DUDE HOLY FUCK thank you thank you thank you. I've been trying to figure out how to get my bass neck straight without a notched straight edge, and those 3 seconds at the beginning literally just ended my search, thank you so much, I know it was unintentional, but god dammit if it wasn't incredibly helpful. I'm subbing just for that simple fact, you are the fuckin MAN
What year is this beautiful SG?
Looks really good though, well done!
Dude, safety first please. My word - that buffer almost slipped and hit your arm.
Did you use fade out thinner?
@@ManhManUtd nice question, back then i didn't know about this kind of products, i haven't tried it...
Thanks for this usefull and pleasant video! I have the HB35+ Lemon Drop myself for 2? years now, did some setting up at the start (no fret leveling). I play it as often as my PRS SE semi SopaBar or my Made In Japan 80s Fernandes Strat clone with bridge HB+Floyd Rose. All bought new at the low end of the price range and very decent instruments. Recently I've added a used (modern) )Danelectro 59XT. Also very decent quality and sound, I might replace it as I am not sure whether I like the very flat fretboard. -About the PUs: they are sold with Roswell PUs and newer ones with the Tesla PUs. For people who are interested to buy, be aware and find out which one you probably would like best. Most seem to like the Roswell best. -You were mentioning considering Fishmans. Did you mean humbuckers or P90s and which would you them consider? I like the Roswells, but I am still curious..And which PUs are in yours now? Also people suggested adding a resistor in the lead that shortens part of the coil to ground for single coil setting to keep more of the volume (like PRS seems to do in some of their SE coil splitts). Would that be a useful suggestion? Or would that change the tone too much? (in a guitar with more accessible electronics I already would have tried myself., but maybe you have some experience ?)
@@cbaten2 mine is still "vanilla" done the set up (after months) but yes, I would swap the Roswells for some Fishman p90s, they are so versatile... As of the resistor trick, it's the first time I am hearing about it, thanks for the suggestion, I might have to check it out!
Great video! How do you normally measure the nut height? Press on the 3rd fret and measure at the 1st or what is your aproach? Cheers!
thannks for the kind words 🙏🙏🙏 A cool tip on this to leave the 3 wounded strings (E, A, D) a bit prouder than the high strings, they will worn the nut much faster anyways and the heavier strings will benefit from been just a bit higher without huge impact in playability since they arent used so much in soloing anyways! cheers!
If is white ?
@@albertorincon3686 white can also be repairable to an almost 98%+ match
any help where I can get one of those routers?
Nice Job! But why didn't you take the electrics off. It would have been only 3 solder joints and would have been a lot less risky! What polish were you using on the nitrocelulose laquer?

@@stavro9565 yes, hehe he is the most adorable coworker!
You got WAY MORE MOXY than i sir. Using a buffing wheel like that while hold the pickguard, while avoiding the already soldiered wiring harness. One slip up and its ER with a side of SG destruction 😂. Beautiful job nevertheless. Well done sir. You earned my sub sir.👍🙏😌
Thank you for a really interesting video. Your English and your lutherie are good. Only thing I didn't see was masking off the pick ups when filing the frets so you don't get microscopic bits of fret metal on them. In my neck of the woods, a set-up is around £60.00 - £70.00 and it's worth doing. Thanks again. Excellent stuff.
Okie Dokie.. I will apologize for using the word "Whining" That I don't but; you obviously find offensive. I retract it and replace it with the word "Complaining" What you are doing to this H.B. guitar is what I've done to/for Gibson's, Fenders and many other brands. And I no longer regard the "High Dollar" as highly superior if superior at all.
Well he clearly did mask them off as you can see @2:01
next video flathead screw driver restoration 8:55 .. btw great job
Nice vid, congrats. I got 2 doubts: How you get access to the input jack and to the toggle switch?
Nicely done. Thanks
Ive called like 3 different guitar repair shops for slmost this exact kind of repair, and all have said they dont or can't do a repair for this. Telling me it would cost 3-400 dollars and it wouldnt be worth it
If the color isn't black or white it can take an awful lot of time to match it and it won't be 100%, it's gonna be 85-95%, not talking candies, pearls, metallics or other special colors... Also this kind of repairs takes really long even though most of the time is waiting time and there are alao back and forths...
@sonicalmods781 yeah, luckily its on the back side and ao not really visible. The advice 2 of them gave me was to get some really thin superglue and spread a little dab on to prevent it from spreading. It's a beautiful schecter telecaster that I got used, so I'm not driving myself crazy over it.
I Randall Haney, Retract this comment fully. I misinterpreted the creators meaning and message to this video, As well as the creator himself. With that I apologize. and retract the following post, .. Thank you for exposing your snobbery. And complaining about things that don't really matter on a budget friendly guitar,
I guess you can judge for yourself if the informations i give are relevant but i wouldn't call it whining, well that's just my opinion! I think the overall impression for the guitar was "go for it" and it was so honest that i ve actually bought the guitar and i am even giging with it! Thanks for your comment!
