Traditional Finnish Christmas foods from the Middle Ages
#finnishhistory #finnishculture
Yule, or Christmas in modern English, is an ancient Winter Solstice celebration in the North. Food and feasting is a central part of this festival, but the Christmas foods considered traditional are, in fact, quite modern. So let's explore some truly traditional, Medieval Christmas foods.

I love your videos, thank you !!!!!!! On Iceland and in Norway, the issue was HORSEmeat. In pagan times, an animal was sacrificed to the gods for yul. Blood was smeared on the walls of the "hov" (temple). The best sacrifice was obviously horse, it is hard to envisage the cooool gods like Odin, Thy and Thor would much apreciate the sacrifice of a chicken or a lamb. With christianity, the old hovs (temples) had to serve as churches. For the priests, stoping pagan rituals became a main issue. In Norway, the church "killed two birds with one stone" by collecting heavy penalties for the sin of eating horsemeat. The church did not manage to change the name of the pagan youl, but greatly enriched itself in this way. I and my family eat horsemeat for yul. Delicious!! -A somewhat delayed protest against abuse of power by the church. The icelanders had seen how badly this had gone in Norway, so they converted to christinaty explicitly without the interdiction against horsemeat. As for Denmark and Sweden, I assume the patern was similar to Norways, but I have seen no sources. Yours Jens. Oslo
Thanks! That's really interesting and haven't heard it before! How is horse meat seen nowadays and do you think it's affected by this history still?
Thanks!
Thank you! 🙌

I suppose a more modern TL might be along the lines of "Get em, boys", or if you want to go full zoomer then "Fuck it we ball" with a native splash. Either way I don't doubt it was used in at least some extent, if not as a regular warcry then at least as a shock tactic. Reputation and through it troop morale could be a pretty huge deal in those times after all.
@@Ghostly_One1 I think so too. The armies were often mercenaries who wouldn't be as eager to fight as soldiers from far North who would do anything to survive.
I've heard those sweet casseroles were due to once a year they could pour all the cyrup in few dishes. It makes sense since no one eats thsoe cassoroles outside christmas. Even my grandma hated them and tasted bad, but such was the tradition and it seems it wasnt even that long traditon :D My grandma said her grandparents rather used to eat uunijuusto at christmas since milk was something they always had and made different types of cheese dishes
Hmm that sounds like it makes a lot of sense for the rare time of gluttony

In the spring summer and fall do people make gardens, hunting, fishing, gathering wood for winter ? Or is it city and urban warfare on welfare day ? Or is it working class blues wishing for something easy ? God Bless you all in beautiful people land.
Non-snow season was largely for farming and such, and Winter for chill chores inside the house plus felling wood. Winter and Summer were also good for traveling to do business in the towns and such due to the waterways being open and frozen solid.
Love the way the narration began with a very subtle "no niin". 😄

See the pinned comment! :) It is in Finnish but their website has some stuff in English too: www.taivaannaula.org/in-english/
At the Battle of Wallhof in 1626, Sweden abandoned outdated caracole tactics, which proved ineffective against Polish heavy cavalry. Drawing from Polish winged hussar methods, Tott led Finnish hakkapeliittas in a decisive wedge formation (aura) attack. Striking swiftly from the flank, the tightly organized cavalry broke enemy lines, securing victory and demonstrating the superiority of direct, aggressive tactics. King Gustavus Adolphus gave Åke Tott the nickname “The Plow of the North” for his courage and the effectiveness of his cavalry attacks, particularly in wedge formations. About y1997, I observed a cavalry exercise in Ylöjärvi, Finland, where the Häme Dragoons practiced forming a wedge formation (resembling a plow or “aura” n Finnish) using six or seven horses. The horses were positioned tightly together, with the riders of the flanking horses aligning their knees behind the knee joints of the central horse’s rider. The horses were so close that their sides touched, and the rear horses’ bellies almost rested against the central horse’s hindquarters. The formation transmitted kinetic energy through the riders’ knee joints and the horses’ flanks, concentrating the force towards the lead rider and horse. When the group began moving at a gallop, the energy created by this tightly packed formation made the lead horse appear to lift off the ground from the combined power. This demonstrated the incredible force of the first pair in the formation and highlighted the historical effectiveness of the wedge in delivering overwhelming impact in battle.

From what I've heard Peter the Great was not very well liked in Russia at the time due to his suppression of the Orthodox Church and extensive persecutions of clergy who didn't tow the right line. As well a deconstructing many elements of the prior political system such as burning the book of ranks. Many of the other reforms were continuations though, especially those of the army. However because he took lots of land, and because few of his opponents would prosper enough to write about him he was largely seen in a positive light, it probably helped that in the very unstable (it might be correct to just say that he didn't change that aspect of Russian politics) court political system he installed saw use in his legacy to legitimise their own 'reforms' and repressions. It is interesting that figures like Alexander III and Nicholas II were conscious breaks in that lineage of 'enlightened' rule and yet also cracked down on the autonomy of subject people's, presumably it was because they were nationalists more so than actual feudal rulers, because otherwise they would have recognised that stoking discontent among ostensibly loyal vassals earned them nothing and cost them much.

Enemmistö suomalaisista on jo pitkään kannattanut ruotsin kielen opetuksen muuttamista pakollisesta valinnaiseksi.
Järkyttävän kalliiksi on suomalaisille tullut vahvan Ruotsin puolustaminen omista eduistamme välittämättä!
