"Informational Silliness" to quote a friend.
I’m doing my best trying to learn to keep bees alive and make maple syrup, firewood, and get my house in the woods up and going. I also try to show ways to save money or make life simpler. I hope you find this channel useful.

Does the Honey Warming Cabinet Work?
I built this cabinet several years ago but never really used it until now. Follow along to see how long it takes to turn crystallized honey back into liquid honey.

Splitting Into an Old Maple Taphole in a Log
Good video, thanks! I have found that an old deep freeze makes the best honey warmer. I recommend a small 500-watt maximum space heater that has a circulating fan for the heat source instead of incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs will not be available much longer as LEDs are more efficient. Obviously, LEDs cannot be used as a heat source because that is why they are more efficient. The space heater used must be low wattage to prevent melting the plastic insides of a deep freeze. A 1200-watt heater is way too hot. Set the heater to “full on - high” and use the same thermostat as would be used with light bulbs to turn it off and on. The circulating fan on the heater greatly reduces the “hot spot” problem.
Thanks for the advice. This warming lamp worked well but I agree it needs a circulation fan. I see some on Amazon for pretty cheap and plan on getting one soon. Thanks for watching!
I see you have termites....
😂 I think they were carpenter ants because the tree this came from was infested. They’re gone now thank goodness.
Great project Scott! The sweet taste of success. 🐝
Yes sir! Thanks and I have a plan to install that computer fan to circulate air for better warming.
So did it work
It did, and still does but in a different application. This sugar shack got destroyed in 2020 when a tree fell on it but I salvaged the pipe for the woodstove in my barn. Thanks for watching!
Dadoing a 4x4, I would install a higher fence. Would make it a little stabler and safer. I have that same saw.
Can’t argue with that. It’s not a cut I commonly make but in the future if I do, I’ll modify with a taller fence. Thanks for watching!
@@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees👍 Maybe smaller passes too. If I try and take off more than 3/4" it wants to bite too much. I'll take multiple passes when dadoing or lapping.
Great job! I will make one, good instruction, thank you!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching! Best wishes to you on your build.
Thank God I don't have a need for double walled pipe, but I would try some rock wool in between the 6" and 8" pipes, and save myself a bit of work. Code sucks, hate those miserable mud suckers.
I think that’s a good idea, but when I built this I used only what I had on hand. Thanks for watching!
I use the 1x8x8 boards… with 4 boards you can make 5 medium boxes. Currently $11.52 plus tax per board…
Thanks for the updated pricing! I haven’t built any for a while now and didn’t know current pricing. Best wishes to you.
cool Im doing the same thing, but instead of the tabs, using a 1" ceramic fiber blanket between pipes, was only $11 on amazon
Interesting idea! Thanks for sharing and for watching.
Easy basic design .....the other guys make these hectic complicated unnecessary hives......when all they need is a basic box like u made
Thanks for the kind words and for watching! These have worked well for me for a long time. Happy building!
Hope you, and your bees have a mild winter! Thanks for the videos.
Thank you my friend! Fingers crossed they come out the other side alright.
Good luck! I hope your bees winter well...
Thank you my friend, and same to you!
Left a comment on another of your vids- you need to find a way to be able to pull out pre filters as you go so you don’t plug up and stop the flow. I could see it in this vid, how the syrup flow-through slowed dramatically after only about 20 seconds of filtration. The first pre filters is clogging up and needs to be pulled
Thanks! Replied to the other comment.
You should find a way to set your pre filters into the top pot so you can remove them one by one as they clog up
Agreed, I tried cutting the pre-filters into smaller diameters that fit inside the top. I found it worked, but ultimately made more sense to just run smaller batches. I’m on the edge of stepping up to a different system but think I can squeeze a few more seasons out of this tool. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, Scott. It is about to turn winter here and I still need to finish getting in my firewood. I have a Harbor freight splitter that splits in both directions, maybe I will make a short video about it...
I’ve seen those, and would definitely watch a video! I enjoyed the mine videos you’ve been making. Thank you my friend.
"Sharpen the saw" means to take time for yourself doing something that you enjoy... Just like you are doing. Thanks for the video.
You got it! Thanks my friend.
No warm up. Cylinder damage right off the rip
I don’t know, it is still running good. I just used it yesterday. 🤷♂️
How come my fruit is still at the top? Barely bubbling? Is it done?
Its been 8 days
