CAST IRON RESTORATION | Can We Make This Old & Rusted Skillet Shine Again?
Просмотров 361 тыс.Год назад
Today, I will be trying to restore an old and rusted cast iron skillet that a friend of mine from work gave me! (Thanks Julieta) To do this yourself, you will need a big tub, some 5% vinegar, water and something to scrub the rust off! Clean it with warm water and soap. After that, it's good to season it (in-depth video coming) and start cooking in it with lots of oil. Please like, share, commen...
CAST IRON UNBOXING & REVIEW | Field #8 10.5 Inch Skillet
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.Год назад
I saw really good reviews on this skillet. A lot even say it's the best cast iron skillet to date. I just HAD to find out! In this video, I give some unboxing impressions and review it. Apologies, this is a long video! Made in America, light weight and an overall great size.. however controlling the heat it puts out requires a bit more monitoring needed than the Stargazer in my previous review!...
CAST IRON UNBOXING & REVIEW | Stargazer 10.5 Inch Skillet

I recently picked up this Stargazer 10.5 inch skillet to review and use daily! In this video, I just give some unboxing impressions as well as a few things I learned during my use. This is considered to be one of the most popular cast iron skillets to date because it is made in America, pre-seasoned to a smooth finish and has a very unique handle. Cruising through the mountains of Devil's Den

