Waeco CF40/50/60 Digital Upgrade
When you think of a 12V camping or portable fridge the Waeco CF series is probably the one that comes to mind along side the classic Engel fridge.
The electronic parts for these fridges are becoming rare or obsolete, if not impossible to get as stock of spare parts begin to run out. I suspect that Dometic (now the owner of Waeco since 2007) no longer manufactures these parts as the fridges are over 10 years old. In all fairness they have been excellent in supporting their fridges well beyond model run out and much better than most distributors in Australia. However these fridge are great so dont throw them in the dump!
I have a solution for extending the life of these great fridges for many...

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 12 дней назад

      Yes they will get down to the correct temp for a fridge and even at !00F or 43C if the insulation is good the fridge will operate as a freezer also. The problem with most modern fridges is that the manufacturers have reduced the size of the compressor significantly, use "expander foam" rather than proper cool room type insulation in the walls of the case (no thermal insulation properties) and on some of the larger capacity fridges (a good example is the one in the background of this video!) the cooling fan and condenser have been reduced significantly. No cost saving to the customer I might add! The result is that many of the large 75 and 95ltr dual zone fridges run almost continuously above about 95F or 36C. No good for the hotter countries like Australia.

    I've had a Breville Bambino for a few years. Yesterday, I received shipment of a Bluetti AC180 power station, which has an output of 1800 watts. The Bambino requires 1560 watts, according to the manufacturer's specs. Should be a slam dunk, but it doesn't work. The pump works, but the heating element doesn't, so I get cold, really horrible "espresso". Can't really call it espresso. I'm so bummed. I spent $900 for AC180 just so I could make espresso off grid. Any suggestions?

    Hi Tim. Understand this was a while ago but I have noticed you moved to the Bushman DC190L. Did this fit in the same cavity as the 8551, and how is it or did it go? How much battery and solar did you go to to run it?

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 3 месяца назад

      Best move I ever made! No the Bushman is taller and also a bit wider and only just fitted in the space I had between a wall and the back of the dining seat. I had to modify the overhead cupboard to make it shorter and enlarge the opening width. The fridge works brilliantly and hasn't missed a bit. With minimum reliance on electronics and no fan means its absolutely silent and the excellent insulation (which is why its wider and taller) realises power consumption is as low as can be achieved with good performance from the Danfoss BD50 compressor. So many manufacturers are reducing compressor capacity and significantly compromising performance of the latest model fridges. Anyway I thoroughly recommend the Bushman DC190. Cheers Tim

    Hi Tim , I run 2 small fridges a 54 litre and a 15 litre console fridge , the console fridge runs permanently and sits in the tray of my work ute (2 yrs old in all weather no cover) and has never missed a beat, the second fridge 54 litre is only on the vehicle when camping so beer in the small one food in the bigger one, recently my dc to dc control panel showed an error ( connection ) both fridges had error codes and wouldn’t run , both are Anderson plug connected but the bigger of the 2 fridges has a high med low switch where the plug connects to the fridge? This fridge is 24/7 connected to mains power at home when we are not camping , should this be set at a high med or low setting for 12 volt? , the fridge is a glacio so it’s a cheap Chinese brand but has never let me down in 4 years. Would be interested for your opinion. Great video very informative.👍 Regards Gary.

    • @timterry8714
      @timterry8714 4 месяца назад

      The first test I would do is run them on mains power and if they work OK then the problem is vehicle related. The mains power maintains a higher and more consistant voltage to the fridge compressor. Similarly fridges often work when the vehicle engine is running but show up errors or won't start with the engine off - again a voltage drop problem. So try the mains power test, if that proves the fridge runs OK then problem is the battery, wiring or connections in the vehicle. That sounds like a vehicle power issues as both fridges showed a fault.

    I run domestic fridges off an inverter. You need to use a Victron inverter which has a standby current of less than 1 watt and the 800 watt Victron will start big fridges and freezers fine. If the fridge has a thermostat use the standby mode on the inverter and the inverter turns itself on when the fridge starts. If the fridge is a modern 3 phase motor the inverter must be left on all the time. The higher star rating (3 or4) means the fridge probably uses 3 phase. These are more efficient. Another thing I do, is usw Westinghouse bar freezers (4 star) and turn in the screw on the thermostat about 5 or 6 turns. This makes the freezer into a fridge (0-4C) and because of the insulation it only draws 10A/h per day at 12v.

