Well done Norm, good progress and at some pace too. Coust thee not drill an undersize oil hole in the bearing and grub it to the Mandrel? Probably a stupid idea, I'm good at they.
@@adgecutlerofthewest Definitely would have worked and as we needed a hole for oil not a bad shout at all. I’m a bit behind on the video editing. I used a big clamp and was able to get enough bite to have at it albeit standing to one side out of the firing range.
@@VintageIronuk I thought that you'd already of jumped that hurdle. Your method adds a bit of excitement anyway!
@@adgecutlerofthewest Tis a flaw in this video making always a week or 2 behind unfortunately. Didn’t get much footage doing the turning as most of the time was spent hiding from the spinning clamps of death!

All looking very nice so far 👍🏼 gimme a shout if you ever need a hand fitting things or whatnot
@@fowler_steam will do mate! I’ve got to get round to getting that governor assembly removed and the link sent your way. 👍
Next weeks video… Norman speaks from his hospital bed😆🫣🤦♂. It’s coming together nicely now, you make some big jumps ahead when the bearing is cut to size 👌👍
@@casto- 😆 Bring me some parts to paint while I’m in there! Hard to get it all on film once we start to get stuck in to it.
@@VintageIronuk 😆 if you’re not careful I’ll be bringing tractor parts for you to do instead 🤣. Yeah I know what you mean… you’ll just have to do your best lol
allways of interest😊😊
I always look forward to your videos!
@@markloving11 Thanks mate, hoping to keep up with the one a week.
Great video, thank you. What is the history of the engine you are rebuilding?
@@treverrin I’ve not got much history on the engine. Its number is 2949 if you wanted to see what you could find. Thanks for watching
Cracking job making good progress very time consuming lots of patience, keep up the good work love it👍
Your making good progress. What about taking a strip of paper 180 from the part line of bearing on each side, then clamp in place. the paper will compress and hold the bearing tight to the mandrel? Problem solving it's a great life. Cheers
@@Randysshop Bloody good idea, that would definitely have worked. She did just about grip with the mandrel turned down a bit and a clamp to put a bit of squeeze on it. Cheers 👍
@@VintageIronuk Looking forward to see how it turns out.👍
looking good congrats on hitting your first 1K subscribes
That not a clamp! That’s a mich!! Oh no it’s ok you were only showing what you ment! ;-) Great work this week
@@Nick-pr5gw Thanks for watching mate 👍
You've made some good progress this week ! plenty of head scratching and checking going on. Thanks for this weeks update. Brian from South Yorkshire.
@@782sirbrian thanks for sticking with us Brian. Should soon start coming together and making more sense. 👍
Good video 👌
Beautiful engine. Nice work. One day I would like to build one for myself.
I had to make similar locking dowels recently for my aveling final drive gear ring. They are carrot style bolts with dowels instead of pins. I drilled and tapped a hole in the side before putting the taper on the head. Once they were made I wound in a standard bolt in the side with lock tight and cut to length.
its going in the right direction
Does make you wonder how the old boys in the day made stuff for engines. Now you can knock stuff up with CNC in 10mins… I was watching old Fred last night for a couple of hours😆👌👌. Doing well Norman and the channel is growing well mate👍👍
@@casto- It definitely makes you scratch your head of some of the stuff they done with what little they had. Wonder how many pins they made the wrong length due to not zeroing their dro 😆 roll on ep 750 re lighting the fire 🔥 Cheers
@@VintageIronuk 🤣🤣I bet they only did it once! Or they’d be flogged in the streets 😆. I hope your done a bit quicker than that, think I’ll have retired by then🤣🤣🫣
@@VintageIronukfor 'dro' read 'folding wooden ruler with brass trim'!
Nice work . I love to see how these bits are made. It’s very time consuming work . 👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@markclifton14 Thanks for watching mark, makes picking up the camera worth while cheers 👍
Great work you are doing I wonder if it was harder work to get things precise when it was originally built.
@@colinsmith6280 Would have been a lot harder back then. We are spoilt with digital read outs and modern measuring tools. Lots of bits must have been hand fit and just made to work.
Nice job Norman, good thing about watching your videos it saves me making scrap down my work shop! Do you have the same problem as me every new bit I make for my engine I can't bring myself to throw the old bit away so I'm going to end up with a spare worn-out engine! Keep up the good work 👍
@@chrisanderson7370 exactly that mate!! We will end up with 3 engines the original/first attempt/and the finished article!! Glad I’m not the only one 😆
Lots of little parts to be done for sure. With all the internal bores to be fitted a Sunnen rod hone would be great for the job. Cheers
@@Randysshop I pulled out an old delapena hone I’ve got, emailed delapena about getting the stones but they didn’t want to know. If I could find the stones and arbor I would like to use it. Cheers
Keep going, old son. Really enjoying this!
Keep going lots of patience, will be well worth it when done
Top job, the short pin's a bit of a bugger but we all do it

