STEREO BUS COMPRESSION WITH API 2500
Maybe one of the best Bus Compressors of all time? The API 2500 Bus Compressor has been a staple anywhere music has been mixed or recorded. In this episode of Gear Reviews with Phil Choi I’m reviewing what makes this compressor unique, how it might hold up with some other legendary bus compressors, and a very special modification you can make to the API 2500. This Mod has been around for some time and has even been recommended by the Inventor of the API 2500 himself, Paul Wolff.
Bus Compression can be slightly confusing and in this video I break down how bus compression can be used on drums, your whole band, and the final mix.

We can't say enough how much this video means to us. As a company that focuses more on the conversion side of an audio interface, it's nice to hear people appreciate the work that goes into that. We understand everyone is going to have different tastes when it comes to interfaces, but we have always strived to have a clean sound but also musical in a way. Thanks, Phil and happy mixing 🙌

Original design had 4VCA Yours had only 3 and some parts missing inside so it's not sounds like original at all Mine for example is 100% original, there is the difference in the sound Yours sounds thinner with less mojo After I put to interesting people missing parts back they had the same opinion
I should have clarified that the Cap mod is really for the units that have 3 VCA’s where an extra cap was inserted and the 4th VCA is missing. The mod for these units is to sound closer to the original unit with the caps removed than with the caps still in the unit. The 4 VCA units are more desirable since they have that extra VCA but the mod is for people who don’t have that unit.
And by the way This is no modification Modification is something when you understand how circuit works Pulling out that 2 caps for making Voltage Control Amplifier section work different is not modification Modification is something deeper Second thing, the unit was factory calibrated after PCB was completed, yes, with that 2 caps in, and after you pull those out you lost delicate calibration in everything, VU meters, GR metering, stereo image, voltages between link channels etc It's funny how people after watching some YT channels doing the same stupid things without knowing what they are doing, without the basic knowledge And then when 2520 op amps start to blows they wonder -"oh my GOD, why ???" "Until I had the internet I din't realize how people are stupid" (Stanisław Lem) 😂

For those who can’t afford the 25s, what other 3-way monitors could you recommend?
I would check out the Barefoot Sound Footprint03 monitors! Barefoot speakers sound great and these are in a really good price range for 3 way speakers.
@@_philchoi Is there anything around the 4-5k price point that is worth getting over the barefoots? (Neumann KH 310, Genelec 8331, HEDD Type 20, Eve SC3070) Thanks.
@ If your budget is 4-5K the options open up more and I think there are better speakers you can get. The Genelec 8331’s are a good option for the price range but also think worth considering is the barefoot micromain 35’s or used micromain 45’s. If you’re able to go to a store like vintage king or any place you can hear and test out the speakers it will completely be worth your time. When choosing my ATC’s that’s what I did and i remember really liking the barefoots too which is why I think they’re worth looking into but everyone is different and you should see if you can listen to the speakers before you decide!
NICE VIDEO
Good video. You can build a better version yourself or with the help of a cabinet maker using Fostex, mark audio, or other more insightful single drivers

Hi! Do you use ATC 25 monitors in your studio? How do they perform in your space? I'm considering them for a 172 square foot room with an 8.5 foot ceiling and planning to add acoustic treatment. Do you think they would work well in this kind of environment?
172 square foot room will work! Acoustic treatment will be important and I would say especially on the ceiling since your ceiling to floor is the shortest dimension
@@_philchoi Thank you so much! I was initially considering ATC 45, but realized they might be too big for my room. What kind of treatment would you recommend for the ceiling? Should I install a cloud above the listening position or something more comprehensive?
@@kanstprod2575 The 25’s have a lot of power and so I think those will be a nice addition to the size of your studio! Yes, i would try acoustic clouds over your mix position and leave an air gap. I’ve been using the GIK cloud brackets above my mix position and it really helped. even though cloud brackets are a bit tougher to install they’re worth it! I have another video on my channel that goes over the treatment i setup if you want to get an idea it’s called studio acoustic panel placement

