DCDC Chargers - be careful what you buy
Charging you caravan or camper trailer batteries as you drive along has become a necessity if you do a lot of free or off grid camping and as battery systems in caravans have greater capacity to support the ever increasing demand for mains powered electrical stuff run by inverters as well as lights etc. While solar provides a significant portion of the battery charging normally - a few days of rain or heavily overcast weather will set you back significantly and charging as you drive along makes sense. So lets have a look at issues with DC to DC Chargers for caravans/camper trailers.

What to buy if my 12V fridge dies

Waeco CF40/50/60 Digital Upgrade

When you think of a 12V camping or portable fridge the Waeco CF series is probably the one that comes to mind along side the classic Engel fridge. The electronic parts for these fridges are becoming rare or obsolete, if not impossible to get as stock of spare parts begin to run out. I suspect that Dometic (now the owner of Waeco since 2007) no longer manufactures these parts as the fridges are ...

    I can't imagine running such a long thick cable. Not to mention having so little control over charging rates if the battery state(s) are non-optimal. At that point we might as well just connect the vehicle battery bus to an inverter controlled by the ignition and run AC to the trailer instead of DC. Then just have a programmable AC charger in the trailer. Victron sells several whos amperages can be programmed. Problem solved, and much smaller cables can be used. -Matt

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 Месяц назад

      Thanks Matt. Its quite the norm here to run 10mm sq cable to the caravan battery and it works fine as long as the DCDC Charger has the ability to compensate for the cable loss as most good quality chargers do - which is the point of this video. Good luck trying to find somewhere to mount an inverter in a modern 4WD tow vehicle these days in close proximity to the battery. There is little space for anything to be installed much less a bulky inverter.

    • @junkerzn7312
      @junkerzn7312 Месяц назад

      @@timterry8714 The amperages you were throwing do not represent very much power, less than 500W. How quickly do you want the trailer to be able to charge ? From the diagrams it looked like 250W was fine for your purposes. That's like 1A @ 240VAC or 2A @ 120VAC. 1mm^2 (17 AWG) cable to the trailer and a tiny little inline glass fuse. Judging from a quick amazon search, we're talking quite small... about the size of a small paperback book it looks like, for something in the 250W range. Perhaps not entirely suitable buta commercial version wouldn't be much different. Also, don't a lot of these vehicles already come with inverters as stock these days? Well, think about it. It seems silly to run such a low voltage 10+ meters. -Matt

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 Месяц назад

      Yes you could do it that way. Then run a standard mains power charger in the caravan. However virtually every caravan and camper here have dcdc chargers installed and that's the point of this video.

  • @jamesalles139
    @jamesalles139 Месяц назад

    Thanks for the video, all good points. As _my_ best practice, I would put the DC/DC charger as close to the engine as practical - in this case near the tongue of the trailer. Specify the cabling to the 2nd battery properly to minimize voltage drop - the current will be limited and easier to manage. That voltage drop can be compensated for by the DC/DC charger when equipped with a battery voltage sense lead. Also, pay attention to the ambient temperature when under the hood.

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 Месяц назад

      Moving the DCDC Charger closer to the start battery in the vehicle moves the problem from the input to the output and will result in slower charging of the caravan battery and not fully charging in a reasonable time if at all due to cable voltage drop - also what about if its a combined DCDC and Solar charger - the panels are on the caravan not the vehicle. The DCDC Chargers are (or should be ) designed to overcome the input cable loss not the output. This is the whole point of this Video.

    • @jamesalles139
      @jamesalles139 Месяц назад

      @@timterry8714 The point of the DC-DC charger is to limit current draw on the input while, as you state, boost the voltage to properly charge the AUX battery. This does not eliminate the need to properly engineer the system with adequate cable size, which is arguably easier to do on the caravan chassis. When I said "near the tongue of the trailer", I meant ON the trailer chassis, just toward the front. Thanks for the video

      Not that I have seen of late. It seems all the manufacturers have downsized to the minimum they can get away with where as in the past there was limited choice and they had to fit what was available from Danfoss/Secop which was the BD35 and BD50 and the Chinese copies initially simply followed suit. The Chinese now build any size the manufacturer specifies. As I say the I think places like Australia, Africa and other very hot climate countries only represent maybe 5% of the global market so they dont care if its "not fit for purpose" for our country.

