Hi everyone. In this video, I try to explain one modern approach to direct a scene for opera, in the hope that people understand certain decisions of directors better. The second hope is to get your honest opinion about my directing, in order to become better in my craft, as I don't see much sense in directing things, that the audience doesn't understand. If you want to build together with me a...

    Ich bin mit der Fledermaus aufgewachsen, mit 3 habe ich die Aufnahme aus Wien mit Harnoncourt auf VHS mindestens jede Woche geschaut, war in unzähligen Vorstellung und habe mal selbst in einer Produktion als Orchestermitglied mitgewirkt. Es macht mich unglaublich glücklich neue Produktionen meiner absoluten Lieblingsoperette anschauen zu können und zu wissen, dass die Welt der Oper/Operette durchaus am Leben bleibt. Vielen Dank für die tolle Arbeit und Bravo!:)

    1. Original language. Always. 2. Analyse and understand music and text. 3. Now it's getting difficult, because a story that worked 200 years ago doesn't necessarily work today. However, I don't need to see a car on stage, naked extras and people in everyday clothes in every work. So you have to think about how to translate the intention of the original into a relevance for today without creating a new version and shifting the perspective, for example. If a work is called "Lohengrin", the main character is not the Heerrufer, which I now use to invent a new perspective just because no one has done it before. It happened in Berlin and it's completely boring. And ridiculous anyway.

    • @TaroDirected
      @TaroDirected 4 месяца назад

      Hi Altonahh10. Thank you for watching and commenting. Your point 2 and 3 I totally agree. I always try to think about the merit, when changing something. Regarding original language, I'm not sure. I'd say it depends on which piece. If it's Strauss, which you can't understand a single word anyways (I'm currently preparing "Frau ohne Schatten"), it's ok, but when I was a child, I saw a German version of Gianni Schicchi and found it hilarious, because I could follow the story by the sung text. I probably wouldn't have had that much fun, if it was in Italian... All the best from Vienna!

Maybe this might clarify some things. ;) Wish you all the best and love from Vienna! Taro

    Wondeful, GREAT dear Taro! Can´t fly neither to Berlin nor to Croatia.... but we do have nice things over here as well. My friend (and GENIUS) Marcelo Lombardero (q.v.) has directed in the past "Clemenza" in a very personal way, setting the action nowadays and shifting abruptly to the past, the same he has done for Strauss´s "Ariadne auf Naxos" in this season at our Opera House the Teatro Colón (complete video available here in RUclips, direct streaming transmission)

    Wow, what a channel! What a topic! What a video! Bravissimo, maestro! <3 The point of being in the middle, finding the sweet spot between "classicality" and "modernity/contemporaryness" - I love that! Of course, (as a contemporary composer) I get irritated more when people deem "classical" music/dance/art/direction to be more valuable and superior to any current "experiment" or "subversion" (like extended techniques, physical theater or non-narrative films - all SOOO FRESH, SOOO NEW XD) - it's just so narrowminded and superficial (because usually they actually do not prefer the way it was done back in the time but a fantasy of XIX century bourgeois social life and operatic grandeur, regardless if it's Nono, Puccini, Weber, Mozart or Monteverdi). It's this deeply rooted preassumption of "back then, they knew how to make good art, now it's all garbage" - like it's been like at least 100 years that this is a thing (you know, THE FREEDOM OF ART) and there were already hundreds of various approaches to how to deal with it, so the "moderately bright" people can get their pretty consonant chords and sickly sweet love stories and the "degenerate intellectuals" can get their sh*t in jars and p*ss in pianos (and all the species in between can get whatever tickles their pickles more or less). So there always will be someone who obliviously buys a ticket for a contemporary craze and someone who wastes their money on billionth performance of "Le nozze..." that is minimalistic not because of artistic choices but only because of the budget and laziness of the producers. But who's to blame? A director who dared to make something new, or a dummy who thought "for the first time in my life I want to feel like a big fish, so I'll go to the opera house for whatever, since everything there is majestic, beautiful and super posh when posted within an illegal selfie with a part of the performance"? GO DIRECTORS! SMASH THOSE JELLY-BRAINS!!!

LG., Christian.

    My favorite "new" operas: Gerardo Gandini, "La Ciudad Ausente" (seen it 4 times in 3 different productions... and full orchestra score in my bookshelves), Oscar Strasnoy, "Cachafaz", Santiago Villalba, "Don Juan" (not based in Tirso, Molière or Mozart, but in Leopoldo Marechal ´s text which is quite different), Rufus Wainwright, "Hadrian" (a bit too long perhaps, bur grand) Charles Wuorinen, "Brokeback Mountain" (atonal and making no concessions, but bold) Giorgos Koumantakis, "The Murderess" (Η Φόνισσα), a masterpiece... but I´ve got the advantage of speaking and understanding Modern Greek), Xenakis, "Oresteia" (this is in Ancient Greek which I don´t understand, but anyway I love the work!)
