Lagrange Bees
Канада
Добавлен 30 май 2020
I am a new beekeeper starting out in eastern Canada. Wishing to share what I learn with other beekeepers so that we may all learn from one another and have fun in the process. I also have interests in video games, most sciences, but astronomy (Where the name Lagrange came from) and quantum mechanics are particularly fascinating to me. I also make the occasional art project and may share some of those.
If I'm lucky I would like to eventually live from beekeeping starting with 6 hives, and ending who knows where!
But for now, lets start with hobby beekeeping.
As for the accent, although I am bilingual (I speak both English and French) , I rarely get to speak English in the area where I live, unfortunately.

Reducing The Brood Nests In Preparation For Winter
Winter is coming, and I gotta make sure that all the hives are down to 1 brood chamber. So it's time to give the bees a good shake :)

It was horribly hot, so I decided to break down the honey pull into smaller increments, but the result is just as sweet :)
Completing Several Small Tasks

Too early to start harvesting, I have a few straggler nucs and hive needing queens, I need to set more nucs into proper hive boxes... Busy, busy, busy!

Last weeks failures didn't stop me, I had to make due without my grafting equipment so I went for Walk Away splits. It turned out very well!

Finding frames off mature / emerging brood for this year's starter-finisher was a little more intensive than expected as there was a lot of recent emergence.
Managing Swarming And Missing Queens

The exceptional vigor my bees have this year are keeping me on my toes and it looks like one of my queen did not make it through the apiary move.
Moving My Apiary After Some Vandalism

The strawberry field apiary had a hive knocked over on its back when I came in this week. So I contacted the land owner and arranged for an "emergency move".

