Sailing Te Tāiko
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 6 мар 2021
We’re Adam and Vicki. After spending 3 years sailing within New Zealand & preparing for offshore sailing, we sailed our 40 ft sailboat Te Tāiko from New Zealand to Fiji & enjoyed the beauty and tranquility Fiji has to offer. We've now said goodbye to Fiji and have completed our first ocean passage (bluewater crossing) as a couple (only the two of us aboard). We have continued to sail west to our next destination, the beautiful country of Vanuatu.
If you’d like to join our journey, please support our channel by clicking the subscribe button and leaving us a comment. A big thank you to you for watching and a massive thank you to our Patreons for your support and helping make this possible.
In December 2021 we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. We release a new video every Sunday.

Walking a half marathon to eat a marmite sandwich
In this week’s video we need to have our car serviced. Since it is an all day affair, we take the opportunity to make the most of the day, and in true cruiser fashion, go for a walk from the centre of Hastings to Te Mata Peak on the outskirts of Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay New Zealand to enjoy a scenic lookout to have our marmite sandwich. Let us know if you think the walk was worth it. A long walk requires a longer video.
Adam also has a long history with the Te Mata Peak starting from when he was a kid and used to do a lot of mountain biking along the tracks. It's also where he used to paraglide and has been involved in advising on restoration. If you're interested in a video he did wher...

We hope you enjoy it! Welcome back! If you’re new here, let’s recap…a lot’s happened. We’re Adam & Vicki who sailed our 40 ft sailboat from New Zealand to Fiji with the help of our friends Garth & Elizabeth and then set sail just the two of us from Fiji to Vanuatu and then New Caledonia. Our original plan was to end the cruising season in Australia, but after spending a few weeks in New Caledon...

Decision making is continuous. Decisions can be simple such as deciding what to order from a menu. But sometimes they can be more complex. Their consequences and their effects can vary from minimal impact to your daily life, to having major impacts, or sometimes their consequences or effects can be outside of your control. At the start of our sailing journey, the decisions we had to make were r...

Getting ourselves, boat and equipment ready to depart Vanuatu: Passage preparation

In this video we share with you some of the things we do when we prepare to go offshore. There's always a lot to do and not having access to a car often makes the simplest tasks a bit more challenging (for example, buying groceries). Although at times there seems to be a never ending list to get through, it's always worth it knowing that we have done all we can to make our little floating home ...

