Otago Polytechnic Student Union. 1990. 👉♥️👈🥝✔️
Paul Ubana Jones came to our school in ‘88 or early ‘89, not long after he moved to NZ. The concert blew me away, then we paid $5 for a guitar workshop. The 14 year old me had all these questions about his tunings and RH technique etc, but Paul got us all to put our guitars down and walk around the hall with him, keeping in time with the groove. Several years later I figured out what he was teaching us. Since then I’ve probably heard him live around 30 times and introduced at least 4-5 girlfriends to him and his music. Each gig Paul was like, “I think we’ve met before. No? Oh you’re the new lady then.” Ha ha.
We had our flat warming in Newtown that evening, so I didn’t go to the concert. Later in the night a few people came to our party from the concert and told me I’d missed one of the greatest gigs ever.
Cool. I was at teachers college with Roger Watkins back in ‘97. Then a couple of years ago I was jamming at a friend’s place and saw this book in his bookshelf. I seem to have acquired it on long term loan, despite my offers to return it. The bands are all a bit before my time but I have come across some of the participants still lurking around town over the years.
Fucking obsessed
Great song
Robert Rakete, the brown wiggle 😊
Karen hay and her mumble and edgy show. Loved our nights watching these programmes
I love the album these three did together!
Better than the 1950s version lol
LOL the irony is that glam was dying out in the UK and Bowie had moved on to blue eyed soul by the time this came out.
Wow - thank you. I remember sneaking into the lounge room late Sunday nights to watch Radio with Pictures - Iconic Kiwi TV 🖤
Old School
Classic

Wish Relaxomatic had some live footage - I’ve searched and can’t find any. They were so good!
BRILLIANT!!!! ❤
I remember these guys. I worked a concert in auckland and they were amazing. It's truly insane to think it's just a bunch of guitars, they have skill beyond words.
Thanks for sharing
What a wonderful performance, by a wonderful songwriter, my God where did those 30 years go.
Love this song
0:12 The longest drink in town.
Hard to believe he was 57 then. Looks, moves and sounds far younger. Miss that guy.
Class act
No tv3 shows. Tvfm on a Saturday night
Fabulous! Thanks for this post, very good to see these old news items from yesteryear but incredible how vibrant they are in standing the test of time, it still felt very contemporary watching them.
What a fabulous flashback to Bowies epic touring highlights ❤ best bits are the comments on his new teeth and trademark 'One blue, one brown eye' 😂
Thanks so much for posting this! This song us more relevant now than '87!!
Mint!!
Paul is blessed with a sensitive soul.
Boy 2010
Should start another radio with pictures...we have do many new artists
I loved cmon😊
Same and Ready to Roll :D
YAAAASSS HD Kirsten Morell <3 Still crush on her every now and then.
Very, very cool. Great nostalgia.
Would love to know how to get hold of footage of Warkworth Feb 1979 as my mum was on the show :)
I very much doubt that episode still exists, unfortunately A search on Nga Taonga for 1979 shows only the final episode in Dunedin.
'New on Earth' is equally as good as 'South'. maybe better
Remember watching this documentary on tv late 80s,later bought the book "When Rock..." and later the book on 60s Auckland music scene Hostage to the Beat by same author as well as book Stranded in Paradise-NZ had a vibrant music scene with some good bands and solo singers who released some real gems during those years, some of which are now being given some overdue recognition (still have those books mentioned) Auckland New Zealand 2023
I just can't believe this never got big one of my favourite songs of the 00's
Phil O’Brien is on RNZ now is that right? I always hear him when it’s news on the hour
Yes, Phil's presented Saturday and Sunday Nights on RNZ National for a while, and Matinee Idle in the holidays for almost 20 years.
