This is a walkthrough of the TPS-L2. I compare it to other TPS-L2 models, show off the features and talk about the history.
Keep the wooden insert as safe as the machine.
how did you solve the last problem? i have the same problem. can't find any information
How do you fix the reverse the tape comes out flips but does not go back in?
Good video, but I have the same issue with heads not lowering and unfortunately forcing them down once or even multiple times didn't correct the issue. Do you know what the root issue is and how to fix it?
I bought one of these in 1982 when I was at the Royal Air Force Technical Training School at RAF Cosford. Had it for many years - it's a great system.
That brings back fond memories. I was in High School, 1980's, worked a lot, didn't buy much; saw the JVC PC-5 at JC Penney's for $200.00 and had to have it. Didn't have the case though, that would have been convenient. I rode around Southern California, Orange County, on my skateboard at a lean 146lbs., with that on my shoulder, blasting out Van Halen, Scorpions, Judas Priest and the like. When I detached the speakers, I could separate the components and slip them into my locker, then put the speakers on top. That locker grew in popularity. Eventually, my brother and a friend of his stole it to buy drugs just before I entered the Navy. Thanks for the memory trip.
Nice, that the effect strength on max is extreme. On the Sansui RA-500 the effect is so small, I can only certainly spot with Eminem.
Send me this device to Russia. I will be grateful.
Still have mine, had the belts all replaced 10 yrs ago. This replaced my NAD tape deck in late 80's. Sounds great still.😃
Fantastic that a young person already has so much technical experience! Keep up the good work
Very cool unit, these are rare
You got a peace of gold man....
great to see you're into retro repairs at such a young age, I enjoyed the video and hope you do many more
Sounds like whatever track that controls the flip mode needs to be lubed, maybe petroleum jelly or light grease can help.
YO LO TENGO Y LE PUSE OTRAS JVC Y SUENA SUPER BIEN
Very nice! Great condition & price! Very informative video too. I've always marveled over the spinning cassette over the revolving tape head that will go out of alignment. Also, I still desire one of these Nak cassette decks. Lucky you. Enjoy!
These old machines are built like tanks. I'm happy to see younger generations appreciating old tech.
I'm looking for this unit in perfect conditions
Nice. Reminds me of myself about 40 years ago! These decks are incredible works of engineering.
I envy you that original box! Even having original seals, nice. It is pain to source any spare parts for this deck nowadays. I was waiting for original 600II user manual on ebay for 6 years to appear!
What kind of nonsense is this? An like 12 years old "repairing" a Nak? Sorry, can't take this seriously.
Excellent job @retro kid!
MY GOODNESS $275?! GEEZE THAT AIN'T WORTH IT!!!
AND A YEAR AGO?! EVEN WORSE!!! YIKES!!!
thanks so much i had the same issue you had towards the end of the video with the door not aligning itself correctly and this helped me fix it in a blink of an eye ! congrats and keep up the good ! work ^^ just ordererd that idle well thingy next step is going to be fiting it in !
try to find some SB-F3 speakers from technics and you´ll be amazed by the sound it releases,it´s a early 80´s (if memory doesn´t fail me) the 79 model ,the others are not the same but the 80´s SB-F2 as doble impedance , you can conect them as a 4 Ohms speakers or 8 Ohms speakers ,it handles 90 watts but only releases 60 watts of sound which is loud and very clean(as an example i have a pioneer receiver with only 17 watts per channel but when conecting some CS-997 with 190 watts it makes the woofer (30 cm´s one) vibrate as hell with loudness on so it can sound more close to the band playing not a steril version of the sound recorded with a 90´s reference amplifier sound also it delivers a nice bass sound but no matter what you do having 70 watts per channel it will never make the woofer vibrate , but with the changes from the 70´s to the 80´s ,if conected to a amp till 79 it´s a set of perfect speakers(the SB-F3) if after 1980 it gives good sound but not as good as if conected to a 70´s amplifier . in 1980 all brands changed the quality of their equipment for the worse ,maybe to make them afordable to more people , basically it´s a surround first system controler with 4 speakers conected but one can use it as a booster for higher low and high frequency´s, so if you conect it to a 79 receiver or integrated amplifier you´ll notice a big diference in sound ,use the tone controls and loudness to meet what you think it is a good sound, the use of flat sound will take a lot of quality of sound from any amp., it´s true a good sound is considered perfect if not using any control of frequencies but those amplifiers and speakers cost a lot of money ,if using a simple integrated amplifier to meet the original sound in the recording one has to use the loudness if hearing to a low volume of sound ,normally till the midle of the volume knob scale ,it brings up both ends of the spectrum of frequencies that normally are only heard when the volume is high
Well done son! Wanna fix my 505? :P
this deck i just bought one because either than a pioneer deck from the 70´s ,this was the best system and at the same time a funny auto-reverse. I tested it in a life-style ehxibition ,where there were only top brands of everything, in the hi-fi section there it was one of thee decks the 505 for one to try it ,in the AKAI area they gave us tyoe I cassettes ,i recorded a few seconds than made it take out and in the cassette several times to see if it worked with perfection ,and it did
Good presentation. However your voice is too soft. Higher volume needed, Mr. Audiophhile.
