Weald of Kent Canal
Imagine if the Weald of Kent Canal had been completed. Perhaps after years of neglect, the canal would have been brought back to life and become an idyllic route across the historic Weald of Kent. Imagine slowly sailing from the River Medway to the Coast or walking along the towpath through the villages that line the route.
John Rennie, the renowned canal engineer said that 'without exception it is the finest piece of country to cut a canal through I ever saw'. It would have been a legacy to the art of canal building but sadly, it remained in the dreams of a few good men.

Virtual Walks 7 A Walk around Winchelsea
Просмотров 9104 года назад
This Walk around Winchelsea is an opportunity to imagine a life in a town whose Grand Design has little changed in over 700 years and captures a unique vision of King Edward I’s dream of a hilltop town. There are three medieval gates that guard the approaches, the old Court Hall that once acted as the gaol and the seat of the Mayor’s power, and a great church that promised so much, its grandeur...
Virtual Walks Walking the High Weald 4 Bateman's to Bodiam Castle

Bateman’s is the fourth cornerstone of this Walk around the High Weald. Bateman’s is Kipling, enticed by its warmth and seclusion, nestling below Burwash by the River Dudwell, and the start of the climb up to Brightling Needle, just one of Mad Jack Fuller’s Follies. There is a Pyramid in the churchyard and a Tower on the path to Darwell Reservoir. The Observatory can just be seen but Mad Jack w...
Virtual Walks Walking the High Weald 3: Scotney Castle to Bateman's
Просмотров 2154 года назад
Scotney Castle is the third of our castles. The secrecy and spies of Castle intrigue were but a diversion from the job of making money. By the 17th century, the iron furnaces between Lamberhurst and Burwash were being stoked for the production of cannon, grave slabs and the railings for St Paul’s, London. There is little evidence left of such industry on the way to Burwash and Batemans, along t...
Virtual Walks Walking the High Weald 2 Sissinghurst Castle to Scotney Castle
Просмотров 1054 года назад
Sissinghurst Castle is the second of our castles but this ‘castle’ is attributed to whim and whimsey as it never saw a battle or defend anything more than its ‘far from pleasant situation, low in a wet clayey soil, without prospect, and enveloped with large tracts of surrounding woodland.’ (Edward Hasted 1798). Today it is one of the most visited gardens in England. Cranbrook heralds the start ...
Virtual Walks Walking the High Weald Bodiam Castle to Sissinghurst Castle

Possibly the most beautiful castle in all of England, rising up from its moat, built to guard what was once the Appledore Estuary against a French Invasion. Follow the route along the flood plain of the River Rother and across the ancient Kent Ditch into meadow and pasture, mature trees and woods and isolated houses and farms that are the only habitation until Sandhurst. The wealth of Sandhurst...
Virtual Walks 5 Hastings East Hill and All Saints Street

Bracing East Hill announces the start of Hastings Country Park that stretches almost four miles along the Saxon Shore Way, all the way to Fairlight, Winchelsea and Rye. Today’s walk is a shorter walk, up and across East Hill, with its picture postcard views of Hastings and St Leonards and the coastline all the way around to Eastbourne and Beachy Head, and back along an almost medieval All Saint...

Hastings Castle still dominates the town, on West Hill, where, on a clear day you may be able see the coast of France. Closer are the old narrow streets and rooftops of Old Town, the fishing beach and views of the whole of Hastings and St Leonards. Timeless Old Town, a mixture of narrow streets, alleyways, steps this way and that, of Smuggler’s Caves and Foyles War, of back streets, cottages an...

Unique Alexandra Park, Hastings. Most visitors never venture further than the manicured lawns, the children’s playground and the park café. It is a fascinating walk for a pint. These Virtual Walks are taken from the History Walk...

Hastings Pub Walks The General Havelock
I lived in St Leonard’s, been gone for a year now and miss it terribly.
Irritating piano music
Interesting. I lived in one of the "Drying" cottages on Lavatoria (Norman Road) as a child but never knew the history. My best friend lived on Stanhope Place. I miss St Leonards & Hastings. So much charecter.
nice vid,,,,,, who did the music?
Hi Matthew, apologies, there should have been a music credit at the end of the film. Its from Creative Commons Free Music - Unheard Music Concepts Empty Lines and the link is freemusicarchive.org/music/Unheard_Music_Concepts/Harbour/UnheardMusicConcepts__01_Empty_Lines/
@@historywalks4732 gREAT MANY THANKS FOR THAT! Keep up the good work!
If I remember correctly (and I may not so happy to be corrected) my great Grandad made the boat pulpit in the church
Hi Lee, it's a real pity that the church is now closed. The boat pulpit is superb. David
Nice views of Hastings. The houses and pubs look interesting, though I'm not a beer drinker, it's coffee for me, so I would also like to have seen some coffee houses. I really want to visit Hastings, so thanks.
Beautiful winchelsea
Great to see the newspaper cuttings of the cobweb and the witch doctor! Some idiots say they are figments of my imagination, but there they are in black and white!!
Hi, noticed you started seeing double after the New Inn !
Thank you very enjoyable.
love the music. I write a blog about walking but yet to get into making videos. Really good.
Thanks Julie, if you can create a PowerPoint of photographs from your walks, you can create a video, adding music from Creative Commons. Any problems, let me know. David
@@historywalks4732 Yet no credit for the composer
Good to see pictures of Hastings
Nice pictures!
Very much enjoyed these photos which capture this lovely old town
Listening to the music and walking the trail via RUclips was enough to put me in a relaxing mood. Beautifully put together. Congratulations to David who, in his own right, has become an enthusiastic ambassador for St Leonards . IThere is something for everyone, locals and visitors alike, and I hope many take the time to walk the Trail.Carol from The Bookkeeper