    Very informative. I can see a great business opportunity opening up here as more & more off-grid people realise the benefits of avoiding the DC-AG-DC pathway. One thing that could be tidied up is your quoting of energy usage. As I guess you know energy is measured in watt-hours. Power is measured in watts. The relationship between speed & distance is a useful analogy.

    Your comments are turned off on the install review of your Renogy 50amp DC-DC MPPT charge/control/monitor. First , the little green BTS input is for your Battery Temp Sensor and the BVS is your Battery Voltage Sensor for using an external unit OR some Smart Alternators have a connection. Now to clarify, as a Renogy Ambassador- The new units have software updated to calculate the Input and allow the Alternator to charge at a full 50amps However with your unit you will find if you install a CUTOFF switch from your Solar PV+ input, it will automatically charge at the Full 50amp rate when there is No Input from Solar PV+ Maybe you can copy/paste this comment into that video OR update your original video and/or notes to help folks in this regards. Cheers & Take Care

      Unless they have lowered the ALT input voltage required to achieve the full 50 Amps output (as is the case with the 40A DCDC charger - see my other Vid) its not going to help. The problem here that I was highlighting is that the ALT input voltage cannot drop below 13.2 volts to achieve the rated output and this is virtually impossible to achieve for a caravan or trailer situation due to cable loss and the practicable and manageable cable size. to output 50 amps the DCDC charger requires about 65 Amps input to overcome losses incurred through the charger. One of the primary objectives of a DCDC charger is to overcome voltage drop that will occur over 10 mtrs or 30' of cable plus connectors, etc. This was a failing in this product and may have been addressed and corrected in later versions.

    Hi Tim Thank you for the video. My son has an old caravan and is wanting a 12v retro fridge. Impossible to buy in Australia. He is keen on the SMEG 38L FAB5RCR5AU. I am an electronic technician (no refrigeration experience) so I am hoping that I can do it for him. Do you think that model is suitable? Thank you :)

      As long as it's not frost free with cyclic defrost, fan, defroster element. It's got have an evaporator plate and old style mechanical thermostat as I explain in the video.

      Hi Tim @@timterry8714 Does the refrigerant gas need to be drained and then the pipes welded and the refrigerant refilled?

    • @timterry8714

      Gas recovered from the system, compressor changed out, plumbing reconnected, pressure tested, vacuumed, nitrogen run through it, regassed, wiring changed for 12V an adapted to existing fridge wiring and components, etc

      Run it with a Victron 800w inverter simple and low current draw

    What brings me here is the desire to have a very tiny freezer (maybe a liter) for on the road smoothie ingredients.

    Hi Tim, I have an Evercool 30ltr 12v fridge. Turns on, compressor starts after the recommended 2min start up process but never gets cold. Digital temp is working as it changes with the ambient temp. No error codes (red error light not on either) Green light on Fan not running either, but figure that comes on with a temp signal thermistor? As required After running for a while the compressor discharge pipe doesn't feel hot. Just whole unit slightly warm from running overnight. Can you suggest a fix to look at? Thanks Gavin

      Hi Gavin, possibly the fan has failed and that has caused the system to get excessively hot and you've lost refrigerant so now it doesn't cool. You won't get an error code in that situation and the compressor will run full time. But look, difficult ultimately to know without looking at it. Oh and the fan should run whenever the compressor runs.

    Great video thx. I have done some of your mods but my fridge blatently only cools freezer and not fridge! I have removed and tipped upside down like you do with these 3 way fridges but still no joy. Do you know if the fridge is on a seperate control?? It has a sensor near that cooling fins so was wondering if that would control things somehow?? Any help by anyone would be appreciated as this is driving me nuts and I don't want to have to go and buy a new fridge.

      Hi, look it worked OK at home but after this I did a long trip and never performed well except from switch on till I drove away - then it just went backwards everyday. I gave up and replaced it with a compressor fridge and haven't looked back. Cheers Tim

      So what fridge did you end up replacing it with? I have only found the Dometic RMD 10.5XS and the Thetford T2175C compressor fridge that are the same size to fit in hole without any mods.@@timterry8714

    Hi. Will it be possible for the 220v converter to 12v internal power supply to cause these type of issues?
