This channel focuses mainly on preservation and tourism railways, a niche within a niche, although you will see here the occasional dabble in modernism. Whilst acknowledging the economic rationalist argument for change, the decay and closure of branch lines and the scrapping of heritage locos and items could have been managed differently.
Short haul railways in other parts of the world have proven that low to medium volume, short distance freight can work. Most bulk operators have abandoned general freight as unprofitable, with many of the cross subsidies that once underpinned the rail network now supporting the privatised profits of rent-seeking Road Transport companies.
Still, it's an irrelevant argument in the door-to-door era. For the foreseeable era, the rail industry is unlikely to change from being more than an insignificant carrier of general freight.

Nostalgia for the unique standard gauge turning fork at Wallangarra, now lost forever with the closure of the line south from Stanthorpe. Filmed in standard definition with older equipment, so may look fuzzy compared to the the usual HD.

On October 31 and November 1 of 2023, fires ravaged the Southern Downs region, destroying homes and burning rail track and bridges in the section Ballandean to Wallangarra, After reviewing the damage, repairs were costed at $20m. In March 2024, the Government of the day announced closure of the entire section south of Stanthorpe, despite the track to Ballandean being completely untouched by the...

On 30 November 2013, SDSR ran a train from Warwick to Wallangarra. At Bald Mountain, just a few kilometres from the QLD/NSW border and the destination, a crank pin sheared and caused rod damage. The loco and train needed to be hauled back to Warwick, while passengers were returned to Warwick by coach. Repairs to 971 took over six months and more than a thousand hours of work. I never posted the...

Note: the train shown here departs Wallangarra station via a set of points to access a departure track. On 12 August 2023, notice the train left the station directly without crossing tracks.

I saw the remains of Wellington to Yeoval nsw line is still intact or what I could see of it. Don't understand how no one sees not to save theses old lines. Same with Coonabarabran to Barraba... great rail trails.
And NSW ripped theirs up the fools I went to a few dances at the Garra back in the 60s . Wonderful people
It was only on the turning triangle that they had dual gauge tracks.
real sad situation
Probably never see this again unless someone spends some serious Money on Infrastructure
No worries about bush fires that day!
I didn't know that there was dual gauge tracks at the border. I thought the standard gauge just met the narrow gauge at the station.
Good to see her out again
Good video, like!
I'm ever hopeful the line closure is temporary.....probably wont hold my breath
Sad that the full turning of the loco and Water Gin was not shown. Anyone can get video of a train running along mainlines and through stations, but very few videos these days show the turning of locos. The dual gauge Angle at Wallangarra is now lost forever as I believe the line is now closed from Stanthorpe to Wallangarra / Jennings.
Hi Alan, It’s very sad that the Wallangarra turning fork may never be used again. Footage of past activity can be viewed here: Bob Keogh memorial, from 16:35. ruclips.net/video/iQy6tvb6M_0/видео.html Downs Dash double header, from 16:25 ruclips.net/video/OEroPAZHfwc/видео.html I have previously rendered the scene you describe, will see if I can find that for you. Kind regards,
Thanks to the bushfire damage last year, our wonderful and ever thoughtful government has closed the line from Stanthorpe to Wallangarra. As there is nowhere to turn the engine in Stanthorpe, it will have to run backwards on the return to Warwick - probably won't happen....
Travelled overnight in the 1950s from Toowoomba via Wallangarra to my grandparents in Newcastle. Great memories.
You will never see these again
What the state governments are doing collectively is closing down transport infrastructure and killing off rural communities so that everyone will be herded into these 15 minute cities and controlled digitally
I'm pretty sure that this is not a tiltlander because the tiltlander train doesn't travel between Brisbane to walangarra the winlander travel between Brisbane to walangarra so this train is the winelander train not the tiltlander
Heavily warped track
Serous thunder!
Wallangarra white gums are beautiful trees and i have planted lots on my farm.
Are they a separate variety I never knew that I was raised in Tenterfield Loved it too cold for my wife.
There is currently a push to have the railway line from Armidale to Wallangarra re-opened.
Currently there is a push from the Glenn Innes area to have the railway line re-opened all the way back to Wallangara. Let's hope that it is successful.
I would love to see this but to do that you would need either a very rich philanthropist who likes trains or a NSW Minister for Transport who also likes trains. Do you have any idea how much it would cost to reopen the line? Also unless it was totally Heritage run, it would need to start from Armidale. Certainly a scenic run but those bridges that would require replacing don't come cheap and are usually not in the budget of an Historical Society of any sort. I fear that sadly in Australia we lack the population to allow many of these worthwhile dreams and projects to materialize. Just look at the Reunification of the Great Central Railway in England. It has two companies working together to bridge the gap and yet it is still a mammoth task that has taken years to even begin. They also have the population to support it once completed along with the closeness to the line. What does Armidale to Wallangarra have in its Favour? Limited population and for tourists a long journey to get to a starting point at either Wallangarra or Armidale. Please don't misunderstand me as I am a railfan and have been for most of my life. However, after 42 years working in rail and seeing the well intentioned plans of many to perform miracles, such as the Beaudesert to Bethania and the Dorrigo Railway to name just 2; I have come to understand the enormous challenges in our sunburnt country with relation to distance and population. Just look at our Airline industry; we still can't support 3 domestic airlines. I guess if the line from Regatta Point / Strahan to Queenstown in Tasmania can be done then it is possible. But remember they already have a tourist base at both places. And Puffing Billy in the Dandenong's is also successful and just a stroll from Upper Ferntree Gully Station on the Melbourne Rail Network. I also hope it is successful as I would love to ride a train from Warwick to Glen Innes or Armidale and return. When and where was this announced?
Gee that will be tough much of the line has been ripped up and the bridge on the road out of Tenterfield to Wallangarra cannot be used .
@@jacktattis Actually, most of the line is still there! I don't know about the bridge from Tenterfeild to Wallangarra, but the old wooden one heading from Glenn Innes definitely needs replacing!
@@chuckanoo1455 I know the railway line was ripped up at Bluff Rock and many of the properties along from Deepwater to Tenterfield took over the tracks .
! Great video. Like me !
Lines like this are doomed as is all rural branch lines lines throughout Australia The State governments do not what to spend money on their maintenance when road transport costs them nothing In the future only rail connections to major cities like Sybdney and Cairns will exist country lines will be scrapped
Was this the one the sdr got late 90's from chinchilla historical musem?.. Looks very similar to the one that was there , we used to climb all over them as children playing, my bro fell and broke leg, got photo of him in cast right leg on side of boilers.. Just wanted to know if they ever did get the one from chinchilla, also the one in the miles historical will they ever get that going again?.. Thanks for sharing.. Just like nsw did to the Dorrigo group that had fixed tracks and stock yet still told no.. many shut down due to high ins.
SDSR's C17 971 came from Chinchilla and is currently out of service, receiving repair. This locomotive used here was C17 974, leased from Qld Rail. The loco at Miles Historical Village is C17 944, stored in the open and viewable at the link below: www.tumblr.com/mileshistoricalvillage/search/944

