How to clean a spark arrestor on a Stihl weed trimmer
Thank you for the advice on cleaning the spark arrestor.. my fs 85 is running now
Thank you sir
You are now a friend of mine. I had tried everything . The screen was a black mat. I torched it and it burned on its own like a candle.
Hi couldcyou a video on how to clean the arrestor on a stihl fs 85
I review this saw without using it :P
This is not a review, this is an overview.
Very helpful! Thank you.
That 1/4 pico chain is nice. It’s fast on those little saw bars. Thanks for the info, David.
I am getting full power when I press the throttle but it gradually increase on my sthil 130 my spark arrester is clean but I am still getting this issue can someone tell me what it could be
Could be a couple things. Try adjusting your valves. .010 feeler gauge make its on top dead center. I have a Tik tok channel the name is The.Man.of.Stihl I have a video on there of how to do this exact one
@@manofsteel423 ok I will try that but I was wondering if it could be the carburetor because it's not original it's a hipa carburetor and the dimensions are slightly different
@@franzefrancis5512 what does you mean the dimensions aren’t the same? Is it an aftermarket carb
@@manofsteel423 I'm not sure I bought it ordered it of Amazon
Does fs 160 has a spark arester?
If you’re in the US it should
Bad aduio
Bad Pselling

First time I’ve ever had that complaint. Might be on your end possibly??

I have a 2 year old fs38 trimmer that bogs down but eventually revs good. My spark arrestor was not clogged and I cleaned with torch anyway. Still bogs out. No matter what remedies I follow nothing changes. I hate this trimmer.
The accelerator pump in the Zama carb is leaking air. A common sign is boggy acceleration and the purge bulb won't fill fully or at all.
The accelerator pump in the Zama carb is leaking air. A common sign is boggy acceleration and the purge bulb won't fill fully or at all. To fix, you need to remove the pump and replace the o-ring. Common size is 3mm ID x 1mm width. This is for the C1Q-S97 & C1Q-S186 carburetors. The C1Q-S71 takes a 2.3mm x 0.8mm o-ring.
Thank you so much. You basically saved me a bunch of money to have someone do this for me.
You’re so welcome!!! I’m glad I could help!!
I am using this on a 25cc Craftsman weedeater that takes universal attachments🌀 allabout.wiki/Sun-Joe? The-setup-was-slightly-annoying-because it was overly difficult to get the chain on the bar/gear. I read some reviews talking about this thing leaking a lot of bar oil, but it honestly does not leak any more than my 3 other full size real saws. Once set up this things been pretty awesome. I moved to a very overgrown property in southern Missouri and this thing has been a huge help with getting stuff cleaned up. My first test cut was on a low hanging walnut tree branch about 5" in diameter and it cut through like butter. I have so far successfully brought down walnut, oak, locust thorn and those cigar tree branches (whatever they're called) up to 7 or 8 inches in diameter with no issue.....other random brush is gone in seconds. Pop the cover every once in a while to check for debris and make sure to tighten the fresh chain every so often as they tend to stretch a bit. Only time I've bogged down while cutting is when i forgot to open the choke on my power head after getting started lol. I've used this quite a few times now since receiving and have had no problems. I can easily recommend this product to anyone needing a cost effective tool for trimming trees or even basic saw tasks around a home/property. Worth every penny so far.
just what I needed
Glad it helped
Awesome, thank you!! Bought this trimmer the other day, and changed to a different string head and the plate fell off. Didn’t know which way that plate went back on. Lol!!
Right on. Glad it helped
I have a 5 year to 7 year old FS250 that starts up but it boggs really bad and is very slow to warm up without partial choking. High speed jet all the way CCW helps but not right even after warm up. I suspect a fuel problem but this looks a possible culprit. Your thoughts Sir? BTW...Great Video!!!
My screen was missing when I checked it, will this cause bog down? Only had saw in shop once for a tune up
The exhaust port could be clogged up take the muffler off and look at the exhaust port on the cylinder and see if it’s clogged there
@@manofsteel423 yes this is how I found the screen was not there it's a clean port. As was the intake I was wondering if not having the screen at all would effect anything.