Randal. I totally disagree and think your comment was uncalled for. I didn't perceive anything like snobbery from him. Nor was there any 'whining' to be heard. Just great advice and a practical demonstration. I've ordered an HB35+ so the vid has helped me a lot to show what I might have to improve.
@@sonicalmods781 Thanks for the reply, Most don't. I have changed "Whining to "complaining" in my post, And apologize if I misunderstood your intent, or the overall message you intend to convey. That's on me. I don't know why/how I misinterpreted your intended message. I will gladly apologize for that; and retract my first comment.
Kalispera. Your English is flawless. Nice backing tracks too. My only experience is with the Harley Benton kits. I have done 4 so far (2 Strats, 1 Tele, 1 SG) and I have been pleasantly surprised. If you know how to work on the fretboard, then you can get these into decent budget instruments. And they are great platforms to experiment as modding platforms.
Done HB kits too, they actually are great!
One of the best restoration videos I watched. I just love it when you reuse all the parts! You have great eye for detail. At some point this beauty will need new frets😉 Those old Mayas are fantastic. Really great built quality (better than Fender in the seventies). This baby is a testament of what we all did in the early eighties: just like Edward Van Halen, we all got a cheap strat, took a chisel and changed the bridge pickup to a humbucker. The guy who did this clearly just had a go at it, butchered the wood, hacked into the pickguard, and got the damn thing rocking. The pole pieces of the humbucker don’t line up to well with strings, but hey who cares for hard rock and metal! Nice upgrades too on the black tuners and the rest of the electronics. All good vintage stuff. Seriously, this is a keeper! I wished it was mine! 👍🙏
Thanks alot for the kind words! This one belongs to a client and ofc I suggested the new frets, he is gonna do it in the future! Maybe I ll upload that too! Nice guitar! Good stuff!
Thank you for showing us your work!
Thanks for your kindness! 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent review and great English Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words bud! Much appreciated!
How long do you let the black paint dry and how much is it reduced? Same question for the clear. Thank you!
Its reduced up to 10%, same with the clear, different kind of paints might have other reduction percentages, you should read each products instructions! Same goes with dry times, job was done in winter with allot of humidity, took 3 days to dry... different weather conditions and hardeners will require different drying times, again, product instructions are always saying what kind of hardeners (fast, slow etc) is optimal for each conditions along with flash times etc... hope it helps!
Yes, that helps a lot, thanks! Also, would you ever sand down paint after it's dry to try and make it more even, removing scratches, blending in edges etc. before applying a clear coat or does the clearcoat take care of that and make it invisible? Any help would be appreciated.@@sonicalmods781
@@gxtx6037 ofc I do level the base! But that's something you have to do before applying it! When you fill its alot easier to prepare the area by sanding more to where color and clear will be applied, that's why I only rough the base up with a scratch pad! Nice question!
First time I've seen that setup for straightening the neck before fret leveling.
I was looking for a way to use an edge with certified flatness without the need to have a dedicated edge for every scale length! Also I am doing alot of modern multiscale instruments and the conventional edges wasn't working.
🥱😴
Thanks for your comment
Thank you for the great video and walk through of your setup. I just bought an HB35+ last week as budget option to try out a Semi-hollow guitar and was pleasantly surprised at how good the quality of the finishing and playability out of the box it was for the price. I agree with you that the coil splitting is not usable (unlike my Epiphone Modern LP) but that's what my Strats are for. That being said, I've ordered some Luthier tools to learn how to level frets and polish them (I've only done basic setups on my other guitars) and I'll be using this video of yours and your fret leveling video to guide me through that. Thanks again!
Nice color for a sg mostly it was red or black but this one is so awesome
Was that limon oil you used in the fret board?
That's correct, if i feel the fretboard is dry i apply some but i mainly use hard wax on my boards which I applied right after the lemon oil.
// Can we UNDONE this? /// WTF did you learn your English? In the ghettoes of Chicago? // Can we UNDO this ? Or... // CAN THIS BE UNDONE // Thumbs DOWN.
Your English is very good. You done a really good job with that Harley Benton, and I appreciate your opinion on this guitar thanks 😊
Thanks allot for the positive feedback! 🙏🙏🙏 My best wishes for a creative 2024!
Love that colour wow
Especially when aged it's so unique!
The only win win when it comes to lacquer in my eyes you buy blue then get green down the line in 20 years. My Polaris white Sg’s were a hard one to swallow brilliant white to cigarette stain yellow. My sapphire blue SG starting to green up.
WTF did you say?
Very good video. Your voiceover was fine
Thank you for the kind words! Happy 2023!
thank you, i have the hb35 plus lemon, seeing how you adjusted the truss rod made me wanna redo mine because i always adjust truss rod with strings on it and never used the tool that you have used to really level them properly
Thanks for the positive feedback! Actually adjusting your truss rod with full string tension is the way to go when you setup your guitar! I adjusted it the way I did for the purposes of fret leveling! If you need more information feel free to ask! I am trying to always answer my comments since they are not that many anyways! Happy 2024!