Well done. I enjoy your sense of humour. Have you had a scone at Peak House? Highly recommend.
Hello and thanks for watching and commenting! We haven’t tried one of those scones but will have to try one before we leave! All the best. Vicki and Adam
Like the bread and also i'm a crust eater as well. Egg sandwich would have been better, Haha. What a good walk you two.
Thank you! Awe yeah egg sandwich! Maybe something for a future episode - different fillings for different destinations 😆 Another big walk planned this week and the weather is looking good for it!
Yay I'm first. I was about 45+ years farming, and exposed to all the sun and rain you could get. No sun protection, full stop. Just a hat.Nothing happened. However, earlier, from the age of 1-9 or 10...I lived in a Bay where the beach was 5 minutes walk away. I used to get sunburn quite badly. The sunburn was treated, but not the protection from it. Still nothing developed. Years later at 50 or so I started getting bits of things on my skin. The oncologist after treatment, said, "don't worry. We're all going to get this." At the time, I belonged to a Naturist Club. So thought I'd have to give up my lifestyle. He went on to say..."if you were ever sunburned as a kid, things start showing up later on in life. Not straight away. But if you have been sunburnt, as a kid, any protection now, won't prevent, early childhood burns, it will just give you peace of mind." End of quote. Allegedly, there is 30% magnification of uv rays in snow and about salt water. So I was told. Marmite is best as a hot milk drink. I think. 👍 Thanks for sharing again. Loving your channel.
Thanks Bryan! Glad to have you back. We’ll cover up as much as we can manage now and hope for the best as we both had sun damage as youngsters. Interesting comments from your oncologist. We had a skin specialist describe how much sunscreen is intended to meet the marketed protection specs and I think most people will be under applying. Vast amounts required and easier to cover up unless of course you’re heading off to the Club for the afternoon 😅. Also interesting how the specialists can see skin damage on what to the naked eye looks pretty normal skin condition. Thanks so much for following and commenting!
How long are you in Wellington for!? I'm in Eastbourne. So close
Unfortunately our visit to welly was brief and we are further north now. But thanks for messaging!
Awesome you guys are home for a bit. Hope to catch up soon! Fingers crossed we can get some fishing in also Adam.
It’s great to be back for a visit and will make contact re fishing with you!
it must have been quite the culture shock being home
Yes, it was! Adam was a little overwhelmed by all the shops and the options. It was really nice being able to access some of old favourites again.
Curious as to what work would be available and worthwhile for a short time period at this time of the year. Are you working in the fruit pack houses. What was the price difference compared to flying?
Adam is a consulting ecologist so coming home provides an opportunity to do site work and reconnect with clients etc. The coach was way cheaper than flying. Per person the coach $85. Flying was $780 for two
It's always great to return home, hope to catch up in the future. Regards, Larry. Tomoduchi.
Hi Larry, great hearing from you thank you. Hope all’s well on your side. See you later! Cheers Adam and Vicki
I've got plenty of good sailing mates in Noumea. If you need someone to pop in and keep an eye on the boat, sing out!
Thanks very much!
Magnificent!
It was amazing.
A very interesting video, shows a sailing life is all about making decisions all the time, some big and some small, and being flexible. Cant wait to catch up again.
Thank you for commenting and look forward to catching up again soon!
The New Caledonia flag is the French one blue white red because it is French
Thank you. Yes, we now know that and have since changed it. At the time we bought the flag, it’s what the chandleries were selling which aligned with what the internet said was the New Caledonian flag. Thanks for your comment and pointing it out.
Hi guys, when was this filmed? We are looking at heading in and out of the pacific and would love to know if New Cal is open for cruisers again after the unrest. Thanks in advance, Dame.
Hi Dame, we entered Noumea earlier this month and haven’t seen anything concerning. Lots of friendly cruisers around the marina. Hope this helps.
Amazing video guys!! Loved it. Thank you.xx
Thank you Charlotte!
Love Noumea have done a lot of sailing there. Just be weary of sharks. Noumea has Bull & and tiger shark's. Talk to the locals is the best bet.
Thanks very much for your comment. We have heard the same thing. Good idea getting local knowledge. All the best. Adam and Vicki
@sailingtetaiko I heard the snakes are venomous, but they have tiny mouths and would be unlikely to land a bite. Definitely check the dingy each time.. They give me a fright every time! Great boat, the Chico 40. Loves having the Genoa outboard sheet off the toe rail on a snatch block once the wind gets more than 50 degrees true wind angle
We are very appreciative of the upwind ability of the Chico 40.
Hey Vicki, that wash you experienced, was what we had in the sounds everytime a ferry went past. Back in the mid 90s when I had my first phone. We couldn't take photos, not even text, so have no proof. But it's true. I thought we were going to have a super close up of you having the cake. You know the one with the real cream. I mean real cream. Thanks for sharing folks. Great editing too. Cheers from down here.
Hi Bryan, the ferries sure can create a wash that sometimes makes you feel like you’re back at sea! When we sailed into the Nananu passage in Fiji, the wind had picked up to 18 knots and there was quite a wind chop in the pass. To add to the excitement, there were no channel markers as Navionics had indicated there would be. Next minute, an inter-island passenger ferry overtook us in the passage and left quite a wake for us to go through. The passengers seemed quite amused by the situation and were filming us as they went past 😂we didn’t film it either but it did happen and at least we could now follow the ferry through the channel. Real cream is a must on a sweet treat. None of this fake stuff otherwise Adam would have had it all to himself 😀thanks for watching and commenting, Vicki
Fancy having a stow away. Signal Island is a beautiful place.
It sure is a beautiful place.
Mmmm a lot of bubble corrosion around your gooseneck , ??
Yes, we have a lot of paint bubbles on the mast.
Video far from boring thankyou for adding this episode this is another place I'm looking forward to getting to
Thank you Matt. Definitely recommend Whangaroa. Lanes Cove is so tucked away it feels like a long stay anchorage for sure. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I'm a bit late with this comment. I've been in and out of signal. Grrrr.!! First world problem. Haha.! Hey after Australia, there's a ton of Pacific Islands to see. One I'd love to visit, Suwarrow Atoll, where Timaru man, Tom Neale spent a few years....would be on my list, plus Pitcairn Island, plus Easter Island. Why.? Because they're there. 😂 Looking forward to seeing you check out New Caledonia. Thanks for sharing. All the very best.
We agree completely there are so many places in the pacific to see. We have really been thinking about this recently so that we aren’t rushing on and missing desirable locations unnecessarily. We share our plans soon. Cheers, Adam and Vicki
Should be aiming for the FAD's Adam... dragging a lure behind you haha... nothing like a night time bill fish to keep you going. Great vid guy enjoy Noumea
You got me there Andy :D need to flip the priorities around in favour of fishing. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers, Adam
Your video got us wondering; some googling teaches us that you can roast and then freeze most vegetables. Do you think that these would have been allowed through? Seeing that they are no longer "fresh" but now cooked? Thanks for sharing you wonderful adventure.
It was a question we asked but we never took it further. What did you find out?
Wow, Brings back memories.
Good to hear :)
I am from Vanuatu in port-vila 🎉❤😊
Awesome. We loved it there.
Vicki thank you for sharing. It was really interesting to hear what you had to say on trust. We are very very early in our sailing journey and I have to build that trust and remember that it’s so important. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching and commenting on the episode. I’m pleased to hear the message regarding trust resounds with you in your journey. It’s certainly something we’ve had to learn and accept that there are different roles/responsibilities on boats. We wish you all the best with your sailing adventure and we hope you have the most amazing experiences. We may see you out there somewhere one day. Thanks for always taking the time to comment too. Cheers, Vicki
Hey Vicki, I just read your online intro to yourselves and the boat naming. "Te Táiko" you can't go wrong. Loving your channel. Two people with no pretences. Thank you again for sharing. Awesome episode. All the very best from down here in Aotearoa.
Hi Bryan. Thank you so much for your comment. Great that you found our website and thank you for taking the time to look through it. We’re really happy with the name. Was quite memorable as we were sailing out of NZ there were lots of Tāiko’s flying around us. We haven’t quite managed to get out to Great Barrier to volunteer with the Tāiko chick survey, but will get there one day. Thanks again for watching and always nice to hear from you. Vicki
@@sailingtetaiko if it's any consolation to you,; when I was doing possums for DoC in the Sounds, I missed out on a chance to do tree planting on Stephen's Island, yes of Tuatara fame. But wait there's more. Also missed out on a chance of going in the deep south, to count and weigh and band Albatross chicks. From memory, I think it was Campbell Island.? I don't understand. I'm a nice guy. Why me.? Lol. Here comes a violin moment. Thanks for the upload.
We hear you and feel consoled. At least you got to do the possum work 😆 I guess it’s not what happens in life but rather how you deal with it that counts 👌
@@sailingtetaiko I feel better. Back to reality. When do you think you'll get to Oz.?

