Archer 17pdr at AusArmourFest 2024. British SPG.
As the planned invasion of Normandy slated for mid-1944 approached British armoured and anti-tank units became concerned about the capability of their main guns to engage the increasingly heavy German tanks being employed in North Africa and on the Eastern Front. Vehicles such as the Tiger I and Panther were armoured more heavily than it was thought the standard anti-tank armaments on the British tanks could routinely cope with. These included the 6pdr (57mm), 75mm M3 of the Shermans that made up many British tank units, and the QF 75mm of the Cromwell and Churchill. The replacement anti-tank gun for the 6pdr had been in development since Nov-1940, resulting in the QF 17pdr (76.2mm) anti-...

The German Army was mostly Infantry formations moving on foot and with horses, trucks, and half-tracks for logistics. During the Invasion of France, only 10% of German Divisions were mobile Panzer units with tanks and mounted infantry. Hence regular Infantry units needed fire support that could keep up. In 1935 General Erich von Manstein proposed to the German Army Chief of the General Staff th...

In early 2023 I made a video of the Churchill Crocodile flame tank that’s at the Australian Army Tank Museum, so take a look at that if you’re interested. This is a slightly early variant that was similarly bought to Australia late in WWII, initially for trails to assess suitability for use in the tropics. In the end 51 Churchills were brought to Australia but they never saw combat. British Tan...

When developing armoured doctrine in the 1930’s the Germany Army identified the need for fast moving Panzer units to contain their own organic fire support capability to help neutralise fixed emplacements and heavily dug in infantry. The types of anti-tank guns that would be carried by most vehicles in an armour unit would be selected based on their ability to fire armour piercing rounds that a...

When Germany launched the invasion of Russia at the end of June 1941, by some estimates the Soviets had about 24,000 tanks in their inventory. Way less than half were ever truly deployable and many were obsolescent. High speed tanks like the BT-5 and BT-7, and the slower T26 were available in their tens of thousands, but were generally very lightly armoured (maximum 13-15mm of steel) and were v...

Heavy tank design concepts were progressed by German Army Weapons Agency (Heereswaffenamt) starting from 1937 but deprioritized for production in favour of medium tank ramp up. Heavy tank development gained new urgency in May 1940 after the experience in France highlighted inability of 3.7cm KwK-36 L/45 to deal with heavier tanks like the Char B1 Bis. A single French tank in the Ardennes destro...

The M26 was designed as an update and replacement for the M4 Sherman Medium Tank, and to continue the linage of tanks that were made by the US that started back with the M3 Medium tank that entered production in 1941. The M3 & M4 medium, when introduced mid war were state of the art in terms of armour thickness and main armament, and could take on most enemy tanks encountered on the battlefield...

Prior to WW2, German Tank leader Heinz Guderian had predicted the need for highly mobile self-propelled anti-tank vehicles, later known as Panzerjäger (tank hunters), within the German order of Battle. The towed-type of anti-tank gun developed for use in the Anti-Tank Companies within Panzer Divisions would be outpaced by fast moving Panzer Companies, and would be too slow to effectively respon...