      @timterry8714 6 месяцев назад

      Yes they will get down to the correct temp for a fridge and even at !00F or 43C if the insulation is good the fridge will operate as a freezer also. The problem with most modern fridges is that the manufacturers have reduced the size of the compressor significantly, use "expander foam" rather than proper cool room type insulation in the walls of the case (no thermal insulation properties) and on some of the larger capacity fridges (a good example is the one in the background of this video!) the cooling fan and condenser have been reduced significantly. No cost saving to the customer I might add! The result is that many of the large 75 and 95ltr dual zone fridges run almost continuously above about 95F or 36C. No good for the hotter countries like Australia.

    You talk so much about all the ancillary equipment, I'm not sure how this was a solar panel comparison when you don't mention the most important information being how many Watts the panels put out? I bought a 200w Sunyee which sounds like a great product going off the sales info, sadly the best I can achieve out of it was around 80w and about 6a.

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 3 месяца назад

      Hi Grant, well I guess I was focused on the ability to charge the batteries so the primary interest in my mind was the current these put out after the solar controller (i.e.the battery charging amps available). These panels never put out the wattage specified as its a really not a "real world" measurement in my mind. The rated wattage of a solar panel indicates its electricity output when tested under ideal laboratory conditions (STC). In real-life installations, actual solar panel wattage depends on external factors such as sunshine and ambient temperature. www.researchgate.net/figure/Standard-test-condition-STC_tbl1_326014498

      No, I removed the fan altogether as its noisy and not required. I did speak to Bushman about this. The Danfoss compressor will run hot in hot weather but they are designed to do this. The conditions they operate in boats and vehicle mounted 12V car fridges with little or no ventilation at high ambient temperatures would surprise you. But they not only work for years in these conditions but manage to maintain the internal temperature correctly. Mine has worked seamlessly for the past couple of years and I have no doubt it will continue to do so.

    I've had a Breville Bambino for a few years. Yesterday, I received shipment of a Bluetti AC180 power station, which has an output of 1800 watts. The Bambino requires 1560 watts, according to the manufacturer's specs. Should be a slam dunk, but it doesn't work. The pump works, but the heating element doesn't, so I get cold, really horrible "espresso". Can't really call it espresso. I'm so bummed. I spent $900 for AC180 just so I could make espresso off grid. Any suggestions?

      Well looks like you have a dodgy Bluetti as the reviews I've seen indicate they can accept a peak load up to 2500 watts and continuous loads up to 2200 watts. So I think you should return it under warranty.

    I have been trying for over a year and have had various technical guys look at the DC to DC charger..... no one got it installed in my travel trailer (carvan) working correctly. Your video solved the problem. The final missing piece is the grounding of the negative. This allowed the LC to reduce the amps by 50 %. Finally, I can tell Renogy to close their file.... and watch your video.😊. Guess the Aussies are smarter than all the Canadian tekkies.😅

    Hi Tim. Understand this was a while ago but I have noticed you moved to the Bushman DC190L. Did this fit in the same cavity as the 8551, and how is it or did it go? How much battery and solar did you go to to run it?

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 9 месяцев назад

      Best move I ever made! No the Bushman is taller and also a bit wider and only just fitted in the space I had between a wall and the back of the dining seat. I had to modify the overhead cupboard to make it shorter and enlarge the opening width. The fridge works brilliantly and hasn't missed a bit. With minimum reliance on electronics and no fan means its absolutely silent and the excellent insulation (which is why its wider and taller) realises power consumption is as low as can be achieved with good performance from the Danfoss BD50 compressor. So many manufacturers are reducing compressor capacity and significantly compromising performance of the latest model fridges. Anyway I thoroughly recommend the Bushman DC190. Cheers Tim
