Melting steel with solar power
Clip from James May's Big Ideas where a bunch of hippies burn and melt stuff with their 'solar furnace', oh and it has something to do with making petrol out of thin air.

RIP Richard Roundtree, I really hope he saw this sketch, I’m sure he would’ve loved it!
Brilliant thanks fast show an ode to Richard roundtree the true shaft
1:13 the camera zooming in, the down pace of the music, and the ball just rolling along is just perfect.
Who's the black snooker player Whose opponents haven't got a prayer?
If only it ended with shaft saying You ain't seen me , right
This came into my head, needed to watch it,remember the first time i saw it.still funny now 😂👌
Genius
This is a masterclass in editing, camerawork and sound as well as being bloody funny.
Classic fast show
Nowadays this would be concidered as rasist.
Racists tend to call other people racist.
...no it wouldn't. You're making something up to be angry at. It's not healthy!
A brilliant sketch. It must had taken many takes for Colin McFarlane to get the shots right.
What is this genius?
Fucking classic fast show
That cat Shaft is a bad mother
Shut your mouth!
What I absolutely love about this old skit, is when you’ve got a world champion player like Steve Davis whose game enough to play along, he would obviously need to be the one in the sketch, putting on the black glove, setting up and then taking the really tricky shots, for cropped filming and later editing. Like those swerves, for example, and the awesome six-cushion pink at the end. In fact you can clearly see it’s his arm and not Shaft’s black turtle-neck at 0:45. Makes it all the funnier. What a great guy!
Too bad it's racist with black face...
@@sakurasonics19 Black actor Colin McFarlane played Shaft.
@@JimFinnis the point is that they used a white person to play the sketch, instead of the black member that they hired for the show. It's whit person with black make up, which is not ok
@@sakurasonics19 Eh? It's not a white actor in blackface. It's Colin McFarlane, who is black. There is no blackface in this sketch. Here's Colin on Twitter talking about it: twitter.com/colinmcfarlane/status/1279138334649061378
Shaft rules, plus he has a great ability for break building with his carefully crafted shot making decisions.
Great sketch, thanks for uploading.
Pretty sure that's not steel... more like aluminum.
"Lunchtime hot dog snack"? How very British. LUNCHTIME HOT DOG SNACK HERE! GET YOUR LUNCHTIME HOT DOG SNACK OVER HERE! METER LONGS! POLISH! GET 'EM WHILE THEY'RE HOT!
That could probably melt titanium
Mythbusters, you let me down on this one.
An engineer or physics teacher can help me? Is there a formula of solar concentration? if direct sunlight of 2,5,10, 50 mirrors to the same point, how many ° C increase in point? How do I find the temperature that increases the focal point?
what number of mirror ?
jet fuel can't melt steel beams yet the sun can
send this to the mythbusters
SOLAR POWER CAN'T MELT STEEL BEAMS (just trolling)
Sun beams CAN melt steel beams!
Stell won't melt right away like that. Aluminium does. And about mythbuster, there are using material based on archimedes age. The rig is simpler with wood based and normal mirror. just sayin
I am the only one that think that that's not the full power of the magnifying mirror?
It's not stell. The color of the melt iron and stell is bright red(Melting temprature=1400-1600). It is just aluminium (melting temprature=660).
RIP Traditional American Hotdog Snack
So was this Archimedes' Burning Mirror?
TIL the sun did 9/11
solar power can't melt steel beams
captain slow did something fast? WOW, P.S. sorry about Jeremy
But can it cook a pizza bagel?
It should be changed to James May's big ass lie. LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE. That's aluminum, not steel. Steel melts orange, aluminum melts silver
Could Solar Thermal Energy give us independence from fossil fuels? Heat is as important as electricity (if not more), it is neccessary for big part of industrial processes.
It seems some people are mistaking 2400 degrees C for degrees F. 2400C is 4352 Fahrenheit. And those of you thinking it's fake because Mythbusters did it...sometimes, Mythbusters suck at making/testing things. If a 5cm magnifying glass can burn wood, I'm pretty sure many square metres of mirror can melt steel.
Steel melted by concentrated photons.nice. 2008, do we have petrol from solar furnaces now in almost 2015. NO. so James, go to the back of the queue. Mashed potato, apple pie, no custard.
It looks like an supervillains weapon from a James Bond movie.
The intense white / yellow glow doesn't show, because it melts so fast and the camera adjusts the luminosity. You can see the surrounding area going darker instead. And there is seemingly white near the hole. Here they say that solar furnace can get as hot as 3500 C, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_furnace which melts steel.
@Luiz Np I would agree with you just from the first few seconds, but later on the video you can see the pooling molten metal glow yellow. I melted aluminum for castings before, its silvery with a bit of light red glow sometimes, but I never seen it glow yellow before. But I also never seen carbon steel melt like mecury before either, it always goes through the "iron rainbow" of straw yellow, then orange, red, bright yellow, and then white. Maybe its a camera issue?
Post-oil society of the future, getting stuff made at the local blacksmith with a solar forge.
Hey, its Capt Slow!
wow this is awesome...we have try this
how are you , If anyone else is uncover the most effective secrets for solar power try Banfan Genie Solar Power (just google it)? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my colleague got amazing success with it - saved a lot of money
looks like mythbusters screwed up their experiment with solar panels.
economical, feasable, eco friendly electric cars are around for quite some time (and i'm no talking about crappy hybrids). yet they are not mainstream because oil companies buy all the patents required (especially the ones regarding the batteries) and prevent anyone from using them. instead they convinced states like US to invest in hydrogen cars tecnology which is extremely ineffective, expensive and unpractical (atleast for the next decades).
Electric cars polute more and are less efficient than a combustion car.
Best fuel is alcohol. Can be produced from CO2 and water.
