IFS Podcasters Roundtable: Insights into Internal Family Systems
In this episode of Going Inside: Healing Trauma From The Inside Out, David Polidi leads a roundtable discussion of #IFS podcasters-Tammy Sollenberger, Natalie Deering, Tim Fortescue, and myself, John Clarke. We explore the internal conflicts and polarizations that arise during creative projects like starting a podcast, how trauma disconnects us from our authentic selves, and the role of #InternalFamilySystems Therapy in reconnecting with self-energy. Together, they share personal insights on finding clarity, overcoming fears, and deepening self-awareness through IFS.

What is Self and Self-Energy? A Deep Dive Into the Core of IFS
Просмотров 15914 часов назад
In this solo episode of "Going Inside," I dive deep into the concept of Self and Self-energy in the context of Internal Family Systems (#IFS) therapy. While IFS often begins with discussions about our inner parts-like the perfectionist, the inner critic, or the inner child-I believe that the true heart of the model lies in understanding and accessing Self-energy. Whether you're familiar with IF...

Great episode! Many thanks. You mentioned that our Self is who we truly are. Does this mean that we are born with 8 C's and 5 P's. I am trying to figure out who I truly am minus my parents upbringing. Is this at all possible? Many thanks
I’ve watched this twice now, and it’s astounding to me that after 8 years of being in IFS-focused therapy I never knew half this information about self energy!! Incredibly helpful. Thank you for taking the time to explain it and make the information available to everybody.
you're so welcome :)
John idk how aware you are, but the audio is super low, I appreciate the insights, just wanted to offer that feedback.
Thanks for a great presentation ❤ I believe more and more that Love is the same as Qi - prana, spirit, lifeforce, and according to bioenergetic this energy/ force can be blocked/ trapped in different part of the body, (chakras) due to childhood traumas, neglect, abuse, etc.
@@2biicoachingformndkarlotto317 so well said!
@@JohnClarkeTherapy Thanks
What is your favourite meditation for connecting with Self? I find the Path difficult to do.
@@levpsychotherapy1762 check out my guided meditation on unblending !
Very astute repositioning of Self as the core of IFS. It needs to be said that we're doing all this therapy to unburden the Self, not just to eliminate pain, but then to thrive. Perhaps the parts that we ask "what would you like to do now" after healing might like to work together with the Self on further Self actualisation? Though parts having a holiday from working against the Self is still good!
Self doesnt need to be unburdened though. Dick Schwartz says it cant be damaged. That is the beauty of Self, that it isnt carrying burdens or agendas. More like the no self of Buddhism.
@@levpsychotherapy1762 good point. I could have said “unburden self” but that would be mostly impenetrable. Maybe “unburden ourselves” would have worked.
@@kanguruster thank you for your amazing contribution!
thank you for hosting so many valuable quests on your show. Every time I'm blown away to see how deep this work is and sooo grateful to find out such a practical and effective system.

@@elysiaergle9355 that means a lot to me!
What do mean 'resistance' therapy? How could you be a therapist of any kind and not be aware of resistance. It's part of the process.
Thanks for the question! And I couldn’t agree with you more, which is actually the whole reason for this project. I chose the name The Resistance Therapist because I specialize in supporting people on their health & wellness journey as well as the professionals in those fields to work with resistance as an ally rather than as a barrier or problem. (And no, it’s not a particular kind of therapy, but a framework that can be applied on all kinds of health & wellness professions.) In my experience as a client and professional myself, it’s less an issue of awareness of resistance and more one of how it’s actually approached. I always say that if you’re already a resistance wizard and feel comfortable and confident working with your own or others’ resistance, then what I offer will likely only confirm what you already know. Which I think is great!
@@theresistancetherapist I don't see how you could be therapist and not know how to approach/deal with resistance. They'd run into it every day. It'd be like not knowing how to approach anger or childhood issues.
💯I totally agree with you - I think it’s actually the foundation of therapy. However, there are many different approaches to resistance, most of which (in my personal and professional experience) aren’t very effective or supportive for the client. And as a supervisor, I can tell you that many people aren’t given any specific training around resistance - the training often focuses on skills that are used once the client is all in on the process. Just like with anger or childhood trauma, there is no one way to work with resistance and there are a ton of nuances. As therapists, we continue honing our training for as long as we are in the field, so I might take the different courses on hope to work with anger that give three totally different frameworks. Also - I support other health and wellness professionals, too, who largely aren’t trained at all to work collaboratively with resistance. It’s usually framed as a problem to be pushed through or gotten over. Hopefully this along with the content of the video clarifies things a bit! And again, there are plenty of people who are great at navigating resistance, and I’m glad that there are.
Why would it not be advisable to do EMDR on your own? Would it be OK to program a Generative AI with the protocol and do that on your own? 😆Surely the therapy profession has enough work already, and your jobs are not in danger of disappearing? There's so much trauma in regions that would never be able to pay a therapist, surely traumatised people should be able to use DIY EMDR?
@@kanguruster thanks for your reply! Interesting ideas. I agree therapy is expensive and people with less means should absolutely have access to good therapy. The main risk in doing EMDR on yourself or with an app would be getting yourself very dysregulated, retraumatized, dissociated, etc
Thanks for the opportunity to connect and explore resistance through the absolutely vital lens of trauma! 🙏🏻🌵
that waa wayyy to fast for me.
Another excellent episode of Going Inside! I found the discussion of covert resistance enlightening. I look back at a certain time in therapy (EMDR, not IFS) that I can now recognise as not coming from Self, i.e. it felt "a bit off", with my personal equivalent of "I love therapy, I want to know myself and feel my trauma" surprising mySelf into wondering "where does _THAT_ come from?!" The what is covert resistance and the why might have been to keep self-sabotage and feelings of unworthiness a secret. Thanks for sharing such an open and informed discussion.
Thanks for the feedback, and so glad you enjoyed the episode! I’m glad that the covert/overt resistance framework was helpful. 🙌🏻
Lack of direct eye contact and a bed in one video freaks me out. I find it hard to trust a practitioner ❤
What if I keep on thinking of my ex-partner who, although we were together only 1yr I allowed her to come to close and hurt myself by it. Still she popps up every other day in my thoughts, without wanting to. What to do with this... ? It is over 12 yrs ago. It feels since this experience i am afraid of letting women connect to me with their hearts and I am closing up my chest area automatically..
As if my system is confusing "receiving love & sincere connection", with "intrusiveness and giving my agency away". Or something like that
Anger is not a problem. Aggression & violence - problem. Writing has been shown to reduce emotional distress, including anger. It is called Expressive writing. Or emotional writing. Writing uses a different area of the brain which helps to re-regulate your emotional distress/neurological distress - which is a classic sign of trauma.
Great video. I love how you explained both of these models!
thanks David!
I received EMDR therapy years ago but never quite got to know the science behind it, this is fascinating! thank you!

