleable I think he's been able to imitate some of luka's style of play. He excelled in running/athletics in his younger years, having been selected to represent his home state in 9 different sports when he was 10. No wonder he is super athletic and his favorite basketball move is to sprint in transitions. As every mavs fan knows everyone on the team had to defer to luka and kyrie so there's not a lot of shots to go around. He supplements his 3 point "rations" (3.3 attempts/game, which he converts at a high rate) by literally scavenging for his own shot opportunites, mainly with steals, offensive rebounds and scoring on fastbreaks. There was a point before the Mavs' new acquisitions when he led the league in 3point percentage and if I remember correctly he was routinely scoring 12 or so points a game. But that was before Kyrie came to Dallas. During the 2022-23 season he was on a good trajectory, was a confident starter converting 53.7% of his field goals and 40.2% on threes. This guy is good just give him a better role.

    Great analysis, I absolutely love this pick up, he fits like a glove and it really speaks to how aligned the FO is with the coaching staff. Also I couldn’t help but notice how similar josh’s style of play is to Salaun, both are physical high motor transition players that can shoot with tremendous perimeter defense upside. This is how you create an identity as a team.

    Green is stationary at the 3 because that’s how the Mavs offense is designed lol…Probably because of how iso heavy they are but Guys are supposed to just stand in the corner. That’s literally been every role player, wing in the Luka era.

      @BUZZBEATPOD Месяц назад

    • @che498
      @che498 Месяц назад

      @@BUZZBEATPOD I’m adding context, not arguing lol. My point is that Josh had a limited offensive role on the team because that’s how the offense is set up, doesn’t mean he isn’t capable of more. In games where he had a more expanded role, he was fairly efficient, even at a higher volume. Had a 2 month period where he averaged double digits on about 8 FGAs; same last season, where he put the team on his back a few games in Luka’s absence. (And I believe there are a few highlights of him shooting off screens). The issue though is that he didn’t really get that opportunity unless one of the stars was out and there were injuries. (Was in the top percentile of the league at the rim last season, in the restricted area, think he had a straight month or so where he was shooting 70%.) His job on the team, and really that of most of our wings the past several years, is to play defense, stand in a corner, and shoot the occasional 3 when called upon. It’s a catch and shoot type, low volume role. DFS, KP, etc. have all spoken about it in the past, and I think Josh even said in a recent interview, it’s hard to have a big offensive role in Dallas because, as fans know, it is iso heavy. It can be hard to get into a rhythm because in many instances, you’re going long stretches without even touching the ball. I hope that he gets a chance to have a more expanded role offensively, is used more on that end, and has the chance to further develop his game.

      @@che498 Man I agree. There are some players, depending on their stye of play, who would thrive playing alongside luka (like dinwiddie, djj, gafford) and others who would thrive if they play in a different team (brunson, kristaps). I was sad at first that josh got traded but I just think now it's an opportunity for him to grow. Maybe I have to watch hornets games next season now that he's there. Hornets fans have no idea how exciting he is to watch he's done some extraordinary plays and Mavs commentators even call him Mr. Electricity

    • @che498
      @che498 Месяц назад

      @@crisdeugzman3711 They added in a wrinkle by incorporating the bigs post trade deadline and perhaps Klay will add some additional components as well. However, the reality is that in the Luka era the offense has been iso heavy, with simple concepts. Drive and penetrate with the wings and everyone else standing alongside the perimeter. That’s just the nature of having such a ball dominant player who also happens to be a generational talent. But due to that, it can make it very difficult to carve out a role offensively because for long stretches, you can literally just be standing in the corner, without being passed the ball. Hell, they even had Kristaps just standing in a corner when Carlisle was still here. But Josh has shown a propensity to be more versatile than that. Hopefully, this is an opportunity for him to develop his game further.

      @@che498my guess is he'll average 15 points a game in Charlotte if he becomes a starter again and gets out of the scavenger role. Time will tell

    Hornets have never picked an international guy in the top 10 to my knowledge. We usually pick an upperclassman college guy who has instant effect on the team, but no major upside. Morrison, Kaminsky, Zeller... Im so glad we didnt pick Dalton. We had to switch it up. Salaun is a great pick. We have a developmental staff. Lee has coached Giannis and Tatum. He knows what it takes. For this draft... hes the youngest, has a great wingspan, Best motor, willing to learn, hard worker, Better shooter than Castle, Clingan, Matas, Holland, Sarr, etc... It is a reach... we reaching for the stars. not the play in. I LOVE THIS PICK.

    Brian of course i'i's dangerous to take today's data and predict something one, five or ten years out. Many NBA player evaluators are gelling around the importance of "positional size" and the "ability to switch" on defense. These are two hurdles that Scoot can deal with but never fully over come. His size is his size. Age and team can and will change.

  • @mattwood6892

    I would ask Brian to free his tourtured soul. By simply saying "Scoot has been bad, so far" . The Portland team is different than Charlotte? Who are trying to kid, both are bad. Just qualify with "so far" and move on. Also you can say" I was wrong about Miller. He is much better than I thought he would be, so far." Your pride in ownership of player evals is just silly. It's a guess sometimes you miss. Let it go.