What’s wrong with using heat resisting concrete rail sleepers ??
Everything COULD be done. In the era when everyone relied on rail it WOULD be done. But not enough people use the services. Farmers like the convenience of trucks that come to their farm to pick up. Passengers like the convenience of the car that goes when and where they want. They like to keep the OPTION of having the service but that isn't the same as paying for it. This is the reason why so many lines get closed. For example Dookie in Victoria was rebuilt to a high standard. It cost a lot less per tonne to ship grain on that but the farmers also wanted the flexibility to ship grain by truck to other destinations. The line is closed now and the money spent is wasted.
@@smitajky No sorry it had nothing to do with this, it may have played a small part. The reason to push to end the rail indsury was done all over the world from 1970'a onward. Trucks were starting to get to a capacity to make the trips wourth wile, the goverment pushed / end the rail because of people like lindsey brothers and the alike that are now big, big players in the indsurey. Now the gov makes a ton of $$$ , they can close the rail down and saving millions in doing so each year. This was also done in Qld/NSW had some brains & did not rip up all the tracks which will make the transiton back to rail easier.. Now that the big players are under control by gov they have free range to make billions $$, the revenue the gov makes from the transport ind billions in fuel taxs, rego ect. Thats why the railyways were shut down!.. Lobbying has to stop!..
@@smitajkyLook up Clara Australia. The fed gov wants to build a high speed rail from Brisbane to Sydeny, then to Canberra have 8 new smart cities/town linked up so can travel melb, bne, syd by rail fast.. They started in Bendigo, Qld already has some high speed capicity, the tracks & bridges need some work but shouldn't be too much to get going. They have a site with mud maps lay out so you can see how far theyre going. Im intrested in it. Seems the Railway will make a big comback soon, Fuel is to expensive, trucks idiling not earing $$.. Something has to give.
Bloody magic , no steam from the funnel .
@ 3:20 the point is set for straight movement, not cross movement 🤔🤔🤔
Spring loaded. Quite normal with manually set points.
Non interlocked points and are trailing so no need to set them, train will trail through them
@@algrigg9039 Sorry, NOT Spring loaded; Non Reversible Switch Lever with a Folding Arm, is the correct name for this switch lever. They are the ones with the long lever and at 90 degrees is a large round weight, which is designed to return the points to the normal position, whatever that may be. This particular one has a folding arm so it is clear of any potential loading that may be outside the loading gauge, either intentional or which may have moved during transit. They can be scary when you have to hold them to allow a 30 wagon Cattle train into a siding. Most Shunting yards I worked in had them. I shunted for 22 years and then trained shunters, drivers and guards for 9 years with QLD Rail. 😀
@@alanhaynes4576 Sounds like a spring to me! :)
So many of the old lines have been closed now and its a bloody shame. Our early heritage all moved by rail and now it still does but by more powerful loco's and longer consist's, wouldn't it be so nice to see and here the nostalgic scene's and sounds of times gone by and the smell of burnt coke floating in the air. As a boy I used to love nothing more than to stand on the footbridge over the main lines at Wangaratta and wallow in the smoke and steam of the majestic monsters of the rails used to belch out as they launched from a stand still with great plumes of mixed black coke and white steam. Now the yards are gone , the footbridge and road bridges are making way for double stack container trains, a couple of the old buildings are still there though, the station I believe is going to get a make over and a line relocation. I suppose that's progress.

