Rag Dolly In The USSR, A Documentary
Ivy Austin created the role of a boneless rag dolly in a Joe Raposo/William Gibson musical directed by Patricia Birch. The production made history in the Soviet Union in 1986, marking the renewal of cultural relations between our countries. Ivy returned to the U.S. to find herself on the front pages of The Daily News and The Economist, and the subject of many news articles and talk shows. Later that year, "Raggedy Ann" opened in New York at The Nederlander Theatre, where Ivy Austin made her Broadway debut in the title role.

I imagine that if this musical happened after Chernobyl it must have touched a lot of people and children who have or had relatives that were sick and they couldn’t visit them.

How beautiful to sing Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land. This song should be our National Anthem. As an aside, this play is unpleasant and strife filled. Seeing it as an adult it knotted my stomach. Not for children. Cannot understand why Joe Raposo would have such a nightmare in his repetoire.

I'm a huge fan of Joe Raposo's music. He was taken way, way too soon. Finding this video is like finding a Holy Grail of Raposo memorabilia. You knew Joe was happy with something when he would say, "Hot Dog!"☺

I honestly prefer ivy Austin's voice for raggedy Ann than Didi con did in the animated movie. She brings so much life and innocence to the character.

Wow! The song "Blue" sounds great! Joe Aroeste sang his heart out! I have heard the demo version of it, but I would love to hear the fully orchestrated version. Thank you so much, Ivy for posting this. You are wonderful!

I was lucky enough to play one of the reed books for this show during the three years that it was performed in Albany. Unfortunately, only the rhythm section was invited to the USSR. What a tremendous experience!!!

So this is what the play looks like with visuals! I imagined the sets to be a little weirder, General D dressed more like a pirate, and what else have you. Like Didi Conn before you, you make a cute Raggedy Ann.

Thank you for sharing, Ivy....and for your support 30 years later of our Orphan Train at Grand Central. Alas I did the NYSTI (ESIPA) mega shows before (All-Time Good-Time Knickerbocker Follies) and after (Peter Pan) Rag Dolly so I could recognize most all of the people in the documentary as well as the venue. What a joy it was to bring Peter Pan to them just a few years later! Thanks again for posting.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing this, Ivy! I sincerely hope that someday the full play surfaces (I read in an old article that videos of the performances were retained in Moscow) because this show looks even wilder than I'd envisioned it while listening to the bootlegs!

Thank you for introducing me to the enchantment of this musical, and for your wonderful video! Can’t wait to see more! <3
