The Black Robin Farm project is a multi-million pound scheme made possible with a grant from the first (Conservative Government) Levelling Up Fund. Works are expected to take place later in 2025 and throughout 2026 to create this cultural countryside attraction.
Project Director Joe Hill paints detail on the proposals in this video, which has been improved with drone imagery and enhanced graphics to clearer highlight the message.

Such a waste of money creating a “cultural centre” at Black Robin farm. It’s not even in the town - any visitors will drive up & drive off… The Beachy Head centre is having to close due to lack of funding + there’s Birling Gap. So many other things this cash could be spent on than some liberal arts nonsense

We're really pleased that the videos here are finding their way around the world and engaging people in memories of or the evolution of the town. Heritage and history are so vital, but there's a real chance that the videos here may even outlive the architecture, which is kind of crazy when you think about it. Thanks for viewing and enjoying.

This presentation covers the period from my birth until today I'm 75 so the development covered by Alan Wenham sort of parallels my own. I found a number of things I didn't know about very interesting but he chronicles the establishment of the town as a major destination in a very measured and informative way. Like me he clearly has a major affection for the town. I would heartily recommend anybody with an interest in Eastbourne to invest an hour of their time watching this..............its excellent.

A joy to watch as my personal connection with Eastbourne spans most of the same period. In 1947, I was 6, my father returned from his war time service in India with his new family to settle in Willingdon. 1: 23 absolute spot on. Did I miss the part about 60mph speeding in the upper part of the seafront, the disgraceful and prolific amount of anti-social driving in this town which makes it so hard for older and vulnerable people to cross certain roads. There is a culture in tourist towns for lack of calming measures to create more freedom of movement.

Love my hometown eastbourne but i do think there needs to be cycling lanes on the beach which Brighton and hove has. And maybe more restaurants cafes seating areas sports and attractions like a big wheel along the beach i dont think it was a good idea getting rid of the big wheel in eastbourne at western lawns.

    • @avs4365

Unfortunately the road & pathway narrows as you reach the eastern side mixing pedestrians and cyclists into close contact especially between the pier and the Langham. Kids have been injured there. Widening isn't an option. The one thing the beach lacks is a shaded area along the whole front. Would prefer to keep it different to Brighton protecting it's uniqueness.

The evidence in the 1920 Crumbles murder trial may have seemed largely circumstantial, but you need to take into account the fact that one of the defendants, whilst on remand, tried to inveigle another prisoner to provide him with a false alibi . Also, both defendants later made statements blaming each other for the murder. All in all, I think the verdicts were sound.

Interesting talk, Alan. There was also seine netting for sprats and mackerel on the Crumbles in the 1950s because I remember helping to haul the nets. You mentioned pleasure boats, and I worked for George Grooms in the last year there were rowing boats for hire on the beach just east of the pier, and that was in the early 60s. The pay was poor but it was a fun job, pushing people out in the boats, and then having to tow them back when they were carried too far east by wind and tide. I'll never forget the Royal Sovereign lightship, not only because we could see it from the back of our house at high tide, but also because the fog horn rattled our sash windows whenever it was foggy, which seemed to be far too often.