Hey Elena! I help teach at an online program for IFS called stepping stones, the organization is called IFSCA. If you’re interested in doing a demo with me, just email me a paragraph or two about yourself to john@johnclarketherapy.com
Yesterday I sat with my feeling of deep pain in heart, like sadness or grief. I did conscious breathing for couple of hrs, like saying to myself “breathing through” the feeling-while breathing in, “breathing over” the feeling while breathing out. After this process as if I felt more connected to the feeling where feeling started opening up to me. Still, I saw that there is a cocoon over the feeling I asked it to open up the cocoon and tell me what message it has for me And then suddenly sad image of my mother came up. Like in my infantile years, my mother felt lonely depressed and as an infant I absorbed her pain that is still pulsating in me in my psyche as my sad inner child. I talked to that infant and my mother, reassured them, was with them without any judgement and sent lots of love from here in year 2024 to them in year 1977-78. I told them I understand your pain, I am proud of you both and you both are winner as I am proving it as adult self now. I kept engaged to them for around 2 hrs while keeping the breathing-through, breathing-into exercise live again and again. To especially my infant self. I reminded him about how we overcame past hurdles, and how resourceful I am now. Looked like the infant felt relief and smiled, I continued my engagement. Felt little tired, but saw peace within, I felt my feeling is at rest, I did not feel happy more than yesterday since years. Guys IFST is real Feel the feelings and talking to them for reeducating them or reparenting them is real. I was hearing on this since 2019, but was not having that deeper trust in it but slowly when my circumstances pushed me to apply this healing fully, the results were there. Be very intense and compassionate in reaching to these feelings, breathing exercise will help you, and then say to these feelings that it did not hear when it was formed first time......and here you will have the healing.... for me it worked after 30 yrs of puzzle and confusion.... :). By evening that day in years I first time felt my CPTSD inner pain inner sadness is at 0%. And one thing is sure u need a lot of patience, courage and acceptance to the inner pain when you dive in to your feelings. Feelings want you to listen to it, to feel it to get it validated and then to complete with the pressing issue that was there when first time the feeling got created. Your psyche, soul, spirit, nafs is a real entity. May be it is easy for this internal energy form of you to fragment and become many sub-selves, and these sub-selves got stuck in the time. You need to time travel back in time in your meditation having focus on your feeling, talking to them with compassion and then provide their unmet need. Once you do this completion process again and again the feelings come to rest and you get inner peace, joy and happiness, freedom to feel your true self fully and engage in life powerfully. And in all this above process bringing God to your side always helps after even your inner psyche is a created entity, the basic energy form and its creation that only its creator knows very well. Bring this higher power to your side and start your journey

This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing the session.
unfortunately none of the therapy modalities have any robust evidence supporting them - I think the reality of therapy is summed up with rare honesty by former president elect of the British Psychological Association, Professor Nigel MacLennan, titled 'Why Most Psychotherapies Are Equally Ineffective' Also read the three key books by William M Epstein - he's dismantled the industries best evidence base across his books, the illusion of psychotherapy, psychotherapy as religion and psychotherapy and the social clinic in the united states, soothing fictions - there are many others but most therapist are ignorant regarding the critics - this is why the research around the harms of psychotherapy routinely states' the harms are well known but under researched' most of the harms done in the world in my view, are done by well meaning but ignorant people. also try Paul Maloney's book the therapy industry.

Great meditation. Perfect pace and you have a warm and empathetic voice❤
This meditation progressed too quickly for me. I was still trying to get a sensation/image/idea of the part(s) I was blended with, when you already moved on. I would prefer some pauses to process images/feelings/sensations that come up.
I foud it wonderful 🤩🤩
Your videos help me a lot 🙏
Do parts lie?
yes they can
@@pug7053How do you know if the part is telling the truth? Can you give me an example?
I lost faith in IFS last year after my therapist said the model didn't support entities. This is the final missing piece of the jigsaw and has restored my faith in IFS.
If my faith in IFS were based on the therapists I've seen in person, I would have lost faith also. The only thing sustaining hope for me are RUclips videos, which is immensely sad and I think speaks to the overwhelming impotence of many so-called therapists.
