"Informational Silliness" to quote a friend.
I’m doing my best trying to learn to keep bees alive and make maple syrup, firewood, and get my house in the woods up and going. I also try to show ways to save money or make life simpler. I hope you find this channel useful.

Tapping and 3/16 Tubing for Maple Season
This year I’m expanding how many trees I tap using the 3/16 tubing method. It’s a little bit of a process on the front end but should make collecting sap easier

Great video
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
That system, and tool is a great idea! I hope it works for you. And I hope you found the hammer.
Thank you! I eventually found the hammer which was good because that tap started leaking after using the pliers to hammer it home. Using the right tool let me get it sealed up.
Neat system. Is the tubing reusable for the next season?
Thank you! I’ve seen that it can be reused as long as it’s cleaned out at the end of each season. I’m planning on that, as well as labeling which group of trees it was used on so I can have an easier time next season.
I can almost taste it now!
Thank you my friend! I’ll make sure you get ahold of some for this year 😎
@@scottthornandhisbeesandtreesI'll be ordering some from you brother... I love it
Thank you!
Beautiful! So maple syrup is tree blood?
Thanks! I don’t k is if that’s an accurate description though. Sap is how the tree gets nutrients and sugar from the roots, where it’s stored, to the branches, where it’s used. Thanks for watching!
Nice... Thinking about Sunday waffles...
Soon, my friend!
Show one with a big knot
I have a tree I just cut down recently and will look for a knot once I get it bucked up. Thanks for watching!
I bought the Neotec 892 clone. I've been running and working on saws since the 80's. It's A strong running saw but it has Had bugs just like this 372 clone. Don't buy a clone if You haven't been wrenching In saws for a while.
I’m no expert for sure but its been working for me. I haven’t picked up my Husky 350 since I bought this one even though I used the name brand one for over 20 years. Thanks for watching!
My wife loves it when I listen to Chainsaws on the Internet 😊
😂 good luck! I try to remember to reduce the volume while I’m editing these but sometimes I forget. Thanks for watching!
Do you know how I can get a replacement front table? Went to the craftsman parts list and it discontinued providing that whole table kit.
Aside from the way you mentioned, I do not. It might be that you could use some MDF or plywood over top of the current table to make a better surface. You’d lose some height but I could work.
@@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees ok thank you. Your video is priceless. If you could show me more that this will do like using the drill.
Thank you! Unfortunately I do not have that attachment for this tool. Once I get some things straightened out I’ll make more videos with it. Thanks for watching!
@@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees thanks much, have a great evening. Roy
I’m thinking you might have been more successful if you had used it a few minutes before the video. You said the saw can come over the work at you. Was that just a comment or your experience? I pulled too fast once. It started to climb and stalled. My experience is that it cannot do that. Hopefully, you did a better video later!
Yes, experience of the saw running out. Sorry this short, free video did not meet your expectations.
Thanks for your video it was very useful, i only have a question, what kind of blade were you using first? What is the name? or how can i looking for it?
The blade that I took off at the beginning is called a dado blade or dado stack. Search those terms and you should be able to find them. I bought this one used off of a friend of mine. Thanks for watching!
CHECK OUT BARN YARD BEE'S TWO FRAMES MATING NUCS. THEY MIGHT BE OF SOME INTEREST TO SOME PEOPLE AS WELL.
Thanks, I have built and used some of those. I like them but they aren’t my preferred method. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion.
So why do you think it died? Was there any signs of disease, insect infestation, or lightning damage?
Ok I commented too soon! 😊😊😊
There were some dark streaks on the inside of the trunk. I don’t know for certain if that’s fungus or an insect but either way I think that was a symptom of what killed it.
No worries! Thanks for watching
Good job. Did that tree sound up as you went towards the top? I am unfamiliar with hardwoods...
Thank you my friend! I was just thinking about that same thing today but haven’t gotten up the tree very far. I’ll update you when I do. Happy new year!
Close! VERY close.
Tasted great but yeah 😂😂
This video was critical. I haven’t done this project before. Thank you!
I’m glad you found it useful! Thanks for the feedback and for watching.
History daily is a very informative podcast!
Thanks! I’ll check it out.
