Terror Island 1920 - Helmets of Hollywood | Brass Hat Diver |
"Helmets of Hollywood" is a new series here on the "Brass Hat Diver" channel, where we'll be taking a look at dive scenes in old Hollywood movies and picking apart the gear they used and find out a little bit more about it!
Our first film is the 1920 silent film starring Harry Houdini, " Terror Island." This movie is about a submarine inventor who gets involved in the search of a sunken treasure and the rescue of a young woman's father from cannibals.
The dive gear featured in this film belonged to the famous Californian diver, Edmond F. Defever, who is also the diver in this film. The helmet is a three light A J Morse & Son neck fed from the turn of the century and the pump is a three cyli...

The Hammond shallow water is a Miami made diving helmet designed by Louis Hammond in 1978. Less than 25 of these hats were produced, all being made of cast brass and weighing almost 75 lbs. These helmets were specifically designed for a tourist attraction to do underwater walks in the Dutch Antilles, Mr. Hammond even personally helped scout possible locations near where the cruise ships docked....

The History of Diving Museum's annual Vintage Dive Day at Jules' Undersea Lodge is a fantastic way to experience some of the original forms of diving! Participants were able to try out vintage double hose regulators, the Miller Dunn style 3 Divinhood, and a few were able to don a 1943 US Navy Schrader MK V! As always, we were glad to come back to lend a hand, bring a couple of helmets, set up a...
A. J. Morse & Son No 3 Diving Pump Restoration
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.7 месяцев назад
We've recently acquired this Morse No. 3 pump that came out of Canada, it 1st appeared in the company's 1910 catalog and was their most popular. It's a small pump, fairly light, and easy to work on. It was in fair shape when we received it, and after a good cleaning up and soaking of the leather, she was working good as new! After working on this pump, I can easily see why it was Morse's most p...

What a great idea! Looking forward to more in your series!!!
Great Channel! Looks like the same ladder we had at Vortex a couple of years ago
You guys have just too much FUN!!! Great to see you here again.
very cool. met Lou some years back and we talked about this helmet but this is the first time I've seen one
It's a verh blocky helmet! I love it!
Holy moly, that's a beautiful divin helmet
@EquipoJuxo definitely one of our favorites to dive!
I met Art McGee as a boy. My Dad was a Commercial Diver and we spent the day at his treasure Castle talking diving. When we got ready to leave he gave me a large fake treasure map that had little pictures of treasure diving history going around the outside. He autographed it for me too. My Dad was the first diver from Louisiana to contract with the English company Divcon and work in the Persian Gulf and North Sea using the recently developed Saturation diving. A lot of the early gear was made in my father’s garage and came from stuff he modified from hardware stores and Army surpluses. I live in Pensacola, so I am really surprised they have this at Vortex springs.
@danditto6145 the treasure castle is still there, but it's now a monastery school. Thanks for sharing, that's some great history to have!
Yo, that's pretty cool !
really cool :0
How deep is it possible to dive to in this style of helmet ?
@kevinsmith3490 with the original 2 cylinder wobble pump, a diver could only go about 30 ft. but with the use of compressors, the Navy and other experienced divers have taken these hat to over 100 ft.
❤❤❤
Where did you get your shorts/suit? WANT!
@@MattIvey those are Tru-Spec UDT shorts
Love the Desco! It's a good working helmet. You can get the air really going, you'll be huffin and puffin but get in er done!
@@justincaseu8 couldn't agree more!
Im actually slowly crafting my own diving helmet, and these videos are my inspiration
@SamLedferd-nj4ux can't wait to see your creation! Homemade hats are some of our favorites due to their uniqueness and individuality
Great video guys!!!
@paulbritt6209 thanks Paul, you're going to have to try it out next time!

@@southernbreeze3278 same to you!

Those are Tru-Spec UDT shorts!
What shorts/suit are you wearing? I'd love to get a pair!
They are Tru-Spec UDT shorts!
Micolash vibes…Anyone?
you look like the villian in spongebob
As a scuba diver that looks terrifying lol
super. merci pour la vidéo
I don’t typically enjoy the idea of going diving but seeing something like this really piques my interest
Wow!! This is amazing man
the water inside the hood would give me a panic attack
I feel like i'm choking watching this. You should wear plate armor as well, you'll look like an underwater knight. Bring a sword and fight a whale. Looking forward to more videos. They're exactly what i need in my life.
I like that, we'll have to look into getting a sword haha thanks a bunch!
This is a great idea! I've subscribed with the hope that you will put a microphone into the helmet with you for some live commentary, I imagine it being quite casual and comical, would that be possible or is the air flow noisy?
I like that idea! We're definitely going to have to try that out in the future!
Is it dangerous?
No more dangerous than scuba. A big selling point for these shallow water helmets was that if anything went wrong, the diver would take off the helmet and surface
cool but not worth 9 grand
Cool concept for a channel
6:20 mean Scuba folk
what a hilarious apparatus!
How deep is it possible to dive with this style of helmet?
10:05
Slack to diver!❤
How deep can you go in that helmet?
It’s been a dream of mine for years to dive in a real Mark V suit, and I hope to make it happen one day!
Very interesting!
do the rubber seals still work? on timestamp 0:59 they look very teared
All the seals on this pump are leather, and we only replaced them as needed. The majority of the gaskets are still the originals
Very cool! Thanks for sharing.
Looks like a fun walk . Is Barracuda reef off Ft, Laud .
It's between Ft. Lauderdale and Dania, just south of Port Everglades Inlet
Remember the area well . Lots of hogfish just S. of the channel. At least back in the 70/80's
Nice hat. Looks like fun
they don't make them like they used to. Thanks for sharing a rare glimpse into this old form of diving.
What a great way to experience the old world diving
How much pressure can it generate(or is that dependent on the depth that the diver is at)and what volume of air can it produce?
How deep is it possible to go wearing the helmet?
Scooba diving levels if he had a suit he would be able to go alot deeper
Very much enjoyed your videos, hard hat diving is a real experience I have had twice in the UK see link ruclips.net/video/2R0pJJBvJ5k/видео.htmlsi=vcwkYcRVyNOJTGG0
do all the bubles coing out the glass area mean its leaking or is that a feature?
Good eyes, these are brand new custom made helmets; the whole purpose of the dive was to do a pre in-service check of the helmets and tweak as needed. Everything was simple to fix by tightening a few screws and re-seating the neckring gasket. Hopefully we'll be getting back in the water soon to confirm all is good.
Awesome. Simply awesome.