Really great information. Your camera work is very good, very steady. I look foreword to your next video.
Thanks!
Another great video thanks for sharing 👍
Another good and informative addition thanks Salame
Dream car
👍👍🔥
Great video 👍
Why do you have promoting banner of the ruSSian game WoT in your exhibition ? So ruSSian money for your museum ??? Realy noble 🤢
Amazing vehicle. This one doesn't have those horizontal mesh skirts over the fenders to guard against anti-tank grenades. Do you know if those mesh covers were strong enough to hold a person's weight? Could the crew stand and walk over them, like a scaffolding?
I expect they would be strong enough to walk on. The wire mesh on the skirts is quite heavy gauge and the supporting frames are also quite substantial.
Beautiful tank and presentation. Thank you!
Great video. However, Krupp is pronounced 'kroop' and cupola is pronounced 'kyoopola'. These words are often mispronounced and I think it's important, when recording history, to also record proper pronunciation. Thanks.
Good talk. Thank you for not calling it an infantry support tank.
The main Germany battle tank of WW2! A nice report!
Excellent information. Keep at it.
Great video 👍
Interesting how shurtzen has been moved a little higher and is now commonly called a cope cage.. coping with different things of course, but in step with the saying that history doesn't always repeat but (often) it rhymes..
Another great video You must spend a lot of time researching about the tanks in your videos
100% agree, i have been enjoying them too... Perhaps the channel needs a go fund me or something to raise funds for a trip to Bovington? Salame would have endless footage then! I am sure many other subs would kick in as i would ! lol.
@@jaredstaniland9117 that would be awesome and I would have to go to help him I have a few friends over there would love to catch up with them and go to the tank museum I also have a friend who was a trainee at the tank school when it was still a tank school
Excellent presentation
Nice Video 👏
Very good presentation.
Another great video and info keep up the great work
awesome! have been waiting for your next instalment, great commentary once again..
Lovely. Only just 1:20 medium tank? That LT in the name LT vz. 38 literally stands for Light Tank so...
It was a heavy tank, not a medium.
As always very informative.
Start forward , no guff : thanks
The best tank of WW2
My favorite tank destroyer, reliable and proven chassis , low silhouette, excellent gun....
My Grandfather was S/sgt Joesph H Wells of the 5th AAF 380th BG 531st bomb squadron 💣 My grandfather was stationed @ Long field in Fenton. He was on the B-24 Sad-Sac as a left waist gunner. He was on the 1st Strike on Bailikpan! And had a kill to his credit when they were jumped on a mission going by east Timmor. I waih that the Collings foundation had kept their Liberator sill airworty.
The "Hinterhalt" camo on it looks awesome. I think modern tanks should reuse that camo.
Another good video Salame - cheers
I am recently new to your subscription but find your knowledge of the subject matter to be very impressive. I am in the process of going back and playing all your videos. Very entertaining and informative. Thanks from California.
Great video👍
Another great presentation, keep up the great work 🙂
Your videos are fantastic I like all the information you pass on in your videos keep up the great work
Your effort to learn about the subject you are describing is commendable. I am sure it takes a lot of your time to put all the information together. I look forward to your videos as you cover a lot of Aus Armor equipment they have not talked about.
Been working on this B 24 for 20 years plus had the wing tips stolen some years back fuselage came from rural Victoria and I believe two sets of wings where obtained The memorial itself is very interesting as you see bits and pieces of the aircraft are shrawn about the hanger BUT I FEAR the possibility of it ever getting to even static status is another 20 years away There are only abour 6 complete airframes inexistince and only two airworthy
Must see content, I wish I had seen them before attending AusArmourFest 2024, keep up the great work 🙂
I really like your videos so much info
Excellent presentation, thank you.
Greetings from California. I have found your videos very informative combined with with good camera work. You explain each video with a wealth of information in a logical order. Good job.
Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback.
Dont know about anyone else but the sound gave me wood :)
An excellent series you're doing for us from AAF - nice supplement to Workshop Wednesdays - thanks for doing these mate - appreciation from Canberra :)
Thanks! The Australian Army Tank Museum will reopen early 2025 and I look forward to doing some more from there, too.
Who was driving the Panther that day?
Either Nick or Phil. They've been known to swap glasses to confuse people. Only their mother can tell them apart.
I saw you there filming and tried to keep out of your way, very informative I wish I had said hello, now subscribed I am looking forward to seeing all your content, keep up the great work. 🙂
Thank you for sharing!
Excellent video, subbed 👍
If you want to pronounce it correctly, dont call it störm call it Sturm the u is pronounced like to ou in you. the S is pronounced like the sh in sh.t 🙂 So you can say sh.. whitout the i and you without the y and there you go ^^
Looks like its just missing the Muzzle Break. Fantastic piece of kit there The 105mm gun was pretty effective in urban environs.
The StuH 42 mounted a variant of the 10.5 cm leFH 18 howitzer, which was modified to be electrically fired and fitted with a muzzle brake in this vehicle. However the muzzle brake was often omitted due to the scarcity of resources later in the war.