@@casto- Nearly put me to steep this video 😆 To be fair I didn’t even know this tool existed until it turned up for me to use. With the amount I’ve used it I’m now an expert!! If you need and internal grinding doing give me a shout!! Hope all is well Cheers
Very nice work mister
@@RustyInventions-wz6ir 👍 Thanks
hi Norman can you take some footage of when you are drilling and reaming the little taper pins?
@@steam_fan Hi mate, I’ve actually already done it. I think I got a small amount of footage that’s going to be in an up and coming video but didn’t go to in depth in it. When we do the next batch I can. 👍
Nice work👏
Thank you! Cheers!
I have not seen a tool like that before, Worked out well. You may what to see about case hardening the pins, that could be done on the ends.👍
@@Randysshop It’s a bloody good old tool 👍
Hay Norm, when I use the stone grinding bits with my dremil they ware out quite quickly. Which meant the diameter keeps changing. How are you not having this problem? Thanks
@@Nick-pr5gw Not so much a problem with a change in diameter but we did have some issues with the stone getting clogged/loaded up and pushing it’s self away from the work. We are taking such small cuts the stones don’t wear that quickly.
Gosh! So really just because you’re making such a small cut this is avoiding wear on the stone. Still amazed that you can get the precision you are aiming for on this one. Thanks for coming back to me.
How old is that DC grinding spindle?
@@douro20 I’m not sure. It’s on loan from a local engineering firm

A ticklish job there, and it will be interesting to see how you get round the pin boring conundrum! Phil Phil whitley, my week this week, on youtube!
Just stumbled across your channel , very nice - subscribed. Fred would be proud 😉 Hey I had a look through the comments there to check this wasn’t already covered , 15/16” is a little less than an inch It is 1/16 less than an inch ( no such sizes really but they may help the thought process …. ) 16/16 is exactly 1” 8/16 would be half an inch Hope this is of some help , also when micing up a part in tho ( .001” ) a lot of imperial mic’s have common fractions written on the frame of the micr to reference. Silly easy examples.500 = 1/2” , .750 = 3/4” these are obviously easily calculated in the head but for more obscure fractions 1 can read them right off the frame of the mic Iv only just found the channel and typing as I’m watching , I’m starting to think this comment is rather below your station please don’t be offended but iv spent time typing it now…
@@petermcneill80 Thanks 🙏 The mics and machines I use are a mix of metric and imperial so the measurements are usually made in what tool I have on hand. If the machine dials are in mm that usually what we work in. Can get a tad confusing at times to follow along. Thanks for watching
Crikey! You can do some damage with that thing when it's restored!

Nice piece of British made machinery. You'll be able to forge some big steam engine parts with that hammer ! Look forward to the restoration series on this.
Looking forward to seeing it going!
good to see it rescued!
I remember it working at the old workshop, Its bloody noisey! Sad he died before it made its way inside the new shed, he was a talented metalworker.
@@julianhawker7672 wow. I was amazed at some of his work really impressive stuff. When did you see it running? I never got to see any of his workshop. I would have been like a pig in the proverbial
@@VintageIronuk 20+ years ago probably, I recall he told me that he had to dig a massive hole and fill it with ready-mix to sit the hammer on as a foundation. It would shake the whole workshop when working! Noise complaints from neighbours (warranted imo) did for its running at the original workshop site. His blacksmith mates disposed of all his kit after his death and I don't believe theres anything much left now.
@@julianhawker7672 Brilliant!! I think I ought to get her going again and give my neighbors a bit of a taste. I can definitely see why this got left behind. Some job getting it out of there.
@@VintageIronuk I see his brother in law to chat to now and then. I will try to remember to ask about the hammer foundation for you, as he was likely involved in the construction.
I saw Ron and stopped for a chat, got plenty of info for you: Its not the hammer that was in the old shop working! ( The blacksmiths had that one when Alan died apparently) Alan Bought the one you have many years ago , possibly not seen working, had it transported it to where you got it from and it never moved again............ The hammer that he did have going was a similar size, it sat on a concrete pad as big as a SWB landrover and 3 foot thick! , it had a thick layer of compacted sand under it to try and dampen the vibration. He had "neighbour issues" at the old workshop at that time due to noise. He also said that it drew a lot of power and a new supply to the shed had to be fitted, despite the electric board saying that the existing supply should have been man enough to run it, when the hammer was going it used to dim the lights. HTH.
that some kit
What a great find