Looks much better! 👍🏻 The only other thing you could have done was clean the poles in the pickups
Thanks for the comment! I ll keep that in mind next time!
Well done. I enjoyed watching you work so carefully on this guitar. I am considering trying one.
First off, thanks for being kind 🙏😊 I am sure you won't regret your purchase, hey! I consider getting one myself! 🤫🤫🤫🤭🤭
In the meantime, I purchased the guitar from Thomann (fortunately I live in Germany, so it was here in two days) and I have had it for the weekend. I agree with you that it is well worth the investment. I needed to fix 3 slightly high frets, nothing extreme. After changing the strings (Ernie Ball 46-10), taking the acting down a bit and adjusting the pickups, the guitar sings beautifully. It is a really flexible tool. I particularly like the fact that it offers coil split, and the combination of neck HB and bridge SC is really wonderful. The Bridge PU does clean jazz but also crunchy blues. The bridge HB does searing lead tones. The electronics are quiet. The workmanship is just fine. I could find no defects in the finish or in the binding work. The tuners are ok, the guitar stays in tune and they run smoothly. The top is not AAAA, but it is certainly AA and the lemon color is really great. I have played quite a few guitars in my life, been playing for 50 years, and I think the guitar offers the most value for the money of any I have seen, played or owned, and that includes guitar brands like PRS, Gibson and Fender. I do have to admit that it is my first hollow body guitar, as I had never been very impressed with them in the past. Optically and sonically, this guitar is just a great piece of work. For the vast majority of players, more than enough. So many people spend too much money on guitars because they are fixated on brand names. Most of them should spend that extra money on lessons instead. Only the top 5% require more than this instrument can deliver. Thank you for convincing me to buy this great guitar! @@sonicalmods781
@@tjdmd Enjoy your new toy bud! I am glad i offered some positive feedback!
Your English was great
Thanks a lot sir 🙏🙏🙏
nice work man,i always enjoy your videos!😉
Thank you for the kind words bud! 🙏🙏🙏
Your voice-over was great. Thank you for your honest opinion of this lower-price guitar. I have a different model from the same brand, I have replaced nut & bridge, and I find it gives me just as much pleasure to play as my "nice" guitars costing more than ten times the price.
Thanks for the kind words 🙏 It's a blessing having all those budget instruments allowing us to be creative! I also own a HB Bass, i am very happy with it!
Hello. I have the same one in the same finish for sure, too. Please can you tell me how high you have the pickups in relation to the first and sixth strings? Thank you.
Tommorow I ll check if I still have the same block I used to measure them, I ll leave a new comment here!
@@sonicalmods781 Hello. Were you able to measure the height of your humbuckers?
@@alvarocalero5571hey there! Actually i have replaced the block i measured the pups, but here are some tips to find your own sweet spot! Always start with your "go to" pickup (bridge or neck) keep in mind there's no wrong adjustment, now as long as you play bellow 15th fret without having the "phase effect" you are ok, if you want more brightness, output and compression go higher, if you want more darker sound, more accent and dynamics go lower, after you are happy eith the pickup you use the most adjust the other so it doesn't have a significant difference in the output unless you are doing something totally different with the other pup and you are only using it with a specific rig, or for some other reason you don't mind it been much louder or silent than the other! I hope this helps! Feel free to ask me back if you want something else!
It's spelt Respiratory. James Earl Jones used scuba gear for the voice of Darth Vader.
Hahaha, thanks for letting me know!
sir your English is not so bad, I'm french and I understand you perfectly.
Happy to hear it! Thanks! 🙏
Hello sir, I'm doing a similar repair these days. Very similar ways as your work, but after final polishing, I found a light edge appears between old finish and new finish. How did you solve that?
Nice question! The flatter the end result the more unnoticed the hairline will be. To get it flat without sanding through color you need to slightly over sand the area before applying the color.
@@sonicalmods781 Thank you! I'll try it again.
Great work.
Thank you for the kind words 🙏🙏🙏🙏 appreciate it!

I think it looks scarier in the Video than in real, i ll keep in mind though, thanks for the comment
A good time
They really are pretty good , have a single humbucker version that’s great
Yes, nice playability and sound!
It reminds me of a SG special that came out around the late 2000’s. It had the Pelham blue finish with the batwing cover and dot inlays. Might this be that model?
At this point that's the most common answer! Actually a 2001 special in Pelham Blue, someone also mentioned Inverness green, i am not sure if that was an option for 2001 specials though. Maybe someone in the comments could tell us, Inverness green and Pelham Blue aren't so far off, at least in my eyes!
I think this was probable a 2001/2002 period SG special in Blue Teal flip flop that's faded to green?
I am not gonna lie, all those greenish-blueish colors looks the same to me! as long as i dont have to color match them for a repair!!! :D@@ianbenson7804

Exactly! The yellowing of the laquer gets it to look greenish!
