The History Digging Kangaroo
Добавлен 13 мар 2021
Always had a keen interest in “old stuff” even as kids we would spend hours digging through old rubbish dumps…
Got my first good detector in 2020 the equinox 800 and absolutely love it.
Have Found some amazing things and thought I’d share them here with you , it’s great to find stuff but it’s also great to share the history
Hope you enjoy coming metal detecting and exploring with me, I’m not really a gifted talker so please excuse my attempt at a commentary on these videos 🤣🤣🤣 hopefully I’ll improve

Must be the week for 1925 Threepence's. Found the exact same last week
😁😁😁 nice 👍🏼
I don't know what you have against using gloves because it's hard to see you using them here. We don't do detection without gloves. They're very useful, not just safety, but part of doing detection.
I guess it’s just a personal preference, I’ve never had any problems not using them I’m careful about glass, also it makes filming more awkward because you have to take them off to use the phone and they seem to hold more mud and make your detector much dirtier, in summer it’s too hot for gloves here😅
Gday William. Good going on the goldies. Congrats on the rings and nice hole filling. No one would know you were there. Well done mate 😁👍
Hi Andrew, yes certainly did better on the gold coins than I expected to do, the worst thing about the cooch grass lawn is once you ruffle it’s hair it’s sometimes hard to get it to sit down neatly again 😆😆
A couple of nice silver rings and a great haul of gold coins. You can't complain about that.Well done.Cheers.
Thankyou, No can’t complain at all, got more $ than I expected and the rings were a nice surprise 😁👍🏼
Cool editing.. beauyiful country.. great finds.. and perfect detector!!! Cheers from your south European collegues😊
@@HeavyMetalDetectingPassion hey there, Thank-you im glad you enjoyed the video 😁👍🏼
Great video. It just goes to show that you don't have to have a 6000 to find gold or silver. Cheers John
@@johnhunter1262 Thankyou, yes the Nox certainly finds the silver easily enough, gold is just a bit more annoying because you have to dig so much rubbish in the lower numbers 😅 thanks for watching! 👍🏼
Lucky with two silver rings there, William, and two dollarbucks popping out of picnicker pockets at the tables, among bottle tops of course. Nifty shot of the wedgetailed eagle, nice! Be well, and good luck next out swinging the detector, cheers.
@@gabivalla6279 yes it’s amazing sometimes how many coins drop out of people’s pockets. sadly though not many people use cold hard money nowadays anymore 😅
Do you ever get hassled for detecting these kinds of areas? I'd like to have a go but worried people will make a big deal of it. Do you need permission?
No I’ve never had a problem, of course I wouldn’t dig out in the middle of a tennis court or football oval, I’ve had the shire come and talk to me before but they were only interested/ amazed at what I was finding 😅 Mostly it’s just people asking what you are finding, or telling you you won’t find much except rubbish around here, or asking if you’ve found enough to buy a Ferrari yet 😂 I am very careful on lawns to make sure it’s left as neat as possible, if people see you are leaving everything neat they are not likely to complain, quite often I’ll try to do lawns after rain or in the cooler months that way the grass plugs you have dug recover and don’t look bad in a few days time, you don’t need permission for public areas (recreation grounds etc ) I do prefer detecting in the bush more because it’s peaceful but I’ve never had any problems with people detecting in the parks, once you get out there and start detecting you will feel more comfortable :) Also I usually always wear headphones for a few reasons, one that the beeping attracts less attention and I don’t want to irritate anyone with my constant beeping..two that often it’s noisy with traffic/ people etc,
@Digging_Kangaroo wow thank you for that reply. I feel a bit more confident about it now. That narrow shovel looks great too. I've done beaches but no parks or reserves yet. I still do feel a bit self-conscious being the 'metal detector guy' character in public haha.
@ no worries , haha yes don’t worry I sometimes feel like that guy too 😅 but usually once you make the plunge and get out there it’s not too bad especially if you can pick a day that has less people around :) happy detecting 👍🏼
Great video! Those rings were really nice, especially that second one. I don't think I've ever uncovered one quite like that! I'm planning an east coast tour next year, so if you'd like to catch up, shoot me an email (check my about page). Cheers!