What a fantastic looking train. Those classic Queenslander type carriages are to die for, With their beautiful steps up into the carriage. And the loco has 4 drivers. For that size is awesome. Credit to the camera operator and editor, For a beautifully well put together clip as well.
I'd be worried about the future of the run to Stanthorpe if they don't repair the bridges to Wallangarra. I've been on the train from Stanthorpe to Wallangarra a few times with friends and family, and we all enjoyed the train trip.
What disgrace that QLD government won't spend the money on the repairs for this line
Talk about a lack of vision regarding tourism....
Is this about when the tressle bridge was completely destroyed by last year's Fire
The QLD Government is not interested in preserving history. It does not fit in with the New World Order or Globalist scheme of things. Besides how can they keep getting all their lurks and perks if they set aside any money for a Heritage Railway? And before anyone criticizes me for calling out the current government. I don't believe the LNP are any better.
what a beautiful steam locomotive and old carriage set, all looks much older than as described in the Downs Explorer web site
I agree!
this line must be repaired

Oh they will once they crash the ic engine markets, same as they did in the 1920's to the ev market!. One man had a pattern for both ic eng and ev ford took them to court and won after appeals.. They're playing same script.. The line will be repaired only when they need it , not when public needs it.. remember they took the steam for the petrol now they're back to ev, whats next steam again?...

Great work! This is one of the most interesting parts of the Brisbane rail network IMHO.
Restore it and put it back on the line
Thanks Allsteamedup so much for posting this video. After many journeys on this train for north Queensland holidays, it was a sad, sad day to see the retirement of 'Sunlander' sleeping, lounge and dining car service and the introduction of the 21st Century train in the 'Spirit of Queensland'. For sure a much faster train than the Sunlander, but the Spirit of Queensland is a far less holiday and land cruise oriented train.
My first thought when I saw a railbed is that it reminded me of a mortuary and the entertainment is boring so I take my own
Warwick Community Performing Arts put on a good show with the Steam Railway. Young Peter Von Stieglitz was a great PM
Another Americanism - it should read 50th Anniversary!
I tavelled on the some of these carraiges a few weeks ago on the Q train. The Q train is restaurant train on the Belleraine Peninsular in Victoria. It was pulled by an ex South African locomotive. I travelled o nthe Sunlander twice in the late 70's and loved every minute but it was never a glamorous experience like shown on some of pictures on this video.
You would be wrong there. For many years the Queenslander section of the Sunlander at a premium fare, but good value at around $750.00 each way offered an onboard chef with cooked meals and dedicated silver service Lounge, Dining and sleeping cars with uniformed staff separate to the rest of the train. It was truly a luxurious journey. The remainder of the Sunlander also had its own dedicated Dining and Lounge cars as well, but not as luxurious as the Queensslander section of the train.