Get a Tablet and connect it to your computer and put something like izotope Insight, WAY better RTA Visuals than the Clarity that is all crunched up,
I just took a look since i had never heard about this, this looks awesome! I like the interface and how it’s laid out, i’ll have to check it out thanks for the rec
@@_philchoi it is cheaper cooler and better than clarity, let me know
This is a great room correction tool. If you get one, replace the internal battery. It's very easy to do.
Good to know! I hear these units tend to need the batteries replaced
Fuck yeah, just got one… haha it’s not really that exciting of a pedal, but the subtlety is pretty cool.
Yeah it’s a great pedal for leveling out your guitar sound and it’s not a bad price either!
@@_philchoi definitely. Just picked one up used for $50. Mint condition though. Going to figure out where and when I need it, seems to be more of a detail type pedal, which is cool, and necessary. Also, I know John Frusciante used this one on the intro to “under the bridge”, which I would never have thought about, but now that I know, I can totally hear it.
@@bobbythompson4268 while im not super into country, a lot of finger picking tele country players use the dyna comp too and you can really notice how it evens out the level of higher string with the lower strings on the guitar. so many players use the pedal, definitely a classic for a reason!
@@_philchoi yeah I’ve been using it non stop the past few days. It’s awesome!
Maybe I'm missing something but can't a plugin do this?
Yup! Whether you have an RTA plugin or hardware RTA they’ll both work it’s just a workflow preference if you prefer to work more ITB or OTB.
This Behringer RTA is a fine piece of equipment. I use it all the time along with my Dorrough 40-A. Since I've started to use it, never had translation problems at all!!! It's great right out of the box, but it's even more useful when you apply to it an isophonic curve so the graph matches your ears better! Nice job!
@@JaviBello Love that!! I like this RTA it does exactly what i need and completely agree that it helps with translation. I mix FOH every once in a while and it’s nice to know that i have a dedicated RTA i can patch up quickly. Thanks for taking the time to comment and for watching!!
@@_philchoi Thank you for sharing this, some people starting out nowadays needs videos like this! vst's are nice tools I wish I had a few years ago, but physical gear like this are far way better in response, and also you don't have to switch windows, just look at it at every time!
Thanks so much for the positive energy it is so appreciated you have no idea! 🙏🏻 My goal is to create a space here on this channel where people can support one another in the audio journey since we’re all learning and we all love music. Every time I’ve compared digital plug-ins (eq’s, compressors, preamps, and now an RTA) to their analog hardware counterparts i’ve preferred the Analog hardware 100% of the time because I prefer the workflow so much more. Analog is amazing and feels real and I hope people can experience it for themselves.
@@_philchoi I hope as well!! People hating on comments, never had a clue about what they are talking about, so don’t waste your time caring about it. Good luck!! Subscribed 😁
@@JaviBello 😂😂 you totally get it!! Just subscribed to your channel, congrats on getting past 1k Subscribers i got a long ways heh 😄
Real analyzer is very oprimistic, this paperweighter doesn't have anything to do with the TC Clarity, not the same league at all,
actually Clarity RTA is horrible, is an square instead of a rectangle, way better a good plugin like insight connected to a tablet, way better visual input
Hey! Thanks for the video - I'm considering these ATCs! Mind if I ask what stand you're using here? This layout would be perfect.
Hey glad the video can help! These stands are Sound Anchor ADJ2 monitor stands and they are height adjustable. I have a review of the ADJ2’s on my channel too if that helps thanks for watching!
@@_philchoi Thanks, I found the video. These look wonderful!
I have never ever in my 25 year long career used this
It's a great learning tool to have the visual feedback of seeing the spectrum as you're mixing things. There really aren't many good quality RTAs that I know of, though. I just end up using an extra audio interfaced plugged into an iPad on a lot of outboard stuff. It's nice to be able to dial in the decay and FFT options on an app, but I'd still rather have a pretty dancing hardware spectrum. It's kinda like putting an oscilloscope on a synth. It looks pretty cool, but it also actually teaches you to hear the difference between different waveforms. Sure, you can do all this ITB, but it's a lot more engaging to play with parameters on hardware and see how the waveform changes on a scope and see the harmonics showing up on an RTA.
Totally agree! I think it’s fun to have an RTA since it’s adding a form of visual feedback in addition to what you’re hearing in the room. I’m sure there’s great ITB solutions but I would rather have hardware instead of another plugin window.
Just get good reference monitors and use your ears. This would be useful live for spotting feedback frequencies quicker, but in the studio, your ears should be all you need.
As he mentioned in the video, in a home studio with limited speaker size, you can't use your ears, especially if the small 4" speakers normally can't properly produce frequencies below 80Hz
You can't trust your ears in most real life home studios, and that is when this kind of gear come handy. We all use vumeters and graphs all the time, this is another tool when your ears can't hear the truth!
@@RecordingStudio9 You nailed it, the point of my video is that when you have unideal acoustics and are fighting against substantial room modes having another way to reference your mix helps. Thanks for watching!
@@JaviBello Exactly!! Most people with home studios have to deal with room dimensions that are automatically going to have room modes. I am all for using your ears but when your room is wonky and you’ve done as much room treatment as you can it helps to understand the frequency response of your bounced mix.
@@RecordingStudio9 Yes, but if you can't afford speakers that can cover the entire frequency range, you have little choice but to filter them out to be safe. A trip to a thrift store can likely get at lead a basic subwoofer to add to the monitoring setup. A lot of RUclips videos have the problem of not filtering out problem low frequencies, probably because the editor can't hear them, their videos would be far better if they filter out the lows that their monitoring setup can't hear.