G’day, yes it was a nice little ring, east coast tour sounds nice 😅 I don’t seem to get to the coast very often👍🏼
Good hunt William. That snake buckle is a ripper and I’ve not seen anything like it before. Well done mate 😁👍👍
Hey Andrew, I’m glad to hear you also haven’t seen one like it before, I thought maybe it was just me and everyone else would say “ oh yes I’ve found a few like that” 😂 hope you are still having fun in uk and wish you safe travels home 👍🏼
Complimenti per i ritrovamenti nelle e monete ma soprattutto la fibia
Thankyou :) 👍🏼
Leave some room in the comment section for us @gabivalla6279 😂 joking mate. Some lovely finds amongst that lot. That snake buckle would have been real flash back in the day 👌
Some interesting bit and pieces from that horehound area.Snake buckle is a great find.If there is a time of year when the horehound dies off, perhaps winter, that would be the time to hit that area again.Cheers mate.
G’day Garry sorry I’m a bit slow replying to comments 😅 yes you might be right although the horehound maybe less green doesn’t really die back too much in winter from memory, leastwise it’s still sticky😅 anyway when I get some free time next I’ll have to do another trip out there and see what else I can find👍🏼
An enjoyable fossick for relics, William. I very much liked your showing the "history digging" that the actual kangaroos are doing! Had you taken this exact natural phenomena cue for the name of your show? We'd noted in England the badgers, hares and rabbits exposing middens of history, with coloured glass and tile fragments glinting in the sun, once, an early Victorian threepenny bit of silver, back in '97, he says, sounding like an old-timer with that datum! The kangaroos and wallabies, we'd looked at what they're digging up and eating:- underground fungus! Wattletree truffles, white and yellow, thought they're psychedelic to humans and the marsupials are unaffected, although one gave a scream of "the fear" when you bobbed up out of the horehound, how funny, but frightening at the same time, the whackers can be quite dangeroos, soz. We're also a buff (rather than a fan) of indigenous foods, and researched early descriptions of what explorer and early naturalists had identified, including those looking at indigenous aboriginal diets. Curiously, there's a type of milk cap mushroom only identified as late as 1996, no history of any indigenous peoples ever using this perfectly edible fungus, nor anyone else finding and eating them, until the scientific description was published in the late 90's! Lactaria eucalypti, I'll share this with you, maybe it's your area it was found, but I wouldn't try anything without a suitable expert leading an expedition for any. We trusted Polish folk for the pinetree related microrrhyzal original of the one I described, it's the saffron milk cap, and the description is in the Latin nomenclature, Lactaria deliciosa! Please pardon yet another blooming essay, but when facing thick undergrowth like the horehound, there's nothing for it but to wear heavy gumboots, avoiding cuts and abrasions, and snakebites, and we'd happily trample weeds like that for excellence in relics like your snake buckle. Happy hunting to you! Cheers from Gabi of Narre Warren.
G’day gabby sorry I’m a bit slow replying, I hadn’t really exactly considered the fact they might dig up history when I made up the channel name although I knew the Roos do scratch around and even twist plants out with their front paws 😂😅 yes it’s always good to check the dirt from a rabbit hole or wombat hole, hopefully one day a rabbit will burrow a gold nugget out for me 😂 haha yes I don’t really experiment with fungus too much the old field mushrooms are usually the only ones I’ll pick 👍🏼
Love the snake buckle, worth digging every bit of rubbish just for that one find.
Yes it was a beaut buckle, definitely worth the battle with horehound and rubbish, sorry I’m a bit slow replying, thanks for watching and the comment :) 👍🏼
Lovely snake buckle and some cool bits and bobs. Thanks for sharing
No worries and thankyou for watching and dropping a comment 👍🏼 hopefully I’ll get some free time soon to revisit the site and see what else is hiding :)
Very cool
Looks a fantastic place to detect. Best wishes from Lancashire, England.
You never know what could be at a new site until you give it a go.A few relics and a couple of coins from there,so you did well.Cheers mate.👍
Well done William. Bit tough going but you nailed some stuff. Congrats on the coins, thimbles and buttons. Good luck next time out 😁👍
A good exploration out and about, an interesting insight that paths and tracks about camped grounds then settlements may be on the same lines as once first used as today's, or very nearby. Of a couple of German settlements near us, one failed fairly fast, Hallam North, don't know what name it went by, the other very successful, and eventually a wealthy area carrying many old families' names, Zion Hill, later known as Harkaway, belfry 1869, bell rung every NYE, called "Concordia", recast 1935, and it's still there. Maybe as where you're looking the track names and localities were lost, levelled with machinery, or a long decay after a short burst of activity with scatters of signals yet to be reached by eye or machine detection. Excellent seeing you out on the searches, we ought do much more too, but for aiding the families, but those kids are themselves hooked now on treasures of all sorts, historical, environmental, natural and precious varieties, that's been our constant pleasure to inspire. Good luck exciting all these senses too!, and be safe and well. Gabi of Narre Warren.
