The Internet Archive Is in Big Trouble...and It Might Be Their Own Fault | Episode 18
The Internet Archive, a non-profit repository for BILLIONS of pieces of media, has been lending digital books from its library since 2011 without a hitch. But in March 2020, they made one crucial mistake that now poses an existential threat to the online "Library of Alexandria."
This week, The Internet Archive lost its appeal in a lawsuit brought by the 4 major publishing conglomerates. And while the publishers are *technically* right in their copyright infringement complaint, the consequences of the suit could be catastrophic for the Archive.

Why New Laws to Protect Kids Online Might Backfire | Ep 16: Paul Singer
Просмотров 1014 дней назад
Most people can agree that protecting children from harmful online content - self-harm, disordered eating, gore, disinformation, extreme social pressure - is a good idea. Much of that falls on parents. But algorithms are disturbingly good at showing us extreme content we never searched, but can't look away from. Addiction (and thus more ads) is social media's business model. And keeping up with...

There's Never Been a Better Time to Talk About Death | Ep 13: Caren Martineau & Jade Adgate
Просмотров 11Месяц назад
You and everyone you love will die. There's no way around it. Yet we rarely talk or think about the topic until we have to. For the first time in human history, we are "living longer and dying slower." That's good news, but it also creates a cultural disassociation with the reality of death. But there's a growing movement - online and IRL - around death literacy. It advocates for ongoing conver...

DON"T YOU DARE TOUCH ME!!! Okay. How about we just don't read too much into words, and euphamize everything. How dare you!!!! Words are sacred!!! Sigh. Just... nevermind.

    Censorship has become the scourge of the internet. I'm fine with journalists, governments and tech platforms giving me their opinion about information so that I can agree with it or ignore it. What I'm not fine with, is the interference of free expression of supposedly free people in a supposedly free society. North Korea does a great job of preventing misinformation. I'm not in a hurry to join them.

    • @InfluencePodcast
      @InfluencePodcast 3 месяца назад

      I totally get what you're saying. There are some complexities: 1. Constitutionally, we have the freedom to say whatever we want in a "public square." Digitally, that is "The Internet," or whatever website I want to own and operate. 2. Social media platforms (eg RUclips) are PRIVATE companies with their own interests. They can (and have) removed offensive and harmful speech on their platforms because it's damaging to their ecosystem, their bottom line (advertisers), or causes them legal liability. 3. Conversely, social media platforms have an INCENTIVE to amplify divisive, inflammatory, an partisan content because people can't help but look at it (a prior guest on this show explained it like a "car crash" - a thing you don't want to see, but can't look away from.) 4. In this analogy, a conspiracy theorist or anti-vaxer might hold a meeting or a protest in a public park, or perhaps on their own hosted web forum. They have EVERY RIGHT to do this. But now, social media algorithms PUSH that content in front of millions of other people who would NEVER have attended that meeting, or visited that website. Because they are not well-versed in digital literacy (and who is? It moves SO fast), they assume it to be true - especially if shared by a trusted family member or friend. So it's not really about "freedom," it's about the scale at which information can be weaponized by bad actors, and the inability of the public to identify and keep up. I don't think the solution is to silence or remove people from the Internet. It's about EDUCATING the public to understand what reputable journalism is, and to collect a variety of reputable sources in order to come to an informed conclusion about an issue.

    • @robk5427
      @robk5427 3 месяца назад

      @InfluencePodcast - Section 230 is another complexity. It protects platforms from liability with respect to what users post. When they begin amplifying, editorializing, shadowbanning and censoring legally protected speech, they're acting as publishers, not platforms. Besides, the antivaxxers are looking pretty good these days. It's almost as if every conspiracy theory we need to be protected from like children, just turns out to be a spoiler alert that normies find out is actually true a couple years later. There's no time in history when the censors were the good guys. And yet, the ones who are in favor of it now, don't seem to want it for children...odd

    Matt Sloan's show Welcome to the Basement is, for my money, the best, most well rounded movie review/criticism show on RUclips. It's a full movie recap mixed with spontaneous MST3K-ish riffing and thoughtful criticism. A blend of smart, silly and well edited that seems very rare nowadays.

    Great episode, it is interesting and so true how hard it is to fight for a viewers loyalty nowadays. There's only a handful of channels where I'll watch most of their content, and it's unfortunate because it feels like the algorithm doesn't allow the opportunity for some other channels that I'm subscribed to to land on my feed. I've known of wheezy since that 2010 era and then remembered his viral sugar videos came across my feed and I was surprised because I hadn't seen anything from him in so many years. Watching this video made me realize I haven't seen anything from him recently. It makes me sad to know that I'm subscribed to so many channels and I won't ever be updated with 90% of what they've been doing

    • @InfluencePodcast
      @InfluencePodcast 3 месяца назад

      I feel the exact same way. Part of the problem is that there is JUST SO MUCH MORE stuff to watch/read/listen to. In some regards, algorithms are very helpful in "sorting" through the most valuable/relevant stuff. In other ways, I feel it's important for us (the audience) to do a bit of work to curate the stuff we care about. I do the same thing as you - I seek out and listen to/watch EVERY item that comes from certain creators. Sometimes the topics aren't all that relevant, but I'm very invested in their particular thing that I still enjoy it.