My gf and me just really loving the beautiful scenery of Devil's Den and the surroundings mountains of Arkansas
I have the same granite. What do you do with all the lye liquid?Do you take it a special dump for chemicals?
Nice job!
I had an old rusty cast iron pan once. I cleaned it to perfectly new condition by putting in the oven and setting the oven to self-clean. You then just have to season it again.
Hey Guys here is an Amazing Hack for Rust Removal. Food Grade Molasses and Water at about a 10 to 1 . Make sure the Parts are Complete Submerge but is will take about 5 Days. So if you have the time Molasses and Water works Great....
@@bena2293 about how much molasses would you need and does it cost a lot more than like the vinegar
Stop talking so much.
Lard is your friend when seasoning cast iron.
Looks good!
this may be the worst cxast iron cooking ive ever seen.
Nice
@1:52 the what water now?
should have taken the cornbread out of the pan to show no sticking and your treatment worked, or it didn't.
My nephew gave me a rust cast iron skillet like 15 years ago. It was so rusty. The inside was so pity. I took my electric sander and went to town on it. I don’t know how many sand disks I went through. Finally I had it cleaned. I have seasoned it around 15/18 times. It is my go to skillet now. I used no vinger at all. I also have a carbon steel skillet that I have had for 60 years. It was given to me from my sister who had it for 35/40 years. I use it a lot.
Wow! Amazing
just curious, where did you find this BSR & what did you pay for it.?
I love my cast iron skillets!
The best thing about cast iron skillets they'll last for ever .no matter how bad they look the can almost aways be brought back to life
Is it really 100 years old? Is it? Really? Was it MADE to look this rusted by design? Was it?
Looks great
Cast iron would have to be pretty far gone to not be fixable. Acid for rust (citric acid powder is probably nicer than vinegar) and the opposite end of the acidity spectrum to remove bunt-on crusty crap (lye), apparently.
@@cr0ft-2k if I get back into videos again I will try doing your method for citric acid that sounds pretty interesting.
Good way to crack your granite putting a hot skillet on it
super dumb video
Granted the vinegar is weak solution. But for safety put water in first then slowly add vinegar.
Thx u
Good job.
What's the kitty's name ? And is it supervising ? 🤭
@@bulllee3423 hehe that's Pharaoh. He's a good boy. 😺
Great job.
I really never saw you oil the pan?
Thank u for the demo. Youve also got some great comments from other watchers. My specialty is being a word freak. Its sad being this obsessive but I just have to say something about ur pronunciation of the word excess. Excess starts with an e that is pronounced like the e in the word egg, immediately followed by the letter x....ex-cess. It means when theres an amount left over. Access, pronounced like axe-cess, is an incorrect pronunciation of excess. Also, access means when one is given permission to enter something ... for example, the access road running alongside an interstate, permits drivers to enter the interstate. So you wiped off the excess...not the access.
@@amel2784 that is so funny.. I know I messed up that word when I was editing but decided to just let it slide. A year later someone finally comments on it!
@CastIronEric Well, I guess it had to be me..😆. Thanks again
After I removed all the rust from the Dutch oven I was restoring, I rinsed it with water, dried it with a towel, and then dried it in the oven for 10 minutes. It came out of the oven with more rust than it started with. Why?
@@PressurePlusTime because you need to seal it with some type of oil
@@CastIronEric sure but it needs to be dried before it can be oiled. It rusted when I heated it to evaporate the water from rinsing it.
@@PressurePlusTime Flash rust and black iron oxide (magnetite) are the problems I ran into with acid baths to remove heavy coatings of rust on cast iron. So far I have not figured out how to prevent either one.
Where is Devil’s Den, and why do they call it that? Do you know? It’s pretty!
I’ve watched a number of videos about cleaning and re-seasoning cast iron…I liked yours the best. I used this method to clean my skillet, except I put it into a 500 degree oven for one hour. I put it in the oven upside down: after it was in the oven for one hour, I turned the oven off and left it in a while to cool. I did this twice. Was supposed to do three times, but two worked for me. I liked your method of cleaning with half water, half vinegar, plus baking soda! Thanks for the information!
One of the best restoration vids I've seen. I have three that I rescued. I have a sand blaster but something in my gut said not to do that. Getting the vinegar out right now...thanks Eric!
Correct on the sandblaster! My husband just got his first-ever sandblaster set up and got my little #3 Wagner, that had a smooth-as-a-baby's-butt bottom, and did not need anything done - he sandblasted it back to raw iron and brought it in to show me what a great job he did! OMG! And he wasn't wearing gloves and handled it with bare hands. I'm still in the process of seasoning it and hoping I can get that smooth bottom back (yes, I know that won't happen now).
As heavily rusted as that pan is. I think you would ne better off letting it soak for a few days.
@@mikecrabtree8200 from a lot of the other comments, they said the vinegar caused the pitting.
Intro's are boring. Never explain what you are going to do. Just do it and explain as you go.
Always add chemicals to water first.
Flip it over because the real test is when the cornbread slides out without sticking!
Cast iron can warp if you put cold water in a hot pan. Looks like someone probably cooked something and then tried to wash it while it was hot.
@@Boris-Rex yeah she does spin a bit, but I use it in the morning a lot on the weekend for eggs and bacon 🥓😄
It’s warped. It won’t sit flat.
I wish you had flipped that pan of cornbread. You know you’ve got a good seasoning when the cornbread just falls onto the plate. 🍽️
Well done🎉
I just refinished a rusty old Goodwill 8" cast iron skillet with pour spouts on both side of the rim. I used the same plastic tub but dumped in a can of Lye and enough water to cover the pan completely. Stir the lye with a flat stick to dissolve it all, then gently put the pan in the tub. DON'T SPLASH ANY OF THIS ON YOURSELF OR YOUR CLOTHES. Lye is caustic soda and is corrosive. Make this mixture outside in open air. You do not want these odors or fumes in the house. Soak overnight or longer. Remove and rinse with lots of clear water, usually from your garden hose. Heat to dry completely and do the seasoning process. Lye is sold as a drain opener. You can dispose by pouring it down drains a little at a time. I advise you to wear rubber gloves when handling this. Be careful.
I always scrub away my rust but I haven’t had one that rusty yet
You should avoid putting hot pans on your stone surface your stone can take it but the Finnish can burn and scorch msrk
That’s a airless fryer
OK I just found this identical pan in my barn and it is in much worse condition 🙃 well I'm gonna try the vinegar but I have little faith..... researching now if and old fish tank and car battery is enough for electrolysis!?!? Thanks for the video!

good guide, thanks
I watched a lady restore cast iron, and she used Lye to soak the pan. This one might have taken 24-48 hours to soak in the Lye. She DID say, place the water in the bucket first, then the lye. Then clean the way you did. It worked GREAT.
Great video. I have a skillet and dutch oven that has a litter rust. So this looks like a good way to clean them.
Beautiful old pan you restored. Your grandchildren’s grandchildren will thank you for that heirloom.
