John didn't call him Adolph? I always read these were insane sessions. Afterwards Phil turned into Pee Wee Herman...before Pee Wee was as high as a vodka bottle(Smirnoff btw used to sell a 1 gallon version which was 20 inches tall with dispenser and like 4 inches wide. source ebay)and decided he was going to take the master tapes. I heard the gun story before and some other stories about Spector and surprise surprise they were major red flags.

@@alldayvinyl You too! And PS: I listened to Bitches Brew, and I heard it in a totally new way! I focused in on Harvey's bass, which I never did before. And I can see why he didn't want to play with him afterwards! He basically just literally hits two notes over and over, while everyone else goes bananas. He'd be bored stiff doing that night after night. It made me understand the album in a completely new way, so.......very consequential, this interview was!!!!! Keep up the fantastic work!!!!

For years I would listen to Dwight Yoakam's records with Pete Anderson on lead guitar and marvel at Pete's talent. I just kept hearing something unique and different in Pete's guitar sound and I couldn't put words to it. During these years we saw Dwight in concert three times and there was Pete creating that same sound. I don't play any instruments and I don't read sheet music. But, finally after years of listening and thought I came to a realization. Pete can play really beautiful melodic music but with individually gnarly, grungy notes! Ugly notes, if you will. How does one do that? String together all these rough edged notes to form beautiful passages? I suppose other guitar players can do this, but they don't sound like the great Pete Anderson. Just amazing.

Saw The Meat Puppets in Columbia, MO at the "original" Blue Note. It was not a very large crowd but not small either. It may be one of the most surreal shows that I've witnessed. They almost seemed possessed by animal spirits: rock and trance. Started listening to them with their first album, musically very different from what they evolved into. But there were hints. It was a fun era, discovering new sounds completely alien to mainstream sound. Just the name "Meat Puppets" hints at a spirit of psychedelic profundity. Followed them for years and even advocated for them persistently with some rock and punk purist naysayers. I enjoyed following their journey. As a deejay on KOPN they were a go to on the weekly rotation of our unconventional late night aural soundscape.

The only reason they got signed is because they were friends with Cobain. I remember seeing them open for Stone Temple Pilots & everyone was bored until they played their ONE HIT from MTV. I’m happy to give credit were it’s due, but personally I wasn’t impressed with theses guys (certainly not the songwriting). They should have gotten Kurt to write them a song.

They weren't friends with Cobain. They didn't know each other until the MTV thing. K.C. was a fan. They were making records long before and after Nirvana. Of course, a bunch of STP fans aren't going to get what the Pups were about. I've gotten to see then 14 times, not nearly enough.

Songwriting? The MEAT PUPPETS made some of the most beautiful, original songs in the American indie scene. An album like "Mirage" is so great that you can't possibly compare it to S.T.P. or anything else for that matter. The album that they are talking about here has alot of good stuff as well. Just take the track "Sam" and the songwriting is way beyond anything in popular music today.

Gordon's story is heartbreaking. I had a friend I grew up with. His name was Ryan. We played ball together, formed a band together, even went to the same university so we could play our music and hang . We partied a lot , as you sometimes do in college and I began to notice that he would act , as I describe now in hindsight, kinda paranoid. When he took drugs or drank he would think people were either making fun of him or talking shit about him . I chalked it up to a bad reaction to the substances. After 2 yrs of college he suddenly quit and joined the USAF. I was surprised but I figured he would do well in the military because he was extremely intelligent and talented. About six months after he joined he was stationed in Washington State and he started sending letters that were strange, talking about conspiracies and people wanting to do him harm. Then one day he showed up out of the blue looking very disheveled and acting very unusual. He told me he AWOL and that he needed to go to Turkey to clear up some kind of trouble or he'd otherwise be in danger. It didn't make sense to me at all and I was very worried. His brother called me asking if I'd seen him and I lied and said I hadn't because Ryan asked me to. After a few days he just disappeared and the next time I heard from him he was acting like his old self but he said he'd been diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic and had received a medical discharge from the military. I went down to Kentucky where he was living with his mother and visited him and he said he was afraid he was going to die because he was addicted to alcohol and had been told not to drink it with his medication. I tried to get him to stop drinking but he instead kept stopping his meds and getting sick again. Then about a year later I got a call from his brother telling me Ryan had died in a mental facility from drinking liquor he'd somehow smuggled in while he was being given strong medication to control his delusions. It was a shock to me how he'd gone from this brilliant young man who could play seven instruments like an expert and get excellent grades effortlessly to being completely at the mercy of his condition and his addiction within just a couple years. Dead at 23 years old. I wish I'd been able to understand his illness more and I wish I could have helped him . I think about him a lot and every time I hear or read the word schizophrenia I think of Ryan and I wish things had been better for him

I think Matt did an awesome job. Incredible albums, all of the songs sound great. Except for my world and since i don't have you. Besides that he was just a more complete drummer and probably better than adler at that. The fact is that it's Axl's band. izzy had to find out the hard way I guess. adler must of messed up with axl. slash and duff don't know better than Axl. And matt wasn't the only drummer around. It's a dog eat dog business. What can you say. Maybe they all find out in their own way that Axl is not one to take lightly. Axl doesn't need them. Axl seems nice enough to provide them the opportunity and they probably took that for granted. Can't they do better without Him. Obviously not from what is seen. Now He has certain members who have not gotten on His bad side I see. slash and duff would know that Axl don't play. What can matt say? He did great as a drummer who knows what personal issues there are but life carries on. Axl no different from His serfs needs Trump's Almighty hand more than ever. Music can't save them. JESUS can. Worry about that. Matt is right, none of them are dead. GOD must be looking over them. Kill those who are not doing as Trump expects in your industry. That's all there is to do. MAGA
