I was literally transported into another world in another era which fortunately i had been witness to. Vidushi Rita Ganguly ji used to visit my father Late Shri S M Banerjee ex Member Lok Sabha whom she revered as her elder brother. Without fail she would visit my father during Raksha Bandhan and tie Rakhi on my father's wrist and sing briefly a bandish. Since my father was well versed in Urdu, she discussed certain nuances of Urdu Poem (a Nazm or a Ghazal) with my father who added further. It was a splendid unforgettable moment for all of us. বাংলা সঙ্গীত জগতের প্রবাদপুরুষ ভীষ্মদেব চট্টোপাধ্যায়কে নিয়ে আলোচনার সময় এই বিচ্ছিরি উচ্চারণে এত ইংরেজী বলার কোনো প্রয়োজন আছে কি? বিশ্বাস করুন, এমন উচ্চারণের ইংরেজী কিন্তু ইংরেজদের বুঝতে কষ্ট হবে।

Have you confused this with how the taleem of Carnatic music is restricted by caste. Sounds as if we are in a kachheri in Madras. Tauba tauba. Bah re eto koshto kore aamra koto jon gaan shiklam, Ma learned sitar, my nephews learned sarod. Shudhu aaye na balam keno aaro koto Thumri shunte hoye. Ras ta bojhe na, rangto mein uplabdh karna chahiye, shé toh doorer kotha, golai khoob kaaj jehetu - they feel empowered to sing it. Jaader kotha bolchhi tara kintu bamon. Go figure!

এই শীতের কলকাতায় একসময় উচ্চাঙ্গ সঙ্গীতের আসর বসতো। সারা ভারতের বিশিষ্ট সঙ্গীতঞ্জদের সৌজন্যে আর কলকাতার শিল্পীরা তো ছিলেন.ই। অনুষ্ঠান হলের প্রবেশাধিকার না পেয়ে বহু উৎসাহী শ্রোতা সারা রাত সেই শীতের রাতে ফুটপাতে শুয়ে শুয়ে সেই সঙ্গীত উপভোগ করতো। সেই সব দিন রাত্রি কলকাতায় আর ফিরে আসবে না।সব শেষ হয়ে গেছে!

মনে হয় পুরনো কলকাতার সেই ঐতিহ্য উনবিংশ এবং বিংশ শতাব্দীর প্রথমার্ধ যেন হাত ধরাধরি করে একসাথে চলে আসে। সে গেছে এক দিন। এমন সঙ্গীত প্রতিভা আর ফিরে আসবে না!

Thanks lot for sharing the video. Yes, we the Bengalis be proud since we had a singer like Vismadeb Chattopadhyay. Instead, we are I'll fated since we failed to pay the proper respect he deserved. Same thing happened regarding Jnanendra Prasad Goswami. Moreover, he died early and his death is still a puzzle.

Masterpiece production on great maestro Viswadeb Chottopadhyay....I personally learned from Jaganmoy Mitra that he used to take musical lessons from Panditji...