I'm sorry but it's 2024. use anything else than this
i get where you’re coming from, this unit is from 2001 and is super dated but like i was saying in my video there are better options out there like the TC Electronic Clarity M. At $80 how do I not buy an RTA that one of my favorite engineers uses?
@@_philchoi $80 bucks damn
@@_philchoi sure if you're not ITB and it's a vibe
It's a marvellous piece of gear and lots of top engineers still using them. SSL 4k is even more outdated and NOBODY say it's 2024 so let's use anything else 😉
I used one of these in my live sound rack and it was great for finding feedback. Still have it in my huge pile of analog gear I never use anymore.
Do you use room correction like trinnov or dirac with them? I'm thinking of upgrading my kh120ii to scm25a. My room is treated but I got a 10db peak at 140hz which the ma1 systems solves perfectly.
That’s funny you mention that, I was just reading something this week where Chris Coady swore by Trinnov and I’m super curious about trying that out. Definitely open to Room correction but just haven’t had a chance yet to try it with my scm25’s yet. That’s awesome, anything that can handle a 10db peak like that must be a lifesaver. That’s cool that Neumann can offer that
Looking into ATCs for my home studio, curious to know which model you use in your setup; thanks.
Hey! I’ve previously used the passive ATC SCM 12s with bryston 4b power amps which sounded amazing. Currently am using the ATC SCM25A’s (mk 1) which are powered. The 25s are by far my favorite, they’re a great 3 way speaker. I also use sound anchors to hold my atc scm25’s.

@@AnalogFlava Thought these preamps are more for microphones, not for line levels. The JV1080 will sound the same through a Behringer mixer.
Do you like to do the eq with the curve bender and the bax before or after the ssl bus comp ?
i’ve tried the combination a couple of different of ways and my favorite is C2/SSL Comp -> Curve Bender -> BAX. The Compressor first for 1-2 dB of compression, the Curve Bender for mostly the tone of the transformers and very subtle mid range boost and then the bax for broad low end and high end shaping.
Symphony is way better than UA
This is such a great synth really.
It really is, for a synth that covers this much ground you’d think it’d be so much more expensive
@@_philchoi I think people go more for the JD990 and then the JV2080 due to screen size. But I don't find the JV1080 hard to figure out. You midi map a lot of what you need access to easily in any case.
How does the tightening mechanism work?
there’s one big allen bolt on the back of the sound anchor that tightens the platform to whatever height you want to set it to. At first I was a bit surprised that there was only 1 bolt holding the speaker up but it’s extremely heavy duty and doesn’t move.
well shit now I want one. thank you :)

aw dang now i’m gonna have to buy them! did you notice anything in particular with the coasters?

of course, glad you enjoyed it!
could you describe with words how this song sounds like on these? especially the beautiful crescendo…
Hearing this song in front to the ATC’s I would describe it as punchy, incredibly balanced, and very wide especially with all of the hard panned left and right sounds that are happening in the song. My favorite part of the song is the drums because it just feels so full and it has a lot of excitement.
How do you like it paired with the curve bender? I have one and was looking for a finishing EQ for the bass and some top frequencies. I was looking at this or the maag (or even the hammer), and wasn't sure if you had thoughts after the fact
Great question! I was actually going to get the maag eq specifically to use after the curve bender for the exact reason you’re mentioning. I went for the Bax instead because i wanted HPF and LPFs in my finishing eq and wanted high and low shelf eqs instead of bands. The maag has mostly band filters at fixed frequencies (except for the high shelf air band) and i liked that the bax had more frequency options just felt a bit more flexible. both eq’s are really amazing especially with minimal phase shifting which is why my bax stays on my mix bus right after the cb. I really like the bax on mix bus, drums bus, keys bus. never had experience with the hammer but it seems like a great option for 3 band eq too!
Love mine. A hidden gem
Right?? it’s so underrated and might be the best bang for your buck for a wide range of synth sounds. Keeping mine
