I just purchased an early 1958 420C. It runs. Needs some TLC. Looking forward to tooling around on my property pushing out briars and brush.

Tip - cutting standing dead trees is very dangerous and should be avoided. I find letting the tree come down on its own is safer and it typically pops the root ball so your not lookining at a stump the next thirty years.

I use the trunk lid off an old volkswagen - also good for hauling big stones, gravel, mixing cement in. Doesn't have to be Volkswagen - just need an upcurve in the front - punch a hole through for the chain. Been using mine for 30+ years and it is still going strong. Btw that is a dangerous tree to whack on. If a junk of dead top comes off you can't get out of the way quick enough. I like a falling bar and favor one side of the back cut to make the tree spin to one side to roll off the other tree.

I’ve owned one identical to yours for a couple decades, used with a portable gas capstan winch, purchased from Nova Jack, a Canadian company that last time I checked was still in business.

Kool you use it as a wood chipper also.

Great felling skills. I wouldn't beat wedges into a tree that punky. I would go more into the lean and figure it out from there safely.

Obscenely overpriced. Use a plastic barrel wrapped into a cone or a grain shovel.

I have this but my chain keeps coming loose and then my debarker hops not sure what more to do to try and fix this anyone have suggestions?

Great video!! I’m restoring a 420 with a holt blade just like yours but it is the angle blade. I was wondering if you could get some measurements and some close up pics of the cylinders for the blade. Ours are missing and I’d like to find something similar. Thanks.

Not sure where I saw one but it was made out of steel plate. It was built like a scoop and a chain through the front, would skid real easy in the winter time. And would save the skid trail from that rutt that always appears.

Use a business card to clean the grit off the points after filing them. Firm paper is needed.

Your battery is weak or you need 2 new battery cables. Remember it is positive ground.

Good information. Food for thought to make your milling life easier; the Woodland Mills log rests/ back stops are very poorly thought out. As you know, they can bite into, and stop, a log you're trying to rotate. Others have mounted ball bearings to the top to reduce the biting. Others have gone an even cheaper route by slipping a length of PVC pipe over the stops when it's time to rotate. Gotta give you credit for milling in the dark. Dave

There's one out there that mounts without the bar, you have to remove the bar, no big deal, and it's much shorter, easier to use and no chain that could be dangerous even if you grind down the chain. It's belt driven. I like this because when a jam happens the belt slips. It also looks like you could drive other homemade gadgets to the belt pulley. It comes with accessories for Stihl & Husqvarna, clutch housing, bolts, washers, extra double sided blades, etc... It worked just as well. I'm going to install two adjustable feet at the bottom, like the ones on snowblower for gravel driveways, to adjust the depth for thick & thin bark. Either one makes the job much easier.

That is not the drain plug. It holds the detent ball for the PTO lever. The drain is a pipe plug like the fill plug.

Had mine a couple of years now. Clearing an acreage with a chainsaw and a winch. Totally indestructible and a must have item. Pulls those logs over a brush pile or thru a cluster of trees with no effort or damage. Best tool you could have, no matter how you do the skidding 😅

Think that's funny tried to help somebody one night at McDonald's that was car trouble the bearings were completely wore out of the water pump they cracked the plastic housing they put JB weld on it to hold it together and didn't understand why It wasn't working

This really helped alot with mine. My dad once welded his up like that and belt is still tight.

And you want to tie down a load in your pick up truck properly by running the strap through the wheel.
