In the north of Thailand there is a climb so long and steep it must be one of the toughest road climb races in the world! I entered the annual Doi Ang Khang KOM Challenge (Feb 2nd 2025) and decided I needed to go and see what all the fuss was about :) So, Michael, Jeff and I headed 150kms north to Fang to check out some of the local ultra-steep climbs and see just how bad DAK is 😳 strava.app.li...

Riding Wales’ highest mountain for the solstice!
Most riders take car/bike to the start point, you ride to the start point. Really an avid biker! BTW 390 baht with aircon, a good deal when it is not a tourist spot.
Almost wished I had been there :) - nice one Kieran - thanks for a terrific video!
Respect for all the brompton riders going up mountains like that!
There’s always one. Even on the Taiwan KOM! 😂
Kieran reserving a hotel 2 months ahead must have been a busy event
Nah, just easier to pay cash while I was there :)
Big Congrats Kieran !!🚲🏆🏅
Where was the finish line? After that corner that we stopped?
Exactly. Another couple hundred mts further on
Alright, podium! Well done!!!🤙
You coulda won it I think!
@@kieranbarry8193 would never know 😁. How far ahead where the other 2?
What a beautiful climb and an amazing result-especially while narrating for RUclips! 😂
Here to serve 🙏 😂
What's your bike set-up? gearing? tyres?
Grx810 crankset so 31-48 chainrings with a 34-11 cassette. Panaracer Gravelking SS+ 35mm for this tour.
I just started using Mapsme in Malaysia, mostly navigating to tourist attractions in town. Works great, but if I chose bicycle it totally sends me on one way roads against traffic 🫣. It also drains the phone battery quite fast. But still good when no wifi.
18:00 Did you take off the wheels? Looks like that. And where are they then?
Wheels off and in a large trash bag. Another trash bag stretched over the frame. It was good enough apparently :)
15:15 Did you ever try Komoot? For planing quite ok, but also sometimes it leads you to weird ways with gravel or takes a short cut, which is not really recommended. But overall usable. Especially you can choose your kind of bike: Mountainbike, Gravelbike, Touringbike, Roadbike, Hiking etc But you pay once 20€ for the map, when there is a offer. Regular 30€ for the hole world map. But no subscription. No monthly payments.
Yeah I’m a paid up member :)
Nice! Im still planning on riding into Malaysia 🇲🇾, but it has been raining so much here...
Embrace the rain! Malaysia is wet af 😂
@kieranbarry8193 🫣😁
Oh man, you visit all the places on my bucket list and reveal that already 😁 Penang is the Durian paradise, many plantations there. That's why I wanna visit it anytime. I love Durians.
Actually they say that Raub is where the best durians come from. I passed through there in Part 1 but it wasn’t durian season unfortunately
@@kieranbarry8193 That village name is funny, cause it is also a german word and means robbery ^^
Nice! I'm really considering retracing your steps 😁, but starting from Singapore. Would have you done anything different from the route you took? Besides going straight to the ferry?
You mean going to the right ferry I guess? I would have explored the north east more if it hadn’t been for the floods. And over the border at Betong into Yala
You mean the Cameron Highlands, Ipoh area? Because you didn't really go east, right?
I will look at where you crossed the border in the following videos. Are the Yala and Betong area safe, I assume? I haven't done any research about it yet. I heard Songkla is fine, but some other border areas next to it are not
@@vivaaloha2020that’s north west. Im talking about north east of the peninsula. Check the crossing at Betong into Yala. I think Yala should be fine nowadays unless you’re of a nervous disposition :)
@kieranbarry8193 Oh, I'm getting west and east mixed up. Coming from Brazil, we only use right or left 😄. I gotta look into the crossings.
As they say up here in Balquhidder, your some man👌although maybe a Glasgow term.
Enjoyed that! (p.s. never mind KL, don't cyclen in Wrexham!!)
Looks like cat heaven
More than Thailand even! 😳
Nice! So much rain tho... I might retrace your routes soon. Happy new year!
This is fantastic. Look forward to seeing more of your adventures. How did you find the choices for finding on the bike food?
In Malaysia?? Some of the world’s best food! No end of choices :)
Brilliant Kieran, happy new year👍
Michael is a man of few words, so he chooses carefully. See you guys soon.
Another good one! Damn close call on that gravel corner!!! I am glad I missed the mosquitos in Chiang Dao 😁😁
This one is brutal. It's the second highest peak after Doi Inthanon. Doi (hill/mountain) Pha Hom (blanket) Phok (cover/protect)
And yet it wasn’t quite as severe as Ang Khang 🤷♂️
@@kieranbarry8193 True, that one is the most brutal in all hill climbs, I walked about 30% 20 years ago. Doi Inthanon, I also walked about 10%.