Hi Gabi, yes it’s always a bit of an adventure exploring new ground, don’t know if it’s going to be a complete flop or yeild some treasures, I have been to other settlement sites and been lucky to find a brass razoo 😅 just no signals, yes there is a lot of lost settlements forgotten to history quite often on the roads between towns there is area names that once apon a time were little towns, but I guess with the railroad and the increased speed of travel on the roads they were no longer necessary. 👍🏼 Hope you are keeping well
Sometimes it's good to explore a bit to find new productive areas 😊
Yes it’s always exciting exploring a new spot :)
Great finds! Very enjoyable to watch.
Thankyou good to hear 😁 by the time i finish editing and listening to my own voice I wouldn’t know if it was interesting to watch or not haha 😅
@17:46 reminds me of an old skinning tool
@9:34 That looks like a men’s braces/suspenders fastener.
Yeah I thought about that later… you are most likely right
Sorry to hear about your dad’s condition. Lost my dad in 2021 to prostate cancer. Men please check yourselves and please don’t be afraid to go and get it checked out. The earlier you find it, the better your outcome. I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2020 and I am alive and well because I got it checked out and went through the treatment. Alive to tell the tale and to go on prospecting. 💜
Thankyou, everyone I know or meet has been touched in some way with cancer so I guess it at least has the effect of bringing families and communities together, I’m glad your doing well :) happy detecting!
Well done William. That area sure looks like it has some good potential and congrats with the finds. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Very good message you put out 😁👍👍
Hey Andrew, yes good area probably pretty well detected but then there’s still stuff there😁 looks like your having a ripper time in the Uk ( I did watch I just never seemed to get the time to comment :) 👍🏼 safe travels
That tube is a bullet that has been shot into an animal and expanded at the tip and then been through a bushfire and the lead has melted out
You are most likely right 😁👍🏼 thanks
Thanks for sharing, a nice detect in old surroundings, William, and gracious note for your dad, and for all facing struggles with cancer, our family included currently. All kindnesses are important, for them, and also for ourselves, in life to take care, and in the giving of care. It's especially us menfolk who should take our tests, and other good measures that we ought do too. I hope you are okay, William, that you have supporters in this with friends and family. Us gentle giants need these bits of TLC also. I find it powerful and empowering to promote and encourage such, strengthens families, friendships, communities and enterprises, too. It's a goodonya mate from us, still hope we'll see you out again soon, it's a healthy pursuit, even if that's a coincidental outcome of pursuing things with the magic wand. Regards, Gabi of Narre Warren.
Thanks Gabi, I always remember no matter how bad things seem to be that there is always someone doing it tougher than you and you should be grateful it’s only as bad as it is, Yes I’ll still be going out detecting, just been a bit slack editing and posting videos lately life can get busy, thanks for watching 👍🏼
A few relics from your wonderings in the goldfields. Sorry to hear about your father. One of my mates is having his prostrate removed this week from cancer.Something for us blokes to keep a check on. Cheers mate.👍
Hi thankyou, yes finds can be a bit far and few between out in the goldfields, but it’s always nice to find a few relics and it’s peaceful out in the scrub, 👍🏼
Sorry to hear this mate 😢
Thankyou, cancer is never a nice thing but I guess on the bright side it has the effect of bringing people/ family together
So sorry to hear about your father. Cancer is a nasty thing. Half of my family died from cancer but early diagnosis can save lives.
Thankyou, yes it’s not a nice thing, my dad only found out originally because he hadn’t been feeling to good and went in to get some blood pressure tests and they thought he might have had a small stroke, so they did more checks then they found the cancer, thanks for watching :)
Love your videos! May I ask what’s kind of shovel/spade you use?
Hello, thankyou I’m glad you enjoy the videos :) This shovel started off its life as a cyclone post hole shovel, I cut it down so it digs a smaller stealthy hole and adjusted the angle that the handle comes out so it’s more upright and put my own metal handle on 😄👍🏼
@@Digging_Kangaroo clever!!
That was a ripping half crown, well done
Thankyou yes it was a great find :) never know what your going to find next
those coins are absolute rippers! congrats!!