@@mike_hunt_fish_trap no the screen being missing would not make it bog down. Try adjusting the H side of the carburetor
Worked like a charm for me!!! Thank you Sir!!!!!!. Now my wife's Sthil is once again louder than she is..... No she's not whining about her Stihl not signing at high revs! The 15 minutes and lil bit of propane sure beats the heck out of the minimum $75 and 2 weeks it would have spent at the repair shop even after I had already replaced the air filter and spark plug!!!!
Good deal I’m glad it helped you.
Remove spark arrestor and throw it away
And burn down a Forrest or a house. Not good advice
I cleaned my arrestor, still bogs down. The carburetor must need adjustment or replaced.
What are you working on
@@manofsteel423 fs55r, it’s been a light user since I’ve had it for about 5 years. I knew it wasn’t the spark arrestor when I took it out and it barely was gummed but I cleaned it anyway.
@@adamelam6385 try adjusting the high screw, it’ll be the one that’s on the left. You make have to take the limiter cap off and adjust it to see if you can get the RPMS up. If that doesn’t work make sure you carb screen isn’t dirty
@@manofsteel423 thank you sir for the quick response. If I tackle it this week sometime I’ll let you know how it goes.

Is the saw good bud ? Was thinking of buying 1
I just heard from a dealer/vendor that Stihl is reverting back to the HT-131 in production as a result of the chains throwing on the HT-133s-- can anyone comment to that effect about the chains frequently breaking on this model?
hello I have a fs 240 that loses my strength clean the muffler but it continues doing the same thing that can be
Try adjusting the H side of the carb
Good morning, thanks for having answered. I adjusted the H but it is still the same, I removed the carbulator, I cleaned the needles, I cleaned them, I changed the start cable and the sparck pluc.
@@josemhernandez7947 If it is still giving you problems it’s one of two things do you have an air leak somewhere or you just need a new carburetor
@@manofsteel423 Thank you very much I will verify those details and I will buy you the carbulator and let you know how it went, thank you very much for your help
Hello mr stihl I wanted to let you know that the trimmer is working very well the carbulator was full of soil I don't know how but it is already working very well
Is there an end date to the recall? I was looking for something else and came across this, my serial number is in the range.
There shouldn’t be a end date. If your machine has not been looked at and it’s in that series of weed trimmers. Take it to your local dealer and have them check it out. Chances are yours is not a problem or you would have noticed it.
Thank you! Kudos for the fast reply to an old video.
@@humandiesel7462 no problem. I haven’t made any more videos lately which I’m meaning to but I always replay to my viewers
Awsome! Thank you so much
I have a Stihl fs45 and mine is in the back of the muffler,I didn't have a blow torch so all I did was put mine in a fire lol I let it get red then hit it with a wire brush,it seemed to do ok lol thanks for the video man,it's a awesome trick that saves a ton of money

Good night I have a stihl fs 220 weed wacker it stop working as soon as it heats up. New carburetor. Carburetor filters. New spark plug. New oil filters and woes. New switch. New coils. Everything change and still has the same problem. Start as soon as it heats up stop working and won't restart. Any advice please
SELL PPV ignition mod
@@manofsteel423 that was change as well, still has the same problem
SELL PPV have you checked the cylinder and piston to make sure there is no scoring. If not then you’ll have to do a pressure vacuum test to see if there is an air leak somewhere
@@manofsteel423 how you do that pressure vacuum test? And we both piston and cylinder
SELL PPV you have to block off the exhaust port and leave the spark plug in, and you’ll need an adapter to put on the intake side and pump a very little amount of air into the cylinder and it should hold air
Where the heck is the exhaust screen in the stihl fs 85 weedwacker
Hemant Bisnath usually it’s on the front of the muffler and it sits horizontal
@@manofsteel423 I took of the whole muffler and everything seems to be sealed.. i watched another video and cleaned the exhaust port but the exhaust screen is what i can't locate
And what if it's not the screen that's clogged and it still does it
william jones try adjusting the H side of the carb
@@manofsteel423 thanks man will do.
I have an older 2005 or 06 model HS80 hedge trimmer. The arrestor has been taken out after it developed a bogging issue when tilted on it's right side. Ran good for a bit and started the bog again. I put it on the shelf 3-4 years ago and just pulled it back out to service. New lines, carb, cleaning and everything. Ran good up until it's warm and sure enough the bog returns on it's side. I don't get it?
