What about graphite shafts? Can you use the propane torch?
Any advice or different steps for using shaft pulls?
What's shown here is the incorrect way to perform this task and will very likely damage the shaft from too much un-necessary heat. The correct order: Put the shaft into the puller 1st with some initial tension applied, THEN put heat on the hosel for 10 15 seconds MAX. Just remember to apply continuous gentle pressure on the puller and the shaft will easily come off in 1/2 the time and 1/2 the heat so it doesn't ruin the graphite fibers.
Although some people do the way you do it, most advanced will do it the way I’ve shown in the video To say my way is incorrect just indicated probably not to experienced in shaft removal
Does someone have the link to the video where he does this with the pings he was talking about?
How do I drill out the hosel to make the head lighter but also still accept a taper tip shaft? I have a SM9 Vokey T grind that comes in at over D8 with a DD TI S400 shaft 1/2 inch over length. I'm looking for about 5-6 grams lighter. Read on WRX that an option is to drill out the hosel or port the back. Don't want to port. But by the looks of this video, I would be making the hosel size wider. So now I'm a little befuddled as to how to get the job done.
Patriot,,,,,,,would you please give me info on the reamer you got through a machine shop. ,,,,,,, any mfg,,,cat number,,,, or any other ID marks on the longer (long lasting) reamer that might help me get one......tried several machine shops in Houston,,,,,,,,but no real help unfortunately,,,,,thx much!!!!
i dont have a part number, i ask for a .370 slow drill reamer. most machine shops should be able to get that for you
@@patriotgolfusa any idea what Type it is that makes it so durable,,,,,,COBALT?? THX MUCH!
@@PARDS2honestly no I don’t know, getting a slow reamer vs a fast reamer seems to make the difference. What I did was ask my machine shop to order slow drill for a .370 reamer
Exactly what I needed thanks! FYI an electrical heat gun seems to work too.
So all plastic do-dads have to be taken off and replaced when removing a shaft? I've got a bubble head driver that I want to remove from a graphite shaft. Thanks for the vid. It was informative!
is that a graphite shaft? if so, does the heat affect the shaft at all?
I’m changing from graphite to steel iron. Shafts and would like to give the graphites to my older friend. Thanks for that
My first attempt to regrip a graphite shaft iron. When I attempted to slide the new grip over the new tape, it caused the tape to dislodge. Any tips? Too much solution?
I also should mention that my shafts have a steel component wrap over the graphite shaft.
Can you use this method on a graphie shaft as well?
you ---- are ----- the ------ man!!!!!
Excellent tips. thank you.
I hope the buisness works out for you,its a really nice shop.
Yes you could. Considering they would technically be 2” over standard due to the fact that the heads weigh 275g, you would want to add weight to the butt end to keep swing weights down low
Could you fit the single length irons to 38-38.25”?
Awesome man instant sub
I have a 2009 x forged 5 iron head to complete my v stamp set. However all the other heads I got accepted taper, In this peticular hozel it's not fitting. It seems I need to perform this bore out but I need right bit. I was able to drill through but still will not fit walls. Should I get a .355 rheemer to shave the inside walls more? Ty mike
Thank you I found how to do 2 things I'm working on, immediately watching these. Pga super in austin can't and won't even do this.
Cool ty
I've learned different makers use different methods to achieve the same results. I'm a hobby club builder. Place my club in the puller (graphite or steel) before applying the heat. White-painted wood heads are the devil.
Using any type of flame can burn the tape and damage graphite shafts. Use a heat gun or a hair dryer on high over three sides. This will safely soften the glue to remove the grip tape.
I would use a heat gun as well for better control, but a small flame works if you’re careful.
Nice. Ive done it the hard way many times.
Graphite shafts?
Ever use a heat gun? Softer heat and less chance to debond the shaft epoxy. Pretty narrow range between the two epoxies. Just wondered.
Im watching this because I’m a DIY guy but you make ot too simple I’m considering opening up shop!
I wash grips with Dawn dish soap and a nylon scrub brush , no rinse , towel dry . They last a very long time ,(unless you have Winn grips that will decompose in the plastic packaging ... never mind trying to wash them).
Curious what kind of heat gun do you use?
I use a mini torch, heat gun I have is just a cheap one I got years ago, I think a black and decker
You should NOT free hand drill a hosel. There are head clamps that secure the head perfectly straight. You use them with a drill press for an accurate cut. Also you need to lubricate a specialized 0.370 drill bit in order to not overheat the head.
Yep. Also you can put the heads in a vice. Lubricating is recommended, but not necessary when drilling out a small amount. If you take your time and go slow, there should be no issues
Thanks!!Very helpful:)
Amazing tip!! Thanks!!
Interesting!
Put the club in the shaft extractor under pressure , then use the propane until it lets go , no guess work
You are EXACTLY correct. This allows you to use minimal heat for the process.
Thanks for the tip! Going to try a heat gun the next time.
Great tip! Thank you!
👍👍
I prefer a heat gun on low setting.
Heat gun is good, mini torch just does it faster, but just depends on what you feel comfortable with

Could you use a hairdryer? 🤔
Yes, but I find a heat gun from Harbor Freight works even better.
If you take out a steel shaft and replace it with a graphite one, How will this effect swing weight since Ultimately that's what I am trying to reduce going to graphite? Also how would I know if the replacement graphite shaft should be a tapered tip?
Most heads are parallel except Titleist, Mizuno, Srixon, XXIO and some Taylor made. I keep shaft ends TT and parallel to confirm fit. If you are going from steel to graphite shafts you will need a swing weight machine to properly weight the shafts.
Are you trying to reduce total club weight or swing weight? There is a difference. Just going to a lighter graphite shaft while using the same head and grip can increase swing weight while lowering total club weight.
When reshafting from steel to graphite two things will happen. You will reduce the club weight and increase the swingweight. To maintain SW you can drill the head or add a counter balance weight.
If you're not a pro, it's not gonna matter much.
Hello, I need to know how to get the tape off the inside of the old grip. I saved a couple sets of newer grips but I cannot get it out lol
Lighter fluid and a tube brush like in a shot gun cleaning kit.
Just getting into tinkering with my own clubs, replacing shafts, grips, heads, driver adapters, etc... Maybe I'll take this further as I've done a little bit of work for friends. Having said that, any recommendations for a shaft puller?
It's weird...I just weighted my clubs and I get a big jump between PW and 50 deg. 9i=452.6g, PW=460.7g, 50=490.1g, 54=473.3g, 58=475.7g. All my wedges (Mizuno T22) have DG S400 shaft and irons (Mizuno Pro 223) have PX LZ 6.0 120g.
That strange. Should weigh around 7-8 grams more than the PW. Every other club looks correct, I would double check the length and swingweight, 30g is too much of a difference
@@patriotgolfusa I don't have a swingweight scale. My 50deg head weigh 301g, shaft is 130g and grip is 54g. Raw shaft length is 33.5". It's probably like a D7...
Great tip! What do you use for graphite shaft?
Same technique for steel and graphite
"promosm"
I’ve changed the grips on hundreds of clubs and never used heat. Learn something new everyday. Thanks! I’ll give it a try.
For graphite shafts I use an older paint stripping “gun,” rather than a torch.
