Don't break anything, remove the little screws on the plastic cover (which you could just discard) use a very small screwdriver or something similar, stick it in the small hole on the socket to depress the clip and remove your socket.

DON'T BREAK THE PACKAGING!!! It's not meant to be broken; you just need to find an object small enough, like a 3mm or 7/64 Allen Wrench to stick in the holes over each socket, found on the front face of the packaging. First remove the 5 screws on the back and open it up. THEN you can pop the sockets off correctly (with an Allen Wrench) without breaking anything so you can keep reusing the package as a holder, like it's clearly meant to serve as. Don't break it, keep the sockets on there and hang it up or something, just keep them together or else you could risk losing one from disorganization.

This is the correct answer: Remove the back piece after taking out the screws. Throw that part away. Then use a small screwdriver through the hole in the socket to depress the catch mechanism. When re-inserting the socket, be sure to put the hole in the correct side, and it will be held in place by the mechanism.

I really can’t stand the tree thing. It makes it a pain to remove the sockets. I’m going to order a socket organizer.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was wondering how to make it easy to remove them each time I needed to grab one. The way they come packaged from the store must be for security reasons. Of course, not that anyone would steal a socket or two from the package in the store.

  • @kotcher69

Read comments first, push a flat punch in the hole of the socket to release it, its a shame there are no instructions on the package to show you. Use this method if you intend to hang the sockets always or use the one where you push a flat punch in the hole to release the sockets.

Thats ok but if you are doing a job that becomes a real pain. A good amount of time doing the job itself is a hassle. Don't need to add another step to frustrate and slow you down.

This video is a great example of well-intended, but incorrect "how-to" info. Here's a little more detail on why, for anyone who's interested. I was also a bit baffled by the packaging of this HF product, and went to RUclips to try and figure out how to get the darn sockets off of it. Each of the sockets is locked in place on its corresponding 1/2" plug by a plastic tab with a post on the end that pops up into the little hole at the drive end of each socket when the socket is pressed onto its plug. You release the tab/post by either pushing an awl or other probe into the hole, or by using a small, flat-head screwdriver to go through the socket's 1/2" opening and press the tab down that way. The latter way will reduce/prevent damage to the post, and I found that to be the easier of the two ways to release the socket. When you're putting the socket back on the tree, if you don't line up the hole with this lock tab/post, the socket could fall off the tree when the assembly is turned sideways. By cutting off all the lock tabs, the maker of this video ensured that the only thing left holding the sockets on the tree is the friction/contact of the socket with the 1/2" plastic plug it's hung on ... IMO, making the tree functionally useless. This packaging is DESIGNED to be re-used indefinitely, and is "ok," but anyone who uses their sockets a lot will probably consider it more hassle/aggravation than it's worth, and just replace it with something simpler, e.g., a common socket tray. For example, I found that even when I was pushing the tab down the right way, I was still struggling to pull a lot of the sockets off their plugs, but that did get easier after I pulled each one off/put it back on a few times. The rear panel should just be left loose or removed entirely, because when it's in place with all the screws inserted, you can't press the lock tabs down at all ... their movement is blocked by corresponding little nubs on the inner side of the rear panel ... obviously designed only to keep all the sockets secured on the tree until the whole set gets to the customer/end-user. Removal of the rear panel has no effect on the functionality of the tree/lock tabs ... just makes it possible for the tree/lock tabs to be used as intended.

Kudos to original FYI video for his sincere attempt to assist the community, but yeah...a bit misguided. Discovered, the same as, DMR Technology, that the "tree" is designed for continued use. Just remove the screws, open the back, which when closed "locks" the securing nubs in place, and depress the nub thru the hole at the base of the socket to release it. Voila.

DON'T BREAK OFF THOSE TABS! Flip the affair over and remove the screws as shown in this video, and toss in the garbage. Then remove the plastic flap that the screws were holding down by pulling the two little pins inward and lifting off at the hinge (pivot) point at the handle. Throw it away, also, it is no longer needed. Flip the affair over so that it is face up (the label, etc., shows). Notice that the holes in the sockets are all showing - this is how they are stored with the little socket holes facing up, remember it. To remove the sockets, one at a time, push a thin screwdriver or the likes into the hole and push down, essentially releasing the socket from the plastic lock formed in the plastic tabs I said not to break off. When finished using the socket, return it to its place, with the hole facing up and insert into its holding place. Done...locked in. Repeat each time you need a socket. And be careful, those larger sized sockets could break a toe or two if they fall off before you secure them properly. After they are locked in place they are not apt to fall out.

You don't have to remove anything, just depress the locking tab holding the socket in from the front and pull them off. Or, you could buy a socket rail and do this.

I bought both the metric and sae set of these and followed your advice on one set. It worked to get the sockets off but I discovered that you have then removed the mechanism to keep them form falling off the holder. I discovered after I ruined the first set how it is designed to use. Each socket has a hole. Just insert the proper sized screw driver, push in and the socket comes right off. Replace the socket with the hole facing up as they came and they will lock back on and will not then fall off. Simple when you see how it really works

Like everything at Harbor Freight there seems to be lots of versions, I bought the SAE and Metric deep sockets at the same time and one could be done the way you describe (no middle piece to remove and the other I had to follow the method in the video.

This is the correct answer: Remove the back piece after taking out the screws. Throw that part away. Then use a small screwdriver through the hole in the socket to depress the catch mechanism. When re-inserting the socket, be sure to put the hole in the correct side.

Also, I found if you use a flat screwdriver at the base of the socket you can depress the clip and remove the socket. Not cool when doing a job but the sockets are secure on their holder. I'm considering investing in a socket holder case instead.

  • @KM-bv3fp

so helpful! thanks for the video. I was concerned that the sockets would fall off if I took out the clips like you show. Do they stay reasonably or do the fall off the holder if you tip it?