Safety first!
Yep! We only get issued two eyes and two ears to last our whole lives. Thanks for watching!
I would imagine that all that cutting and splitting keeps you in excellent shape.
Not like it used to, but at least the winter bibs still fit 😂 at least for now
Classic!
Haha! Merry Christmas my friend
Hello, Could a 12 inch blade be put on the saw? Or it would have to be only a 10”?
I personally would not put the larger blade on it, but I believe the machine would be capable. Thanks for watching!
Yuup, I use my big Excalibur Dehydrator at 104*f works great and not overly heated. I can get almost 3 dozen 1lb jars in there, takes about 12 hours.
Thanks for the advice and for watching! I have ordered a small fan and plan on warming a five gallon bucket then. I’ll shoot for the 104 temp and see how it does.
Good video, thanks! I have found that an old deep freeze makes the best honey warmer. I recommend a small 500-watt maximum space heater that has a circulating fan for the heat source instead of incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs will not be available much longer as LEDs are more efficient. Obviously, LEDs cannot be used as a heat source because that is why they are more efficient. The space heater used must be low wattage to prevent melting the plastic insides of a deep freeze. A 1200-watt heater is way too hot. Set the heater to “full on - high” and use the same thermostat as would be used with light bulbs to turn it off and on. The circulating fan on the heater greatly reduces the “hot spot” problem.
Thanks for the advice. This warming lamp worked well but I agree it needs a circulation fan. I see some on Amazon for pretty cheap and plan on getting one soon. Thanks for watching!
I see you have termites....
😂 I think they were carpenter ants because the tree this came from was infested. They’re gone now thank goodness.
As usual, I learned something today. THATS why I’m a subscriber! Thanks
Thank you my friend!
Great project Scott! The sweet taste of success. 🐝
Yes sir! Thanks and I have a plan to install that computer fan to circulate air for better warming.
So did it work
It did, and still does but in a different application. This sugar shack got destroyed in 2020 when a tree fell on it but I salvaged the pipe for the woodstove in my barn. Thanks for watching!
Dadoing a 4x4, I would install a higher fence. Would make it a little stabler and safer. I have that same saw.
Can’t argue with that. It’s not a cut I commonly make but in the future if I do, I’ll modify with a taller fence. Thanks for watching!
@@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees👍 Maybe smaller passes too. If I try and take off more than 3/4" it wants to bite too much. I'll take multiple passes when dadoing or lapping.
Great job! I will make one, good instruction, thank you!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching! Best wishes to you on your build.
Thank God I don't have a need for double walled pipe, but I would try some rock wool in between the 6" and 8" pipes, and save myself a bit of work. Code sucks, hate those miserable mud suckers.
I think that’s a good idea, but when I built this I used only what I had on hand. Thanks for watching!
I use the 1x8x8 boards… with 4 boards you can make 5 medium boxes. Currently $11.52 plus tax per board…
Thanks for the updated pricing! I haven’t built any for a while now and didn’t know current pricing. Best wishes to you.
cool Im doing the same thing, but instead of the tabs, using a 1" ceramic fiber blanket between pipes, was only $11 on amazon
Interesting idea! Thanks for sharing and for watching.
Easy basic design .....the other guys make these hectic complicated unnecessary hives......when all they need is a basic box like u made
Thanks for the kind words and for watching! These have worked well for me for a long time. Happy building!
Hope you, and your bees have a mild winter! Thanks for the videos.
Thank you my friend! Fingers crossed they come out the other side alright.
Good luck! I hope your bees winter well...
Thank you my friend, and same to you!
Left a comment on another of your vids- you need to find a way to be able to pull out pre filters as you go so you don’t plug up and stop the flow. I could see it in this vid, how the syrup flow-through slowed dramatically after only about 20 seconds of filtration. The first pre filters is clogging up and needs to be pulled
Thanks! Replied to the other comment.
You should find a way to set your pre filters into the top pot so you can remove them one by one as they clog up
Agreed, I tried cutting the pre-filters into smaller diameters that fit inside the top. I found it worked, but ultimately made more sense to just run smaller batches. I’m on the edge of stepping up to a different system but think I can squeeze a few more seasons out of this tool. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, Scott. It is about to turn winter here and I still need to finish getting in my firewood. I have a Harbor freight splitter that splits in both directions, maybe I will make a short video about it...
