I Coded the Most Optimal Formula 1 Calendar
Because no one there wants to foot the huge bill for it. The German GP has been on and off since 2007 because F1 was taken over by bad actors CVC in 2007 who raised the prices to a degree too high for anyone there. F1 just isn’t as big a thing there as it is in the UK, France and Italy.
as much as it would be nice to have this all go easy and more efficient, if im being honest id get bored seeing the tracks in the same region, id get very bored with the jeddah-baku stretch and others, its more interesting when region/weather changes
I think you should switch Las Vegas and Mexico City due to customs requirements, then interlagos, then Australia, then japan
Interlagos?
Turns out Las Vegas was an amazing race
Mexican here, you should have gotten into account that the Mexico City Grand Prix is one of the last races, taking place by the end of October because it’s close to día de muertos, the city government works with the organizers of the race to incentivize tourism from foreigners who come watch the race
Formula 1 cannot have so much races per year - It costs too much, and mechanics and even drivers are starting vocing up being unable to correctly balance work, family and life with such a schedule. I think in practice, the pros of rotating some tracks and keeping races at no more twenty per year outweights the cons.
What app for the intro with the traveling do you use?
When we lived in Emmertsgrund on the hills above Heidelberg, you could hear the races at Hockenheim.
Something else to add is the fans. Do you really want to see 2 US GP back to back? Same applies to the numerous EU GPs, are you willing to go to see consecutive GPs in consecutive weeks in EU?
And now to perfect this calendar we skip the first 4 races entirely
Share the code, lets improve it
wouldn't it have been a better idea to calculate between the airports and not the actual tracks? idk if it would make a big difference, but it would make more sense right?
11:13 Suzuka to Singapore is actually 5300 km
9:47 Who else thinks that the elevation into turn 1 at COTA looks like a scene straight out of inception 👀
I would love a 2024 remake
@13:45 /accross/across/. Should I change the name of my account to Grammar Critic?
I think we'll just have to trust your ability to code the shortest path algorithm, because that doesn't seem obviously the shortest paths. Will you be publishing a link to your repo?
I made another optimal route and it was 50,837km i started with australia my vid should be out on my channel
You could start the European season in Imola, and end it in Monza without too much added distance, that way the two races in Italy aren’t too close
In my opinion this idea would make the schedule a lot less exciting since the changes in environment and culture would be much smaller between the races. It just wouldn’t feel as fresh every race
u talk a lot shit
but the video is nice
0:50 you use greedy algorithm? picking the closest point to you at every step doesn't gurantee the shortest route over all
there are better graph route algorithms, even algorithms that work on whatever distances between points you want. you could have a graph with 23 points and every two points connected with an edge, then give each edge a weight equal to the distance on a sphere between the two. finding a minimal path on that graph would give you a shorter circuit
Hi great video, and impressive to work that all out. If they have to return all the equipment to UK every now and then could you not code that into your program? For example could you tell the program to start in the UK. Travel to 3 venues and then return to the UK. This would mimic 3 weekends of back to back racing followed by a break.
the 3 chicanes is gone?
You're forgetting the most important factor IMO... The emissions are not from F1, they're from the planes. The idea is not to travel less, it's to reduce the emissions from the current use of transportation, which is being done and is far more important. Don't you think? 👍
If that’s the best from a sustainability point of view why not simply remove all dictatorships and anti-climate change countries?
So I recently wrote my thesis about the F1 calender and you really need to check weather conditions. With the current arrangement you have, a lot of races would be held either in too hot conditions or too cold. Next thing is 4 middle east races in a row wont work as ramadan will block that plus drivers have been complaining about too hot races there already and this would push this limit further. Another problem is brazil at the end after australia, brazil at the end is no problem as the shortest calender i came up with (~75k km) had brazil as the season finale), but brazil is too far away from australia and brazil couldve easily been included into your america season to reduce the total distance. Now I would love to go on about the most optimal calender (i mean i wrote 60 pages about it), but its easier for me to just show the routes i have made: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1mhBe23UmSHgYUsJ9Ixh9BloZJmMgrfs&usp=sharing Unfortunately the descriptions are in german, so here is a quick info: "angepasst" = Adapted routes either for less distance or better weather conditions in exchange for longer distances. "Early XXX" = A certain continent asia/america makes the first mini season after the initial middle east races Overall the shortest routes are Early Asia and Early America with 75.246,60km and 79.963,40km (this includes team traveling home before and after the season plus all the flights during the summer break) FYI: there are no triple headers, no races above 35 degree celsius or under 18 degree celsius in all of those routes (except the 2024 one).
I just want you to know that I used an AI chatbot to ask about this question and your video was the top resource it used! The AI was perplexity Edit: Using GPT-4o as its LLM
net zero will never be, especially when trying to reduce carbon emissions as much as we are trying to as a planet is not the best thing we could do. trees provide oxygen for us to breathe and by taking away the thing that trees need in exchange we wind up killing our planet faster. we can balance it better absolutely but there is a line in the stone that once crossed we are not coming back
You forget to consider that teams have 3 kits of equipments that travel through the races, the equipment of race 1, go by ship directly to race 4. However, I liked you approach
But shouldn't the flight distance should be considered between airports and not the track itself?
you forgot China
This is on the 2023 season where their was no China
"We are doing to keep Bahrain as the opene- *quits video*
He deserved more time in F2.
Inserting a personal bias at the start is an immediate no go. You haven't thought about it deep enough. You have let out some of the major factors that would be essential to get any tracks to buy in, one occurring with holidays or avoiding holidays. Exercise in purely abstract in the end, more work and greater frustration as you come up against resistance and you feel locked in to your "right" solution. Looking forward to v0.0.2
Nailed it!! Now... What percentage does Norris have of winning the 2024 championship? It could be interesting👀
What's the point of entertainment and sports just stop everything and open temples
The interlagos finish would definitely be optimal for best end race but a trip from las Vegas to Brazil and then finishing in Australia
YESS TO HARSH
You would fly west from USA to Japan not east
Great video but one major flaw, the earth is flat not round so may need to be recalculated using the correct information but is a good concept keep trying!
This is NOT the optimal route. The nearest neighbour algorithm that you use is just a heuristic and doesn't per se provide optimal solutions for the TSP (you're actually not solving a TSP because then you should return to where you start, i.e. Bahrein). In this algorithm, you visit the closest of all locations which you haven't visited, which usually leave you with long routes at the end. In the solution in this video you have to cross the pacific twice. If you choose for Cota, Las Vegas , Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, Japan you save approximately 1500 kilometres.
What is the us states as f1 tracks video you talk about at the beginning? That sounds awesome but I can't find it anywhere
I like the Idea of like Continent Tours, like Orient Tour, European Tour, North America Tour, Asia and Pacific Tour, and South America "Tour"
Suzuka to Singapore is 5.000 Km, not 500 km...
Australia should be always as opener Season Brazil for final race
This is pretty much completely nonsense. It doesn't account for the fact that there are 5 or 6 different logistic "kits". Literally none of the kits goes to more than a handful of races, let alone all races.
Back home between races should be included. And it dictates that there should be more races in or near europe :)
In my opinion, China and Russia should be included, with Australia being the opener then Singapore then to japan, china and russia then to the rest
