Main bearing clearance is around .006-.007 clearance according to plastigauge measurements. Rod bearings were fine with around .002. One of my buddies had his Ford 390 rebuilt, Later he had problems with out of round cylinders, rings getting wore quickly. It was a mess. Turned out, the guy that rebuilt it never took it to the machine shop to get it all trued up, line honed, surface the heads. torque plate check everything. Anyway, I love the 352. When I was a kid about 6-7 years I remember listening to a 1960 Ford with a 352. I thought that was the best sounding engine ever. SO if I win the lotto, that is what I will do, that would be one of my bucket list things to do. Get a nice 60s Ford car and have a built up 352 in it. I had a 64 Ford Galaxy in the early 80s. 4 door hardtop. Remember how the mufflers were way back by the rear bumper. Well, they would collect of water and rot out fairly quickly. I took it down to a muffler shop that bent their own pipes. He came out with some ungodly high amount for new mufflers. I started to head for the door, he said, 'I can just put pipes in there instead. I will bend them so they look stock. He did and it was cheap, they looked good. It looked a lot better, because you could see those old rotted our mufflers back there. It was fairly quiet, as long as you took it easy. But, once you floored, that thing sounded like a stock car. Then, when you back off, it would cackle real nice. I got nailed with it. The Highway Patrol gave me a repair ticket. I put up for sale cheap, and it sold right away, I never did repair. It was not long after that I moved out of state anyway. Things were different back then. They would probably shoot you nowadays.

    I'm being picky , I always hone my cylinders with the cylinders vertical & I hone cylinders oversize with a Lisle or Sunnen hand held honing tools . I also take the shiney spots out with sand paper & use chrome rings and found the rings will make the cylinder round using the same pistons and deglazing the cylinders . I also use a ridge reamer before honing (deglazing) cylinders. All of them worked good after the break in period . I also use 2000 grit to polish my crankshafts. Chrome rings are tough & actually chrome the cylinders to break in , with respectable M/P/G AKA Your doing it the exact way I rebuilt my first engine . Now I build winning stock car engines that are built with all stock parts LOL (there all stock modified parts). Good Luck Motor Mouse

    • @DataToTheZero
      @DataToTheZero 3 месяца назад

      Yes, and keep in mind oversized lifters do/did exist for some engines. This can be good if you need to over bore and destaterious if you drop a regular sized lifter in an overbored lifter bore. So check every lifters bore, sometimes people did one or two to save $$$. Ford, is known to have done weird things to save blocks after machining errors. So don't assume just because you're the first in their things are going to be as they should normally be.

    I would say you need a carb rebuild for sure as it sure seemed to be backfiring and missing when you were first starting it up and then running it at a fast idle. I would be making sure your firing order is good, the points and plugs are good and set properly, your distributor cap is good and timing is correct. You shouldn't have to pump Mopars to start them up unless the engine is cold or it is super cold outside. You can't pump a bunch of gas into them like Chevies or it will flood them. Good luck.

    If your drill has a slower spindle speed, i would try to slow the rpm alil while keeping the same feed rate speed. I would try? If u feel how u are doing it is better, then do it that way. Just a suggestion. And really, do your research before u use a ridgereamer! I recomend not using one!!! If u have a ridge, u wont hone it out! If u use a ridge reamer, the only way to trully get the ebtire ridge removed u will cut into the bore beyond just removing the ridge, your top ring with then hit the area u cut & it will not be a proper finish there! Ruining your top ring! If u leave the ridge, & reuse the same pistons, u know your top ring will stop at the ridge without hitting it. Its fine. It should be properly bored oversize, or left alone & hone like u are the best u can. Keep the stones below the ridge so the stones stay straight as they can.

      Old GM, Ford, and Mopar engines run fine as a daily driver even when everything isn't perfect. All those worries about exact tolerances matter most if someone is building a race engine. As long as ring gaps and bearing clearances aren't too tight, so tight that they seize up, they'll go another 100,000 if the seals are installed properly.

    OK… First of all do not use gasoline it is not ideal for a lot of reasons. Honing oil is preferred. It’s cheap. You could get it anywhere. Second of all use the appropriate coarsness ball hone it’ll break the glaze without taking off too much material. Sometimes I use a finer course after I first use a course one. Also avoid overhoning you don’t want to takeoff material you just want to break the glaze… Keep on rocking.

    • @jesseduke694
      @jesseduke694 7 месяцев назад

      The 3 finger stone hone is a better choice. It will show any low spots & keep the bore straighter. Ball hone will flex & has no support to keep the bore from taper & will hide low spots that otherwise would show. Ball hone good for cross hatch. Not good for straight, round bores. It just goes with whatever shape the bore is already. Not saying the stone hone will make a unround bore round, but it won't be manipulated so easily. It will tend to try to keep them straight.

    It's a whole lot easier to torque the rack down then compress the rod side of the rocker and measure the clearance at the valve tip. Ideally you should be closer to the bottom of the plunger travel than the top. This will ensure you get full lift even with lifters that bleed down quickly. If you've decked the block or heads,done a valve job, the geometry will change and a new set of push rods may be required to get it right again. But then again what do I know, I'm just some old geezer that's been driving Ford FE's for 50 years.

      @@leviteater Not sure if I understand what you mean exactly. 1/2 inch drive sets may not come with some of the smaller sockets you will need. Also they are more beefy and may be hard to fit on some of your bolts in tight areas. I would get a 3/8 set and just get a 1/2 inch drive torque wrench. 1/2 to 3/8 adapter obviously to use the torque wrench. Hope this answers your question.

    Thanks for these videos man! My great uncle has 3 trucks that have been sitting in his field for 20 years and he said I can have whichever one I want. One is a '66 f250 with this engine in it. I have been learning all I can before I get the truck, and this is helping a ton. Did you buy a certain rebuild kit for this engine, or are you just getting parts as you go?

      No I didn't buy a whole kit. Most kits I saw had pistons also. My engine was borderline needing a bore and I'm on a really strict budget so I just passed a hone through it and bought oversize rings and filed them to fit. Used original pistons.

    it seems like the fresh air tube from the air cleaner housing down to the exhaust manifold chamber is missing for the automatic choke to work.

      Yes it was missing when I got it so I put an electric choke on it.

    it will be great to see how it turns out! I have the same exact car with the 352 autolite 4100 carb on stock intake. Still running points style ignition. Cruise o matic trans with 3.00 gears and p215 65 15 tires. I have a posi rear on it and if i flat punch it from a stand still it will burn rubber for a quick second then move out pretty quick.

      Yeah it wouldn't quite burn rubber. Compression was down pretty good on all cylinders and one was getting a plug fouled. It should once I am through though.