Muy buena explicación. Justo pienso comprarle uno a un amigo.
panPot = panametric potentiometer.
Do you have the user manual???
Got one but video volume too low...
Got mine several years ago. Cost around 800.000 italian lires in 1980! (how much in today us dollars?)
😘 my first hi end deck
New subscriber, great video. I've got one of these that I use in my home studio for the dimension sound effect (I've got a few old hi-fi spatial things - keep your eye out for a Hughes AK-100). Sending a synthesizer to it from a mixer and back sounds rad. The eq is pretty good too.
Are you selling any of these... That metal case is of interest.
I just got one of these in its original box, with all the pieces in their original boxes. Everything present, cables, handle, everything. Even included a 12v cigarette lighter car adapter brand new in the box as well. I just opened it up last night and was blown away at how nice everything is, and how well it’s built. I need to do some minor repairs to the tape deck and re-foam the speakers, but even with those ailments, it’s a powerhouse. I recently started collecting boomboxes, and this thing blows my beloved Panasonic RX-5150 away in terms of power and fidelity.
wow, original box.. that's rare, congrats - I just picked up one from ebay... it appears that everything stills works, will see soon. :)
Oh my goodness, I had trouble sleeping. I saw your video. My gosh. I am a car guy too. At 5 years of age, drove my parents nuts about cars. I am so sorry for Ken Block's passing. My condolences to his family, and close friends and fans. So glad you have this video of him. Many racing drivers have passed on. I grew up in a generation where they were my true heroes, where then everyone was not so good. Ken did so much for racing, and us, his fans. RIP Ken Block.
da ex possessore di rx.505...quanta nostalgia!
This is great, and has inspired me to pick one of these up to try and fix it. I’ve worked on lots of other Naks, but not one of these. Thanks!
It's really a professional cassette deck. For fixing up the whole deck first you should have refer the service manual. Then the boards. Any way you did it well. For a professional deck like that need some extra care. Like a doctor looking at sick person. But I love to have that deck
Got mine for 5$ the other day!
Wow! That’s a great deal!
@@the_retrokid I know right! Thanks for doing this video I ordered a kit from your link. Are there detailed instructions anywhere you were following?
@reginaldbowls not that I know of, but looking at the service manual is always a good start. You can also try looking at forum posts, which is what helped me.
Immediately subscribed!!
Excellent
Damn thats a cool record player. Nice!
wooow awesome little guy..!
Nice work young man! I picked up a RX 202 and a RX303 to work on for my friends. I also had my Father's RX505 and gave it to a young man to have in his system. More recently I also found a never before installed TD1200 MK2 car player that is the Dragon unit for the car with NAAC same as the Dragon! Keep up the great job reviving these amazing products. I have had Nakamichi's since 1983! All the best!
Are you planning on selling the TD1200 ??? I’ve always wanted one.
I had this unit when I was in the Navy in the 80's. You are correct about the batteries. Carbon batteries back in the day would last maybe 2 hours if you were lucky. With batteries, this thing weighed in at 38 lbs. I would love to find one again. Most awesome BOOM BOX on the market. Even to todays standards.
Awesome :) Thuymbs up!