Grafting Queens: Mistakes, Failures And Successes.
I think you should add another super, looking a bit packed 😬
well, that was 3 years ago during the fall close up, so the supers had to be removed for winter.
Equipment storage space. It sure can limit things. Nice job Alex! What are your plans for post harvest treatments?
The strawberry apiary received apivar. The basswood one was a mud trap for too long, I still need to harvest that place, It's getting late so I may have to switch to Formic to finish it on time.
Alex had a Good Day in the Bees.🥰Blessed Days Alex...
Thank you :)
Alex if you have the funds this Winter, Would you please GET SOME GLOVES THAT FIT YOU!🤣😂Oh it hurts sometimes you fumbling with those things, maybe some of those New Tactical style Beekeeper gloves. Beekeeper glove technology sucks, there could be so many improvements to beekeeper gloves. Almost ALL the gloves beekeepers wear are to large fort their hands.
HAHA! honestly they look worse than they actually are :)
Morning Alex, Time to start getting them reconfigured for Fall so they will be ready for Winter. We were talking about you and your Over-Wintering process on Charlies Live last night. Nice location for bees.👍
Hope they were talking about it in a positive way lol
@@lagrangebees Absolutely. Pretty much in agreement that you have a good handle on it!
@@MinnesotaBeekeeper Happy to hear that :)
Thank you for sharing ,Alex
I know it isn't much, but there is little going on and it's kinda hard to make something interesting >.<
Good on you Alex! You overwintered them, split and harvest. All absolutely grand.
Well done Alex! My apiary is at home, so it is a bit easier. I have a little 4-wheel Canadian Tire pull truck with a super (covered of course) on it and drop them in one by one and then drag them to the garage. I am encouraged to see you do a small harvest. I only got 46kg from 6 full production hives and am wondering why that is about half of what other beekeepers seem to get. Is it because I live beside a lake and so 50% less foraging area? Is it because there are no farms anywhere within flying distance (just some gardens and lots of forest)? Is it the genetics of my super calm queens from Anicet? Something else? Your thoughts? I am in year 4 and finally getting to the point where I have enough drawn comb (if that is ever possible). I have about 24 nucs in the same apiary, so I did steal some bees and comb but tried to restrict myself to stealing them from the brood factories and not the production colonies. Might over crowding be an issue?
yea making several smaller pulls is better for me... because I'm sure I have about twice as much honey this year. As for why you get less honey than average, I honestly don't know but my best guess is a combination of the above factors. I've only been beekeeping for 5 years, Sooooo I'm no expert :)
Nice Alex! You and your bees had another great year!
my bees certainly get me a few times lol
Holy smokes I see what you mean Wayne!
Those are some nice looking frames Alex. I wish we had a flow like that. I would know what to do.
Grats Alex.👍
Am I being congratulated on the horrible heat? Because I swear it's not my fault! 🤣
Thanks Alex! How’s your harvest looking overall so far? When does your flow end?
the harvest overall... I Guestimate about a ton (2250lbs) the flow slowed a lot but isn't completely down. Now, if it could stop raining on friken weekends >.<
Stay cool Alex
When i got home, I was SO glad I had an AC 😁
Good looking honey frames Alex .I just got done with my honey pull 1223 lbs
That is one awesome harvest! Very happy for you 😁 What kind of honey do you get?
@@lagrangebees I have a farm clover and trees and wildflowers
Very nice video Alex ! I’ve been going down your playlist and watching your videos. Happy keeping
Thank you :) This is very appreciated 😁
Bravo ! ça s'envient bien, tu fait du beau travail !
Merci :)
Looking good Alex. When will your harvest start? Looks like a good honey crop for you.
I'll start this weekend and try to chip away at it as much as possible. maybe harvesting 6 supers the weekend and 3 more during the week, so I have a constant stream of low work rather than a giant harvest all at once
@@lagrangebees Following Russell's method I did the same. Great way to balance the load Alex.
Do the bees have name tags like 'Hi My Name is Sting'? Just joking hope you have a good harvest, very good quality video
Oh yea the harvest will be at the limits of what I can manage. And no, I haven't seen any name tags on my bees
Alex, looks like things are going well. I hope your having a great year.with the bees, and hope you get lots of honey. Take care.
I'm having an OMG THAT'S A LOT OF HONEY year lol :)
Looking good Alex Bees look strong
Yea, gonna have to make sure they're not too strong before winter starts.
Good to see ya Alex. Wonder why this didn't show up on my Notifications, you would think YT could do it's job better.
YT works in mysterious (broken) ways :D
Thanks!
🙂
Car break downs are a pain in lots of ways. The pocket book is the worst.
Oh yea, replacing those brake lines left a crater in my wallet. but hey, you know it's nice to be able to stop the car 🤣 (I REALLY lucked out, the brake lines burst while I was parked)
Hi at 5:15 is that foundation or drawn comb you added above the excluder? I saw what looked like drawn comb but you said more frames to draw. If foundations, they will swarm unless you remove the excluder for a couple of weeks to allow them to move up. Then you can shake them down, put back the excluder and harvest 24 days later.
Ha! That's something that would happen to me! Glad you found her. It's always something. Take Care!
I'm glad too, she gave me quite the scare :)
Thật tuyệt vời chúc bạn thành công và thu hoạch được nhiều mật
Looks at those legs😂man your lucking I'm not a honey bee I'd thing the crap out of those.🤣 😁Hi Alex.
LOL
Yea, I didn't laugh when I realized that the queen hitched a ride (at first) 😁
Bees are looking great Alex. And thank god you found the Queen.
it's certainly a nice upgrade from my grafting attempt :)
Very nice Alex
Thank you :)
Alex is making honey.😁
Yes, yes I am, I eat flowers and then spit them back out... VOILA! Instant honey! 🤣
Glad to hear all is doing good thank you
Took a while bit it's all good :)
Alex do you have any midsummer mite treatments?
No, I usually treat only in Spring and Fall.
Looking good Alex
Thank you :)
Sweet - put your hives underneath a basswood. That's cheating. LOL
No such thing as cheating in beekeeping (maybe?) 😁
Congrats! Things are looking up for ya! Are these resource nucs for the season or are you planning to build them into full hives?
4 will be dedicated resource hives, the rest are replacements to get up to 30 production hives. They *Should* help me recover from next winter's winter losses :)
Alex, your probably right about moving a queen, also the laying worker shouldn't be as your splits were only 7 days old. It may have been a new q Been from your grafting and she wasnt set in pattern yet. Glad most of it worked for you. Bonne fete jour du Canada, I think I said that close to right..lol take care.
there were eggs only in emergency cells, nowhere else. I know I shouldnt have laying workers after only 7 days. But it's too late now, the nuc was reconstructed >.<
@@lagrangebees ya, weird stuff can happen. Well good luck with the newly reconstructed split.
Thank you Alex
Thank you as well for the comment and view, it Really helps :)
😁Sweet.👍
Yea, it worked out OK, not the grafting I wanted but, what works, works :D
Good luck Alex. Great video.
Thanks! That and just perseverance I guess :)
Great to see your success.
I guess being stubborn sometimes is an asset 😁
9:22 A quality queen cell needs to be drawn and fed by a strong queenless colony. Simply placing eggs into a queenless nuc isn't a good approach to producing a quality queen. Sorry your queens didn't work out. Did you learn why your nucs depopulated?
I didn't go into a long explanation of what I was planning. but I did more than merely give eggs, made sure the population was high and that there was good bee bread and nectar reserves.
1:56 Alex. 1. Take the gloves off. Queens and gloves are a very bad combination. 2. Pull that plunger up and lock it before trying to catch a queen.
Thanks, will do :)
That’s sucks bud! Just remember ‘who dares wins’
Already re-made all the splits as walk aways.
Well that isn't good, that's a bummer Alex. Best of luck buddy, Blessed Days...
I'll just keep making Nucs until I have returned to 30 hived :)
Sorry to see things didn't go so great. I had a bunch of trouble with my splits this year using grafted queens. More than half didn't make it back from their mating flights is the best I can guess. I ended up just combining them with other nucs. Hope your next round is more successful!
Thank you, I do hope to get some queens too :)
That is a bummer for sure. An option that makes sense to me (LOL) is combine some of the nucs say to 4 or 5 to build up their population for making a queen, then bring in a frame with eggs and nurse bees. If you build up all your nucs you will have to deplete too many production hives and there goes your honey crop. Good luck in whatever you do Alex.
made 14 splits... only 4 had any semblance of activity. SO I just gave them all 1 to 3 frames and hope they make queens.
We have all had troubles with are bees just keep trying it will work out.
I rebuilt all the nucs as walk away splits, hopefully I get at least the amount of queens I need.
What’s the treatment your using
Formic acid, one of the mite treatments allowed with honey supers on in Canada :)
Do you know if it affected the taste of the honey?
@@kimlamparter4851 in my experience, it doesn't.
Lots of bees in there! That outta do it! Thanks for sharing!
the result was nice, only 13 took (and I accidentally crushed 2 😢) but they were amazing looking cells. Unfortunately I couldn't film it. had to do "Emergency splits" in the middle of the week because of bad weather that was coming and had to hurry.