No hydrometer here
I’d say if it’s barely bubbling you could rack in into a secondary fermenter. I don’t have a lot of experience with whole fruit wines but when I’ve done it, it was about 7-10 days in the primary fermenter.
@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees its bubbling barely. Day 7. Im up in ny. The fruit will drop when it's ready?
I googled your question and didn’t get a conclusive answer, sorry.
Never stick your hydrometer in your bucket in case the sod breaks then you now have glass in your wine. First time drawer here and I had the sod break inside the tube, have no idea how.
Interesting, thanks for sharing your experience. What is the sod?
As a 50 year owner and user of radial arm saws the #1 safety tip for all radial arm saws is the table must be no smaller than 24" out from the fence and 48" wide. Keeping your distance from the blade is the key. This table is to small. Change the table size and you will see. Get a 24" X 48" 3/4 ply and 3" high fence. Screw the new ply right on top of the table you have and change the fence.
I made this video so long ago I’m not certain which part you’re referring to. We assume some risk with all tools and how we interact with them can be the most effective way to mitigate risk. Thanks for watching!
No saws means no wood. No wood means no homes. I now own 10 DeWalt RAS for a new purpose. But you can't do this with a Craftsman. Elevating crank must be on top the arm. ruclips.net/video/Oq7fOd_O5yM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/k7cBLq1rgPo/видео.html
That’s a lot of saws.
I used escape traps for many years with great success. Then my neighbor let me use his leaf blower if I was in a hurry to get supers empty of worker bees. In the autumn, most of the drones will be gone. Just have a way to move filled supers to honey house, like a sturdy garden cart. Stand the super on end and blow to bees off. Another way would be to shake them off and brush the remaining bees off. Place combs in an empty box onto a cart until moveable well enough. Nice to have empty super boxes
I don’t mind the brush off method, though it can be hard work. Once the escape boards are done I’ve used a borrowed battery blower but didn’t really like doing that to the bees. It did work well but seemed harsh. Thanks for watching!
I got a good batch of 1 1/4 " dry pine boards one time, various widths with no finished straight edges. Not to worry. I had a way to straight one edge. After planing the thick boards to a healthy 1 1/8th, I took stock of what I could get with very little waste. I could make narrower boards by cutting out the worst knots and dowel joining them to others to make deep boxes. Don't remember how many deeps I made, but over 2 dozen. Then I took various scraps of 3/4" pine stock, put a frame dado on one edge to use as box ends. Took my thicker longer sides and put a dado on the ends to accept the 3/4" end pieces. I didn't have enough end pieces to make 24 boxes, so I stopped when I ran out. I glued and screwed the boxes together and treated them with a waterproof oil of some sort, like deck oil. Try not to get any on the inside, as bees don't like it. The cost was very minimal for what I got out of the gift of lumber. All it cost me mostly was my time, which was free. If you have a table saw, and some time, you too can make your own hive boxes
Free wood is my favorite! I also don’t factor my time as a fixed cost because I enjoy the process. Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching!
You really only need to spin it if it is inside a graduated cylinder so the hydrometer does not stick to the glass it isn't going to stick on that 5 gal bucket.
Interesting, thank you for the advice and for watching.
Does that book give you information on how to build the bottom board?
It does, both solid and screened versions. I’ve got some videos of how I build both styles. Thanks for watching!
Which wedge do you recommend
I like the basic straight wedges best. Once you get the hang of it, the simple ones work great. I don’t know what brand these are but they’re widely available most places. Thanks for watching and for the question!
My excitement matched yours great video !!
Thank you!
First crank out the box SOLD!!!
Nice! I think these are a great value for the money. Thanks for watching.
Looks like you got a good ole stack already!! Keep going!! 😊
Thanks! I try to stay at least a year ahead but it doesn’t always work. Thanks for watching!
🤣🤣 that was good!!
Sometimes I get lucky 😂
Thank you!! These videos are so helpful
That makes me happy to hear! Thank you for the kind words and for watching.
Do you still have this bush hook? I would love to buy it! Willing to pay a pretty penny 🙂
I do still have it, although I wouldn’t sell it. I got it from a family member that has passed and their memory is dear to me. However, if you search online they are available for a reasonable price. Thanks for the offer, and for watching!
@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees Very sorry to hear that! I've searched the entire internet high and low to no avail, and it brought me here 😆 I will continue the search though. Thanks for the reply!

