Dark Roast Espresso Zero Retention - 14 Grams In and Out
I needed to debunk oily dark coffee bean roast and noticed that it stuck on side of funnel so I decided to film and weight it to confirm fact or fiction that there is possibly coffee grind retention.
14 Grams In and Out with
I show you top down view the weight of the whole coffee beans: 14 grams
Then we grind and we have 14 grams on the scale. Yes I did spill some grounded coffee but it was on the scale so it captured the weight.
Then I got a thermometer and Hygrometer to get real data about my environment
1- Temperature 18.4 Celcius or 65.12 Farenheit
2- Humidex level 39%

    Is your espresso coming down from the center of the portafilter? Mine isn’t.. even after leveling my cremina with a level meter and performing all the fancy puck prep techniques. Also the piston spring has corrosion after using for a few months.

    • @CaPheLife
      @CaPheLife 5 дней назад

      Hi, sorry to hear that. Without portafilter, it water coming down strong? From my previous experience, Once machine has been on 60min+, it is clean, if you have channelling, it is because of the coffee grind size. A good universal coffee bean that is available everywhere is the Lavazza Oro, which I like and is my bean to season my new grinder. Piston corrosion would affect taste but I doubt it makes an impact on channeling. I mainly use a spinner to distribute the grounded beans and use the OEM tamper.

    Thanks for this video! I noticed that your temperature probe keeps creeping up from 50 to over 80deg. I assume that results in wildly different brew temps? Is there a way to make sure temp stays more or less constant with the cremina?

    • @CaPheLife
      @CaPheLife Месяц назад

      Thanks for the comment and question . Here is what I learned,, letting it warm up 20min isn’t enough …40c ish temp is not brew temp . I did notice if I open steam wand the pressure bar gauge drop and rebuilds for first start up of the day. Then if wait for 70-80 range, coffee taste best. After like 1-2 pulls, group head stays at 76ish for the rest of the day. Keep in my temperature is tape to the side so it also factors in room temperature of 24c

    hi Tuan Duong, may i ask how long did you wait for your cremina sl after you have placed an order? i understood that the machine is hand-built after the factory has received an order. after watching your cremina sl videos over and over again, i have decided to sell an arm and a leg to get one haha! singapore cremina agent informed me that it will take 2 weeks to a month of waiting for it to be built and shipped. i have read somewhere that the factory builds about 2 cremina a week. if so, i think it may take longer to ship out my machine. i placed an order for the cheaper oldie version of cremina almost a month ago. i m feeling so excited and looking forward to receiving my cremina and therefore my question about the waiting time. thank you 🙏🏼

      Hi, in Canada, I got the same answer that they are custom order….that is from all coffee retailers who can sell the Olympia brand. I was fortunate enough to have bought from the distributor which means, they order skids or pallets of them, incur storage and financing fees but they had them in stock and I got it 2 days later or so. Congratulations on new purchase, just for the coffee taste, it’s worth it. Can’t explain taste with video!

      seeing is believing I guess, it is not as scary as opening a pressure cooker or instant pot. Even in between shots, back to back, if you turn the portafilter slowly after like 5 seconds, there isn't that much pressure as you would fear.

  • @jchng00
    @jchng00 4 месяца назад

    thank you Tuan Duong so much for doing this video. so realistically, with some flushing, steaming of milk, and pulling careful shots. we can easily achieve 8 good shots without depleting the water from the boiler completely?(8 good shots are good enough for me) by the way, is there a minimum level of water required to be left in the boiler to prevent thermal damage? i m also pleased to see that the machine does not tip over when the lever is pulled correctly. thank you so much for the effort to do an unbiased demo. after watching your videos, I m definitely leaning towards getting an olympia cremina instead of a la marzocco home espresso machine.

    • @CaPheLife
      @CaPheLife 4 месяца назад

      I pulled left hand and right hand, no issues. I had conversation with others who owned other brands....LaMarzocco is nice but the deal breaker for me was front loading the water....under the drip tray...They are pretty in all custom colours. Taste wise, you can't go wrong with a lever. I think the 20 shots quoted from manufacturer is straight pull, release. I like to hold mine down 2-20 seconds before I release it. Flushing you don't need if you use a screen disc. I say 14 Cappuccinos or 16 espressos. Steaming does not take much water. I am not sponsored lol BTW, the milk is easier to get to silk level versus my e61. Still scratching my head on that one.