Thankyou :) yes it was a good day out
Great video mate well done. Just purchased a 15 inch coil for my Nox 800 going to the beach tomorrow to test it out.
Thankyou :) Ahh that’s exciting hopefully you find a few good things, I’ve only detected on the beach a couple of times due to the fact that the closest beach from me is about 4-5 hours drive 😁
Congratulations on your 1st snake buckle 🎉. Great place.✌️👍🦘🇦🇺🦘
Awesome hunt William some great items there mate and that kettle is a beauty
Thankyou , yes it’s a great little kettle, very efficient and boils pretty fast due to the design 😃👍🏼
Good outing there William. Big congrats on finding the two halves of the snake buckle. Good effort. You got a good collection of buttons too. Well done 😁👍
@@TheCoffeeBushKid thanks Andrew, yes it was a pleasant and successful day out I do Love when a bit of snakery comes out of the ground 😁 yes there always seems to be a few buttons to pop up I’ll have to stop saying “I don’t think I’ve seen that one before “ it’s getting to the stage where I couldn’t remember what I have and haven’t found 😂😂
My brother found the exact same snake / serpent buckle a few weeks ago, his is in slightly better condition but yeah a great find
That’s cool yes they were a popular design with many variations, did he find both loop bits as well? It’s a first for me to find all three parts in one location 😅👍🏼
@@Digging_Kangaroo Yep both loops intact and in good condition. He watches your channel, I told him tonight to check it out
Love your videos and your finds. Can you tell me which State you are in?
G’day glad you enjoy the videos , I hail from Victoria :)
Now that's a place to detect. Best wishes form Lancashire, England.
Yes I love peaceful spots the best, always good to get out in the bush 👍🏼
Was the settlement there a Eucalyptus oil concern. All the canvas tent studs and buttons seem to hint at a working group. Congrats on the snake buckle and the Victoria pennies.
Thankyou, yes it was a hardworking settlement, I’m not sure if they made eucalyptus oil there but they were harvesting lumber and making charcoal 👍🏼
Great snake buckle but the best find was the dog. Haha, what a cutie.
Haha yes she’s my shadow usually 😁 a couple of times I had to stop her from walking all over what I was trying to photograph 😂😂
Well done on the snake buckle, coins and other finds. Those old rivets are a real pain as they sound so good, and I see you ended up with lots.Cheers.
Thankyou, yes the washers do get a bit tiresome after a while especially if you hit a thick patch of them, especially when they put up a chase and you spend ages trying to find them in the dirt 😅😅👍🏼
Great snake buckle ensemble, fine details to it, as with the patinated pennies, you ought feel well-chuffed, William! Among your rubbish pile, though, were a thin, pressed, three-band belt tensioner, though you'd have a couple or several already. The chough, or whatever bird it were, mimicking a woodpecker, good observation! That billy stove is super nifty, flame through the middle efficiency, and the pleasing sound of a steam whistle. The poem would be different, "He sang, and he watched, and the billy didn't take all that long, youse a comin' Waltzing, Tilda, with us?!" Nah, all wrong, Henry! I'll put the kettle on. Happy diggings to you, stay safe, and cheers until next time. Gabi of Narre Warren.
G’day Gabi :) Yes to find a complete snake and both buckles i think i was more chuffed than puffing billy! I think the item you were looking at in the rubbish pile was a twin reed from a ? Concertina ?? I’m not exactly sure what they come from but that’s the rumour. one reed is up one way and the other is upside to it. Yes this is a great design kettle (invented by a Irish fisherman I believe) it boils very fast with the water jacket all the way around the chimney up the middle 👍🏼
Great hunt mate. I was riveting! Well done. Great Snake buckle.
Thankyou, yes some spots are very riveting, I’m starting to think I need to come up with a idea what I can use the rivet washers for 😅
Good finds well done 🙂
Thankyou 👍🏼
Fantastic snake buckle and beautiful day to be in the bush. Well done mate 👏
Thankyou yes it was a good relaxing day in the bush, how’s the detector going? :)

It’s possible 🤔 It seems to have a pretty good shine though idk if Bakelite can be shiny😅 guess it could
Some lovely finds, insane silver coin, great hunt
Thankyou :) yes I don’t think I’ll be finding another silver half crown again in a long time if ever again 😅 👍🏼
@@Digging_Kangaroo you never know, I found an 1899 half crown, then two weeks later found another one. Still looking for number 3 😄
