    Pretty much every hike up there is great. There's a little circuit hike book that's worth buying if it's still in print. Trails are well marked enough you don't really need topos, the book has sufficient. The main problem with SNP is the cost of camping every night. Around 26 bucks I think. Plus the fees, but I assume anyone road tripping it has an annual pass. You might want to have a look at a Rand McNally road atlas or a Virginia gazetteer to figure out where the national forest is nearby. You can definitely get there & back for less than 26 in gas. Another good SNP trick is to fill out a backpackers permit and put your campsites near the roads at trailheads. Then you can Day hike, bring your car to the trailhead you've chosen, hike in a little bit and sling a hammock. Not too far back to the car for beer and fresh food. Plus a pooper at the trail head often. There's an overlook at the intersection of the skyline and Blue ridge parkway you can camp for free. Noisy but it's a constant sort of noisy with the trucks flying by. It's up by the abandoned hotel. There are a couple sneaky spots to camp on the skyline but a lot of cops. On the parkway there are a few more and less cops. Go down and visit the St Mary's wilderness. It's gorgeous and in the national Forest technically. Some free sites down there I think. Check ioverlander. A final note about Shenandoah: you will probably see bears. It's about the most definite place in the United States to visit for bears because it's the most densely populated. If you see one on the trail don't freak out, they're usually very chill. If there's a big boy who won't get out of your way just do the whoa bear thing. Don't look them in the eye but look at him, back up and say wooh bear in a low voice, hold your hands out to make yourself look big. 80% of the time they'll run off or walk off preemptively. 10% of the time you do the whoa bear thing. The other 10% you end up skirting around the bear because he's very very interested in a blackberry bush or some such.

    • @EscapingNormalLife
      @EscapingNormalLife 7 дней назад

      wow that’s some great info! i actually know of the abandoned hotel you’re talking about. i slept there 2years ago. i’ve actually had to walk around a bear once- but not in SNP. it was the Tetons actually. and yeah, he was just busy eating berries he didn’t care about any of us. but he was about 7-8’ away. so, close. Thanks for all the great info and watching!!

      @theminister1154 7 дней назад

      @@EscapingNormalLife You bet. there's also a great spot at the top of st marys 20m down the parkway. Parking lot in the NF so you can stay there 2 weeks... but right next to the parkway. couple more as you head south. iOverlander has several marked.

    Erik, your setup is quite practical and the particular Subaru model you have has ample room as a vehicle. My question is how is your gas mileage with all the stuff on your car? Is this Subaru a good reliable car? The one thing that Subaru does well is ground clearance to allow you to travel in many different places. Since you live in it probably you don't have to move from place to place too often I assume. Cheers from Oregon.

    • @EscapingNormalLife
      @EscapingNormalLife 10 дней назад

      hello! i’m getting just under 24mpg. it’s been reliable so far- but it’s also a pretty new car. it’s only 4.5yrs old. still under the extended warranty. so it’s good right now. i don’t have to move around a lot- but i choose to. i get bored quickly and usually only stay in an area 3-4days before moving. places like Oregon also have WAY to much stuff to explore for me to sit still. thanks for watching and commenting!

    The down side of SNP loop hikes is the vast majority of the trails start at high elevations. I love living next door to SNP! You could have easily stealth camped at one of the numerous trail heads parking areas on the edge or boundaries that lead into the park! Do come back!

      I would recommend extreme caution when choosing a stealth camping location in or around park boundaries. Without going into the history of SNP and local towns, or even more recent events, I will simply say that in some of the hollows, the lines between privately-owned and SNP land are, in a word, "blurry." In perhaps a few of those hollows, you do not want to have a middle-of-the-night conversation with a local about your right to be there. Again, there is much history in regard to local sentiment - some of it recent. I don't agree with some of the ways locals have treated visitors, and have witnessed disregard and disrespect of the land and locals by visitors. It saddens me that the situation is sometimes adversarial, but I wouldn't want a friend coming to SNP to camp (particularly nearby boundaries/trailheads) without knowing this.

    Very informative; thanks. Four years ago I decided to build a tear drop SLEEPER so we could save time and money on hotels when we go across country to visit. It was to be pull-able by a compact car and still get 30 mpg, and to require no more prep than getting in and shutting the door. But two things happened in the over four years it took me to build it. An airline opened up a direct flight to where we go for half the price it used to take, and my spouse pushed to make it a camper. Well I just finished it and we took it out camping once . Pulled just fine by a corolla and slept great. We now intend to explore the country when I retire, so your tips will help.

      @@EscapingNormalLife Driving clear across the state to a shopping mall just doesn't seem worth the time, gasoline or my sanity. On Sleeping Bear Dunes, it's one of those places people swear! you have to see! But the truth is, the entire Lake Michigan shoreline is a dune system (longest fresh water dune system in the world, BTW,) and you can get nicer views out over the dunes and the Lake from almost anywhere from Empire to South Haven.

      @@JeffinBville well we went because I was visiting a friend who has a little summer vacation spot about 20minutes from there. we wanted to get out and stretch our legs for a minute. and he has kids who like going there. I wouldnt have gone out of my way for it- but it's one of those small things that make an area kind of unique. Like Leavenworth, WA or Roswell, NM. I was kind of told the same about Sleeping Bear- that its nice but not worth going out of your way for. and that one WOULD have been out of my way. about 6hrs round trip to be exact. so- didn't seem worth it. if I had more time, I would have considered it- but I had to be in Wisconsin in about 24hrs from then. thanks for watching and commenting!