    • @CaPheLife
      @CaPheLife 4 месяца назад

    hi Tuan Duong, thank you for sharing your videos of the olympia cremina. may i ask how many shots of espresso are you able to pull with this work flow? i m asking this is because of the small water capacity of the tank. with the same workflow, will i have enough water to serve a family of 4? do you have a video on how to do a refill of the heated water tank? i understand that the tank will be in high pressure when heated and you have to wait for it to cool down before opening the cap(to do a refill of water). i m curious to know how long will it take for the heated tank to cool down before opening the cap to do a refill? or is there a way to overcome this? thank you for answering my questions on the other video and yes i can hear the spring as it was decompressing in this video(it sounds acceptable to me). thank you. joseph @ singapore

    • @CaPheLife
      @CaPheLife 4 месяца назад

      Thanks for asking these questions, it’s a big concern the water tank. I just gave the e61 machine to my parents since they have more space. 3 liter water reservoir and 1 liter boiler and also straight plumbing was overkill for me. The Cremina can handle family of 4 easily. I did a hot refill once….just open the steam wand to dépressurise it and you can open the lid….yes you can overfill the tank and not cause damage as water will flow out from top of the knob….ill make a video on those and stick a microphone to the machine next week and I am away now

    hi, may i ask is the sounds of the spring compressing/decompressing very loud? i have watched a video of another cremina sl with "annoying loud" sounds of the spring during compression. i m wondering if its because during recording of that video, the "mike" was placed very near to the machine? or do i have to live with this sound if i have purchased the sl model? i also wanted to know if "tipping over or backwards" is unavoidable even if you are a careful user OR its a sign that one is "over extending/over exerting the handle? are you able to pull 9bars without tipping? i m sorry for asking so many questions as i m deciding between the oldie cremina design and the sl model. it is very expensive so i have to make sure i m making the right choice 😅 thank you for sharing your cremina sl videos, i enjoyed it very much.

      Thanks for asking. Sound wise It does not bother me. My other machine e61 with a rotary pump is quieter than most machine but the Olympia SL is quieter than my e61. When I push down, no sound, it’s on the release that it makes small creak sound. Tipping over only happens if you are standing 45 degrees to the side and pull it down. If you stand in front, it won’t tip

The last few months, I've gotten a slight powdering of scale in the Molycote which gives a slight leak after a month. I did a full de-scaling + re-greasing yesterday so, I'm excited to see if the piston seals can hold for more than a month. If so, I'll have to incorporate de-scaling more often (or use water with less calcium).

    Wow what shower do you have as e61 shower doesn’t have any recess or ridge. You need to remove and clean the diffuser as well. Please don’t lube it never never never. There are different thickness based on handle locking lug ware so if you handle goes round too far you could get the next size up to bring handle back to 6 o’clock position. Just wet the seal and it will go in easy.

      @CaPheLife 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks Peter, it is the stock ECM Technika V shower basket, may be it's an ECM thing? Ridge helps big time. I replaced like for like thickness. Since new Day 1, my handle always went in at 7-8 o clock and lock at 6. It's food safe lube so I'm not concerned but yeah I'll try just water. Diffuser was removed like 2 months prior and dropped in cafiza solution. It was gunky at that time. What you saw was like brown stains I guess. Love the e61 for the simplicity in servicing it. Based on my usage, I'm still surprise gasket lasted 2+ years.

      Thanks Peter, I learned something new today! I google this so other don't need to! What kind of material is Viton? fluorocarbon rubber As mentioned, Viton is DuPont's (now Chemours) brand name for fluorocarbon rubber. This is a synthetic rubber and fluoropolymer elastomer and is commonly used for O-rings and other molded or extruded parts.

      @@CaPheLife Ah, about training, I was just talking about coordinating my elbow to push down the lever, at the same time as I turn on the steam with the hand and hold the pitcher to steam milk with the other .. I don't have enough hands to hold a camera too. :-) I have a couple of videos about servicing the Cremina on my youtube page, but I'm not talking over those .. I mostly use them to remind myself what I did and how .. and when 🙂