Must be a tough one if you are struggling with the world's greatest climbing bike, the Giant TCR
‘It’s not about the bike’ ;)
17:07 is the border protected somehow? Because looks easy to cross the river.
Ha! Well there lies the issue…
This isn‘t the bike, which you had in Da Nang, is it? That one looks like a carbon frame. In Da Nang you had a aluminium bike (black one?)
I have many bikes :) This is my road bike
@ Yeah I guess so. But did you store the road bike in Chiang Mai? Or do you also travel with it in the postcarry?
Great video .... and you have to pay to enter ! .... Beautiful scenery .
good one! 🙃
Good team support :)
The mountain scene is spectacular. BTW, Guan-im is a Bodhisattva, not Buddha. Here is from Google: The main difference between a Buddha and a bodhisattva is their spiritual goals and how they pursue them: Goal A Buddha has achieved personal enlightenment and liberation from rebirth, while a bodhisattva delays their own liberation to help others achieve enlightenment. Methods A Buddha shares the Dharma to teach others how to overcome suffering and recognize their Buddha nature. A bodhisattva practices compassion and selflessness to help others on their spiritual paths. Iconography Bodhisattvas are usually depicted as less austere than Buddhas. Beliefs In Mahāyāna Buddhism, the ultimate goal is for all believers to become Buddhas. In Theravada Buddhism, the bodhisattva path is reserved for certain exceptional people. The word "Buddha" means "Awakened One" in Sanskrit. The word "bodhisattva" literally means "a being who desires to attain enlightenment".
Yeah, I’ve been studying Buddhism for about 30 years :) Kuan Yin is the female form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion but really at this level, Buddha and bodhisattva are pretty much interchangeable 🤷♂️ Just seen a huge Kuan Yin in Penang
What gearing are you using?
34/34 for most of this climb. Anything harder would be a real challenge
The worse the noodles, the better the scenery 🙂
The lotus pond looks beautiful. After the rain, the trees look very green. From Khun Yuam to Mae Jaem the road is quite nice, hardly any traffic.
Yeah, a lot of climbing but it’s a lovely road!
Cool watching. Planning to do CM-MHS and continuing down to MaeSot over X-Mas. Might see you in CM first?
Im currently in Malaysia but should be back in CM in a week
Thanks for the interesting ride ...
Wonderful
Watch a few episodes, it seems you like sticky rice very much. Must be one of the cheapest food for a long bike trip. In Thailand in the old days, sticky rice is a stable food for Isan laborers as it is filling and providing energy for a long hard day.
I ❤ sticky rice :) Great energy for lean labourers and cyclists!
Que lindo!
Great stuff!
This kind of road with hardly any traffic is ideal for bike touring. If I haven't seen it, I could hardly believe that rubber trees are grown in Lamphun. Normally they are grown in the South and later spread to the east (Chanthaburi, Rayong, Trat) and then to Isan South.
Yeah it’s the first time I’ve seen them around here 🤷♂️
It does seem that rural road uphill is rarely used as there is hardly any traffic.
Very little. Probably as it’s just so steep
The packing is neat, covering all basics.
Sponsor was the first sport drink introduced into Thailand by the company that owns Kathingdaeng (Red Bull) energy drink, 40 years ago. It instantly became popular and is still the No.1 sport drink in Thailand. It was priced at 10 baht for more than 3 decades and the price rose to 12 baht a few years ago. 7-11 has both the bottle at 12 baht and a larger can at 17 baht? Though Kathingdaeng was No.1 energy drink for more than 3 decades, it was toppled by M150 about 10 years ago. Osotsapha which produces M150 also introduced sport drink as well but is distant No.2.
Well, you really know your Thai sports drinks :) I don’t really drink sports or energy drinks normally but sponsor is cheap and tasty….always the yellow one for me :)
First time ever seeing youtube video on Mae Hong Son loop by pedal bike. I used to do this twice 24 and 20 years ago taking 7 days each on a mountain bike. Do you see why they call water buffaloes because they do enjoy water so much!
Oh plenty of cyclists do it nowadays :)
👍
Wonderful. Many thanks Kieran👌
Very nice 👌🏻 We are also planning to do the mae hong son loop next week. Recently heard about the heavy rain and flood situation there, how is it now? You have any idea about that?you did this trip in November? Could you please help here, we need to book our stay accordingly
I did it just after the rains as I said in the vid and it was all passable. The only bad bit was descending back to CM from Pai but that was weeks ago now so I suspect they’ve cleared it a lot more. You’ll be fine
Any idea about road conditions now?
thanks a lot for the response! May I know exactly in which week of November you did the loop please
@@kaustubhj2943it was first half of October. All the Strava links (with dates) are linked in the video descriptions. I left literally the day after the floods began so things can only have improved. All roads are perfectly paved