I’ve seen those, and would definitely watch a video! I enjoyed the mine videos you’ve been making. Thank you my friend.
"Sharpen the saw" means to take time for yourself doing something that you enjoy... Just like you are doing. Thanks for the video.
You got it! Thanks my friend.
No warm up. Cylinder damage right off the rip
I don’t know, it is still running good. I just used it yesterday. 🤷♂️
How come my fruit is still at the top? Barely bubbling? Is it done?
Its been 8 days
No hydrometer here
I’d say if it’s barely bubbling you could rack in into a secondary fermenter. I don’t have a lot of experience with whole fruit wines but when I’ve done it, it was about 7-10 days in the primary fermenter.
@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees its bubbling barely. Day 7. Im up in ny. The fruit will drop when it's ready?
I googled your question and didn’t get a conclusive answer, sorry.
Never stick your hydrometer in your bucket in case the sod breaks then you now have glass in your wine. First time drawer here and I had the sod break inside the tube, have no idea how.
Interesting, thanks for sharing your experience. What is the sod?
As a 50 year owner and user of radial arm saws the #1 safety tip for all radial arm saws is the table must be no smaller than 24" out from the fence and 48" wide. Keeping your distance from the blade is the key. This table is to small. Change the table size and you will see. Get a 24" X 48" 3/4 ply and 3" high fence. Screw the new ply right on top of the table you have and change the fence.
I made this video so long ago I’m not certain which part you’re referring to. We assume some risk with all tools and how we interact with them can be the most effective way to mitigate risk. Thanks for watching!
No saws means no wood. No wood means no homes. I now own 10 DeWalt RAS for a new purpose. But you can't do this with a Craftsman. Elevating crank must be on top the arm. ruclips.net/video/Oq7fOd_O5yM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/k7cBLq1rgPo/видео.html
That’s a lot of saws.
I used escape traps for many years with great success. Then my neighbor let me use his leaf blower if I was in a hurry to get supers empty of worker bees. In the autumn, most of the drones will be gone. Just have a way to move filled supers to honey house, like a sturdy garden cart. Stand the super on end and blow to bees off. Another way would be to shake them off and brush the remaining bees off. Place combs in an empty box onto a cart until moveable well enough. Nice to have empty super boxes
I don’t mind the brush off method, though it can be hard work. Once the escape boards are done I’ve used a borrowed battery blower but didn’t really like doing that to the bees. It did work well but seemed harsh. Thanks for watching!
I got a good batch of 1 1/4 " dry pine boards one time, various widths with no finished straight edges. Not to worry. I had a way to straight one edge. After planing the thick boards to a healthy 1 1/8th, I took stock of what I could get with very little waste. I could make narrower boards by cutting out the worst knots and dowel joining them to others to make deep boxes. Don't remember how many deeps I made, but over 2 dozen. Then I took various scraps of 3/4" pine stock, put a frame dado on one edge to use as box ends. Took my thicker longer sides and put a dado on the ends to accept the 3/4" end pieces. I didn't have enough end pieces to make 24 boxes, so I stopped when I ran out. I glued and screwed the boxes together and treated them with a waterproof oil of some sort, like deck oil. Try not to get any on the inside, as bees don't like it. The cost was very minimal for what I got out of the gift of lumber. All it cost me mostly was my time, which was free. If you have a table saw, and some time, you too can make your own hive boxes
Free wood is my favorite! I also don’t factor my time as a fixed cost because I enjoy the process. Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching!
You really only need to spin it if it is inside a graduated cylinder so the hydrometer does not stick to the glass it isn't going to stick on that 5 gal bucket.
Interesting, thank you for the advice and for watching.
Does that book give you information on how to build the bottom board?
It does, both solid and screened versions. I’ve got some videos of how I build both styles. Thanks for watching!
Which wedge do you recommend
I like the basic straight wedges best. Once you get the hang of it, the simple ones work great. I don’t know what brand these are but they’re widely available most places. Thanks for watching and for the question!
My excitement matched yours great video !!
Thank you!
