Spearfishing with Sharks - Extended version
Full version of our encounters with sharks while spearfishing in New Zealand for kingfish. Bronze Whalers (Bronzy's) have no interest in people - they only target fish. So this isn't as dangerous as it looks. But we are very experienced around sharks... don't try this yourself.

Chasing Wapiti (Elk) in Fiordland, New Zealand. Hunting deer while tramping through native New Zealand bush, climbing from sea level to an almost 1 kilometer high peak with 30 kg packs.

Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. Spear shot on kingy at about 8 meters deep, then the brief fight. It was in a school of drummer fish... swam out in front for me! No sharks this time!

Dived down on a shallow pin, saw a nice kingfish and just as I was about to spear it, saw a big bronze whaler shark below! Decided not to spear the kingy... I'd already lost one to a shark earlier that day...

Coromandel, New Zealand 2017 July. Was spearfishing when this NZ fur seal showed up... super aggressive. Buddies nearby had their flippers nipped by seals the same morning... so the seals weren't being playful.

Question. If you catch a fish that a shark had a go of while reeling it in, how much meat do you discard? Are shark bites on fish a cause of contamination the same way deer meat would be contaminated if wolves or bears got to the carcass before the hunter?
I wouldn’t cut too much away - only the part immediately around the bite.

This mako size is about 3/3.5 meters long, your kingfish was about 1.5 meters long. Mako are smart shark, he was waiting in the deep before attacking your fish. Mako use that tactics often, this species is extremely fast. You are lucky that this kind of fish eat only fish species and not mammals, he prefers to sink his teeth to fish that are in trouble this fish can handle catching human without problem anyway so stay safe and good catch!

That is such a beautiful mako, i can swim in that open water for hours, been diving for such a long time and would spend hours in the water.
A braver man than I. My more experienced buddies told me to get out when a Mako is around. Not that it would deliberately attack you, but might get accidentally bitten.

Not surprised at all... as soon as he speared it I shouted "head to the boat". I knew a shark would show up. It's not common, but not unusual. My recent Great Barrier video has a video of a big bronzie I saw when diving - they are always around.

There are always lots of sharks around. Even around swimming beaches. You would be amazed. We are fortunate in NZ in that our sharks are not mammal feeders. They ignore people.

Hahahah, yeah some interesting people out there. Spearfishing either captivates you or you hate it. It's a bit of a headspin and pretty tough on the body (breath hold and dives to 10-15m). I got closer to a Mako - my buddies told me off about this one... I jumped into the water to video it, but forgot my speargun in case it came at me.