HI Adam & Vicky, great to meet up with you. Had dinner on dry land tonight, Mahi Mahi and fresh salad. Beats sausages and pies for the last three nights. Tied up Tomadachi and everyone scarpered. Family really liked my haircut as well. Cheers Ian

Good morning folks. By now, I'm guessing, you know we're into daylight saving time, down here. Hey just a heads-up, back when I was a liveaboard, one of the yacht chandleries in Waikawa Bay, I seem to remember had folding trolleys for carting everything. . I used to have a 12mt Hartley Golden Cowrie, and I found I had a few nooks and crannies, where I could stow one of those ordinary red sack trolleys. You know the type with the heavy duty tyres. It was a lot easier in the heat of "our" summers 😅 haha. Would that not be easier for you.? Instead of carrying it all. Also, I found a sail maker with off cuts, reasonably cheap, that i could make a trolley pack, to shove your purchases in, and strapped to the trolley. Much easier in Vanuatu heat doing it that way, than carrying it. Don't go for the cheap and nasty type, like the ones available from the Red Shed. They only last 5 minutes. Hope that suggestion is helpful. For that advice, my fee is pretty high. The smiley face is free. 😂. But seriously, thank you for sharing. Love your channel. Take care.
Great hearing from you and as always thanks for following the channel! We think you might be onto a good idea with the trolley. And we have seen a few in action around the traps. One guy was using one to bring a full diesel jerrycan back from town. Looked effortless compared to carrying. We would need to find right size etc. Watch this space! I looked up the Hartley Golden Cowrie and it looks like a nice design for live-aboard etc. Thanks and hope to hear from you again soon. Cheers Adam
@@sailingtetaiko yep and being a flush decker, it was considered, big volume. With my layout, I could sleep 6 comfortably. But I had a quarter berth, which provided room at a pinch for #7. But the most I had was 5, plus air tanks etc. And spear guns etc. So the quarter berth I used for the sack trolley, and other bits and bobs. Take care.
Love your sailing videos, practical and helpful, enjoying your adventure in Vanuatu, never been there but now on our list - thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you so much for watching and your comment. We were always told never to miss Vanuatu and unfortunately we couldn’t see all that we had wanted to, but it definitely was the highlight for us.
Really enjoyed your video, interesting adventure! And Vicki, you have a lovely smile :) Perfect rope-swing technique, Adam! Keep up the good work guys.

Awesome guys. Would have loved to have seen more volcano footage. Maybe next time.?? Is that the one where you offer young virgins as a sacrifice, to the gods.? Asking for a friend. 😂 Hey remember the nanny state you left behind, called Nz.? You wouldn't get away with riding on the back of a truck back home. Now.!! However, when I was young, you could. How times have changed. Anyway guys, thanks again for sharing. Great editing too. All the best from down here.
Being on the crater rim of Mt Yasur, especially in the dark when the crater is glowing and the molten rock plus ash is flying around, makes for a pretty powerful experience. I think it commands a lot of respect! The lack of regulation is in many ways a breath of fresh air. Nice to see people being left to make their own decisions. On Tanna everyone has a machete in hand and even young kids have their own. Kind of like having a mobile phone in kiwiland. Apologies for all the wind noise in the videos we have been having camera issues but we’re getting there! Cheers, Adam and Vicki
@@sailingtetaiko didn't notice wind noise mate. All good my end. Take care.