@scottthornandhisbeesandtrees It's hard to explain, but I need the 100% exact specific style axe in your video. Sorry for asking again, I know something like that would be hard to part with. There are a few sites that show pictures with that specific one but no stock anywhere. Think it's been phased out for a newer style a long time ago. Thanks!
Beautiful work!! Good song choice too!! Let’s get this song more popular 🔥🔥may you use this song for the next couple videos please?
😂 the music isn’t mine, just whatever I found in the RUclips library. Glad you liked it!
made in China
No secrets about that. It’s a version that the patent has expired on, and the Chinese company used the original design to make this knock off.
After 13yrs it literally takes seconds to load these. I bought a speed feed head 3yrs ago but it was no faster for me loading it because Id gotten so fast loading this one anyway. Then the speed feed junked out within 2 seasons, they're junk, these Husky heads are tanks & being professional heads each piece is sold seperately. Hell I put my OEM head back on & never looked back. I changed all my trimmers over to Husqvarna heads.
Red maple is pretty and straight grain
This tree was for the most part. There were some pieces that I didn’t even try because they were branches off the main trunk. Thanks for watching!
This colony should be very strong at this time of August. If mites are not dealt with the colony will not last thru the winter.
I added formic pro treatment a few days after filming. We have a good weather window where temps are in range for that. I’m hoping that helps but it’ll be a few weeks before I can get a good gauge on their strength. Thanks for watching!
Went ham on it 🪓 💪
Hahaha! Thanks for watching

I appreciate that!
That Axe is worth every penny. One of the best one hit wonders out there
I couldn’t agree more! Never heard it called a one hit wonder but I like that 😂😎
Do you use the wood for smoking or just for fires? 🔥 good video
@@duffjorgenson3391 I sell it and use it for heat in the winter months. I've got two 25ton wood splitters too . I use that Axe to split the huge rounds so I can pick them up to split in the big wood splitter
That’s awesome!! Looks like nice wood without a lot of knots. Thanks for the reply!
Thank you for the kind words! I use it for home heat and campfires. I have a pellet smoker for food.
lol, she was playing hide and seek, then popped out when she decided you were taking too long to find her.
😂 exactly! It’s hard to find one big in a box full of similar looking bugs so she got out by herself 😂 thanks for watching and the chuckle
Your title is what I've been saying about one of my colonies. Started March 30th from a package and by mid May they had 2 deeps & a super drawn and the super half full. 2 weeks later the queen was gone. They've been creating and replacing queen ever since and I have no idea why. I gave them a new queen and they killed her in favor of their own and then super seeded that queen anyway. They're a real mess.
Sorry to hear that, but it’s good to know I’m not alone! These bees need to read the same books as we do! 😂
😍😍😍😍From Algeria
Thank you!
Love the angle grinder
It was a little touch and go there for a bit but my friend is a wizard and helped this vision become real. Still works great several years later! Thanks for watching.
Those trees have seeded and grown on your land for a variety of reasons. But since they have died off, that's all moot. If you don't take them to burn, that's 2X the waste. Wasteful living haunts anyone who does that. You are a good man. Keep on keeping on.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching! I try to be a good steward of the land while I can. I also don’t mind leaving some deadfall to rot away in place for the critters that use it and to enrich the soil. Thanks again!
When I was younger I cut and split all my wood because I enjoyed it and had no money to buy it. Now for every $100 I pay per cord stacked, my back lets me split and stack a half cord. I'd rather support a hard working local than the gas company.
Thanks for sharing and for watching!
menomale che sulle istruzioni dice di togliere i melari, almeno qui in Italia è vietato utilizzare formic pro con i melari perché altera il sapore e rilascia formico nel miele
It is interesting that the same products have different rules in different countries. I agree it’s important to follow the label and haven’t had any issues. Thanks for watching!

Exactly! Happy beekeeping to you!
Jajaja you did nothing jajaqj
🤷♂️ you get what you pay for. Sorry you didn’t like the free video I made.
I have this conversation with my dad every year and what it always comes back to is that you enjoy doing it. And if you don’t you could sell your equipment and pay someone to maintain your property and bring you firewood. That sounds awful though.
Thank you! Yes I enjoy spending time outside and making firewood. Except I probably should have waited for this particular couple trees because it was very hot and humid 😂 happy chopping to you!
It's great that you get the exercise. I love using wood that would otherwise go to waste. You cannot apply value to free time because if you worked instead of cutting wood then you would gain more stress and less relaxation and recovery time which is valuable. Plus the exercise gained from collecting, splitting and carrying wood will extend your life way beyond the initial time spent. God Bless you.
Thank you! Good point, I don’t cut on normal work hours, either evenings or weekends so it’s not like I lost income. I hadn’t considered that angle before. Thanks for the kind word and for watching!
I always found it a good stress reliever.
Oh for sure! Especially splitting by hand.
Excellent project!
