The LS Engine's ACHILLES HEEL! Let's fix it!
I love this family of engines, but if there's one thing that seems to give them problems, and seems to consistently be difficult to obtain good new replacements. It's the hydraulic lifters. Here's how I recondition my good used lifters for another shot at life!

  • @hardball107
    @hardball107 4 дня назад

    Good video and explanation of how the lifter works but in my experience over many years and engines, that tick is from wear between the pushrod end and the seat in the rocker body. For some reason the pushrod will stop spinning and the tip of the pushrod will wear a football shaped pattern into the seat in the rocker body and the pushrod ball, it will wear excessively creating lots of clearance. I've found it so often that I stock pushrods and new rockers. The seat in the lifter doesn't wear because the movement is in one direction only, basically static. The rocker end of the pushrod rocks in the seat as it operates creating the wear pattern. As for your lifter repair, I have found that also and IMHO beating on the already fragile rollers with anything isn't doing the needles any favors, they are only half bearings and the needles at the apex of the bearing take all the load repeatedly and we know what happens when they fail, I just replace them as they are found. Cheap insurance.

    I've got a 5.3 from an 02 silverado and want to drop my 5.3 into an 04 silverado with the 4.3l 5spd will it be easy going

    • @MohawkMotors
      @MohawkMotors 9 дней назад

      I wouldn't say easy going, but you can do it. Your 02 5.3 should be drive by cable just like your 04 silverado, BUT the 2002 pcm won't work in the 04 silverado and the 04 fuse panel won't work with your 02 engine harness. The 02 fuse panel won't work with your 04 truck harnesses. There's a couple ways to get around it. You can hunt down a PCM from an 04 Van that originally had a V8 to run it, use the 04 fuse panel and move around some pins in the 02 engine harness connector and you'll have to get some programming in the pcm changed up so your fuel level gauge works correctly as well as tach, speedometer, etc. You could also convert the engine to drive by wire using a 04 engine harness and 04 pcm, along with an 03 or 04 throttle pedal, tach module, and complete intake manifold. You could also probably find an aftermarket harness to make your 2002 engine harness work with your 04 fuse panel and then just find an 04 van pcm. You could also just run it with an aftermarket engine management system like Holley Terminator. Whichever way you solve the electronic issues you'll also need to handle the fuel lines, the 04 4.3 used flared connections at the engine, all the v8 engines use push connect fittings. You'll also need a v8 expansion chamber and lines for the AC if you plan to retain it's function. All the V8 coolant hoses. Every problem is solveable, but it'll save you a lot of time, frustration, and probably money, to get yourself an 03 or 04 drive by wire engine with the harness, PCM, throttle pedal assembly, and the related components.

    • @MohawkMotors

      Thank you! Yes, BUT it's not a straight forward swap. The least difficult way to do it, would be to use the LQ9 long block and fuel injectors, with a 2000 to 2002 drive by cable intake manifold and PCM. Essentially convert the LQ9 to drive by cable and just get the pcm tuned for it.

      I don't think the stock injectors from an LQ9 will fit the TBSS intake manifold and fuel rail, there's like different fuel rail heights that fit that style intake manifold and I think only one is the correct height for the gen 3 style injectors that an LQ9 uses.

    Ah, the old drive is drive, neutral is drive, and reverse is not there. Was it a cracked sun shell? Mine was park, reverse, neutral, and drive were all drive. Neutral only worked if the engine was shut off, and parked worked but you couldnt rev the engine because the park pawl stopped it from moving but being in gear stopped it from revving.

    So you put a high mileage v8 motor on a high mileage previously rusty frame and installed a low mileage cab on the frame

    • @MohawkMotors
      @MohawkMotors 15 дней назад

      The white truck that the frame came out of only had 160k on it, I really wouldn't consider that high mileage on a 24 year old vehicle, and if you watched you saw that the front section of the frame was very clean and I replaced the rusty frame parts in the rear with very clean rust free frame parts. The 5.3 was obviously not the original engine to the truck it came out of so no idea how many miles are on it, but it runs smoother and quieter than half the 5.3's I see out in public, has good compression across all 8 cylinders, and holds great oil pressure. Those data points are way more important to me than mileage. The cab is low mileage but if you watched you know the reason I used it is because it's a Rust free cab, also because it's 20 years old and will get a reconstructed title PA won't even document the mileage, it will be exempt. When I sell it the price will reflect that it's a reconstructed title, not an original low mileage truck. Not to mention, this whole series will be linked in my for sale listing when it's ready so whoever wants to buy it can see all the work that has been done and know exactly what they are getting.

    Just curious, what did you do with the truck you removed the bed from? New flat bed? Utility bed? I have the opposite issue. I drove my truck ('03 Dodge 2500) to the scrap yard and they lifted my rusted box off for me. It was worth $19 LOL! Now I need to lift a replacement bed I bought currently stored in my driveway on the front edge. I will have to somehow lower it into a level position and then drive under to set on my truck. I'm hoping between a hoist and supports I can finagle this myself.

    • @MohawkMotors
      @MohawkMotors 15 дней назад

      I parted out the whole truck. I have used this method to put beds back onto trucks as well. Your challenge will be getting it back horizontal and right side up, with a hoist, maybe some saw horses or jack stands, and some ingenuity I'm sure you can do it. Just be safe! Good luck!

    Woohoo! Stoked you got this tug all done and had almost all the bits just laying around to do it. Hopefully maybe just cleaning the abs sensor will get that issue taken care of without needing to swap the bearings. I gotta look into it on the 02 sierra too. My 03 Silverado is throwing a persistent airbag light without any codes so this vid was helpful on seeing where the module is. Only codes on the truck are B2615, U1000 and U1305 so I gotta check wiring somewhere. Fuses were all good though. Anywho, keep up the great work and I'll catch ya next video.

    • @MohawkMotors
      @MohawkMotors 16 дней назад

      Thank you! I'm pretty pumped about how it turned out! One of the wheel bearings was original, the other had been replaced at some point, it was good to replace them anyway, new owner won't have to worry about them for a long time. U1000 and U1305 are network communication codes, U1305 is set when a module isn't communicating on the vehicle canbus network. It's fairly common for the airbag modules to get damaged from moisture in these trucks. Since it's also not setting any airbag codes maybe your airbag module has fallen victim to moisture and corrosion, the carpet and padding trap moisture and it kills the airbag module. Hope you get it figured out! Thanks for watching!!!!

    That's one hell of a deal! I'm glad you got a working manual tranny. I'm really curious as to what the mechanical damage is.

    To answer your question, the Duramax wasn't available until 2001, so the only manual available was the zf with the duramax. They brought out the 2500hd and 3500 in 01. That's why you can find obs gmt400 1 tons in 2000.

      @MohawkMotors you bet bud. You're new truck is one of my dream rigs. An ecsb 6.0 nv4500 4x4 that isn't a base model is a needle in a haystack. Keep us updated on the progress!

    All the 5.3 and 6.0 go 500k with minimal maintenance. I have friends that rarely do oil changes and they just keep going and even fix the lifter tics by themselves.