Hi I cleaned screen but weedeater still bogs when I give it full throttle and start to trim grass? I replaced the carberator as well
Ed Mireles take the muffler off look at the cylinder and piston and see if there is scoring
Spot on. I did a complete tune up (which was needed) and my 40s was still choking. I knew my Stihl blower had a spark arrestor but didn't know there was one on the muffler on the trimmer. Burned off the carbon build up...voila! I appreciate you posting the video.
I Just bought a Br400 and got it started for about 2 times and now I can't get it to go again. It act likes it wants to fire. I replaced fuel filter, spark plug cleaned carb. I did notice the spark plug boot doesn't connect very secure. Just not sure where to go next or if it does have a spark arestor. Thank you for the video though.
Dave Jackson Did you notice if the spark plug was soaking wet
I believe the spark plug was wet I didn't really pay attention to it to be honest. It doesn't have a spark arrestor though.
Dave Jackson sounds like the carb is flooding. Get a new carb or rebuild the old one.
@@manofsteel423 Alright sounds good. I'll try that thank you
Absolute junk! Stihl dropped the ball hard here!
MrTreewizard I agree. Which is the reason they went back to the old version
@@manofsteel423 I bought the new revised ht 131 and it's worse! Shaft has a plastic sprocket in it. I get 3 - 10 cuts and it breaks. I've returned it 7 times now in about 2 months. They can't seem to fix it and they can't seem to refund me or anything. Called Stihl and was told we know and everyone is having the same issues yet there's nothing we can do about it.
The shaft has a “plastic sprocket”.. what does that mean. The HT131 is the same exact model as the one they used to have. The HT133 is the one they took off the shelf
Hey Man of Steel, I have a BR 340 that starts up easily, idles and throttles up just fine when the engine is cold, but once the engine warms up, it starts to bog down when I hit the throttle. It’ll run at idle forever no matter what though. What do you think may be causing this? I would appreciate your assistance/advice. Thanks in advance!
Bryan Narcisse hey!! Thanks for the question. Try adjusting the H side of the carb, when you have it at full throttle. You make have some trash in the carb, and possible a dirty air filter. Check those first and let me know if that doesn’t help!
hello there, i have a 2016 bg86c. i bought it second hand a year ago but it it has very limited power. barely could blow anything. the exhaust does not have the spark arrester or the screen. can you help please. i have just ordered a brand new coil pack. not sure if that was the right thing to do. any help would be appreciated.
Elvin Benjamin it has Nothing to do with the coil. Take the screen out of the muffler and Most likely it’s going to be completely clogged with carbon. Burn it off
@@manofsteel423 thanks for the reply. The exhaust has no screen. Its a complete exhaust. I took it off and ran the blower without it and same thing. The coil I have on it came off a Stihl strimmer so I ordered a new replacement for the blower. I have no idea now.
Elvin Benjamin did you look inside the exhaust port and make sure the exhaust port isn’t clogged with carbon?
Mine doesn't look like it has the arrestor, just a one piece muffler ??
Thank you, excellent information. a video or even some photographs would have added to your explanation.
Drew McFarlane I have a video on how to clean a spark arrestor
Thank You.
Drew McFarlane look through my videos I have one that shows how to clean a spark arrestor
Thanks for the help. This simple trick saved me trip to the Stihl dealer.
Ooh! That looks a lot funner than how I did it last time! Thanks!
Would a Stihl fs80 weed trimmer be the same by the way it was a great video thank you for sharing
simon kenton yes the FS80 has a screen in the muffler as well. It will do the same thing
@@manofsteel423 hi I should have asked if the Stihl FS 80 string trimmer has a spark arrestor in the exact same place as the model you showed and is it accessed and taken out the same way thanks for your response thanks for your time
My string trimmer idles fine and is okay once it reaches maximum throttle. But if I hold the throttle mid way, it bogs. So I only have idle and slightly above and insane speed. Needless to say, I can use a lot of string that way. It's been doing it since about the first 10 times I've run it since it was new.
another lecture
Thanks .... I did the cleaning but I see you skipped the part putting the cover back again. It Is a pain in the rear to do that!
William Rojas once you do it 5000 times like I have it’s not so bad. Glad the video helped you
Thank you!!! You made a hero out of this old lady.
