SeaRey
Got a ride in my friend Dean's SeaRey. Lots of fun. We even floated on the lake for a bit in between. Should have brought my fishing rod.

sonex landing
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
It must be Sonex first flight season! Did the deed on the 19th after 5 calendar years with maybe 3 1/2 of that actual hands on labor. The flight was not without it's problems. I had a very heavy left wing and when I tried to use flaps the nose would pitch down a lot and I didn't have enough up trim to compensate. Since I'm flying off a grass strip it took several tries to get a good final appro...
Super Decathlon lesson 3

I'm in training to get my tailwheel endorsement so I can legally fly my Sonex when it's completed next year. I'm flying a Super Decathlon aerobatic airplane. It's a nice ride and a good choice for this training.
2nd first flight

A belated short video my friend Cam took on his phone of the first flight this year. I went up earlier but the winds aloft were terrible and I landed immediately. After a couple hour wait things got better and I was able to get a flight to Hardy Dam and back.
fall flight

Likely the last flight of the season for my ultralight. The cold has moved in early this year. The available light was not that great for filming but you can get an idea of the available color on the foliage

Probably the best fly in Breakfast venue in the area year after year. They were well on their way to 100 aircraft showing up this time around. It's not often you get a grilled steak with your breakfast at these things on top of the 10 other items you could choose from to eat.

Great day for some flying in my friends Super Cub. Went to breakfast and overflew his runway under construction. Made a couple of other stops but too much material for this video.
Cams Airstrip

Rough cut of a flight in my friends Supercub over his Airstrip that is under construction. I'm currently building a Hangar there and hope to be based there sometime this fall
Approach to Cams airstrip

A practice approach to friends airstrip that is under construction. It's 2500 ft long so length is not a problem. I believe it's about 200 ft wide in there so the camera may make it appear tighter than it really is. It gets more narrow by the house so maybe a displaced threshold would be in order there.

Show us the inside of your hangar. Great video.
I don't see you posting any videos of the Firefly anymore. Do you still have it? Are you still flying? I miss these videos, as I live in Michigan too.
I’ve missed going down there….hope you guys are doing well! 👍🙋♂️🖖🏻
I haven't been there all summer. One of my friends flew in there and said the strip was very rough now. George didn't fly much this year so I've only seen him twice. I've been flying in to Big Rapids on Saturdays for lunch for my flying entertainment this year.
Would love to see walk around vieo of your firefly and the new Sonex!! Love your flight videos!
Saweet
Curious how your hanger door opens.
where did you get the seat from?
what seatbelt did you use?
I don't know the brand name. It came with the kit. Has shoulder straps as well as a waist strap.

Looks great!! Good job! 👍🙋♂️🖖🏻
Hi Greg do you have a link to the sketch? I want to use the existing analogue fuel gauge a resistive type. Fuel sensor + arduino + resistive fuel gauge.
The sketch I have is specific to my homemade capacitive probe with a range in picofarads and mapped to a 0 to 5 volt output to run my gauge. If your gauge can accept a voltage input then you might be able to adapt the sketch provided your sender is a capacitive type. If your sender is a float resistive type a simple voltage divider on the input side of the arduino with an analog read and an analog write on the output would be a simpler solution. I don't have a link to the sketch but I could probably copy it to a reply here if necessary.
Hi Gregg, what size that runway you making?
You still flying this? Hello from Hesperia.
I keep telling myself (gotta build one)… It’s been 3 years since I have been telling myself that
Why no brakes?
What is the max headwind this can take?
Huge balls flying so low to the water, tree top landing or water? Man oh man.. lol. Safe flying!
Nice video bro, but I don’t see any LZs in case of engine out..especially over the lake and trees? Just curious
Just awesome.
Thanks for the video. You're one of the best 👌
Thanks. Hope to have some Sonex videos when it gets completed next summer.
Hi Greg, new sub here, I noticed you landed left of the center line? Just curious, every body I see online always says land on the center line, take off center line, taxi out to the strip , center line, Lolol... we’re the winds affecting your landing? Beautiful landing! I have a microlight trike, had a spitfire UL before that, had a bump in the road and had to sell it.. great flying bro just curious about the center line? Fly high and safe!
You are quite right. One should always strive to use the center line so that a margin of error can be maintained. Runway light strikes are more common than one might think. That flight was so long ago, I don't remember the reason for not being lined up. I certainly don't do that on purpose. It could be I had some push from a crosswind but don't know at this point.
@@greggkaat3965 thats what i figured..crosswind..
Nice bird
Well, done Gregg. I enjoyed the flight.
Nice plane...
looks like a blast!
Very nice colour scene
Excellent video but I thought I heard you say it is all aluminum. Isn’t it fabric wing cover?
Well if I did, it was a mistake. The wings and tail are indeed fabric covered. The tub that you sit in is made from steel and fabric covered. The rest is Aircraft grade aluminum
Красивый, душевный полёт. Спасибо за подаренные прекрасные минуты. Счастья Вам, ясного неба и мягких посадок.
I have a couple of questions 6+ years down the road from this video. are you still slying this plane? Did you upgrade to have an ADS-B device on board? what is the instrament with the LED tree on it indicating? if still flying this, any recomendations as to what it should and shouldn't have?
What do you use for navigation?
King AV8OR GPS...No longer available unless you can find a used one
Beautiful Kolb! Nice Work.
Hi Gregg. Nice flight, have you ever flown over Big Rapids? I live in Lindsay Ontario Canada but Big Rapids is my home town. I come home about three times a year to visit family. It takes me 8 hours about 485 miles I'am 85 miles north east of Toronto. Happy flying Gregg. Take care
Big Rapids airport has a lunch every Saturday year round. I occasionally fly in for that. I also shop in Big Rapids every weekend.
I'm surprised you fly such a large pattern with a ultralight. I fly a closer pattern even in a 150. Nice video and beautiful flight!
Some of that is the effect of the small lens on my camera and some is left over from my Cessna T41 days. I 'm always close enough in case of an engine out.
I grew up near Silver Lake (Mears/Shelby) and love seeing my home turf. Due to my Navy career (now retired), I didn't move back home and stayed in North Carolina where I met my wife. After watching your videos and all the other Kolb videos I could find, I decided on ordering a new RTF Firefly. My original choice was an Aerolite 103, but I just love the taildragger configuration of the Kold. As a GA pilot, I've flown many types of higher performance A/C to include Citabria lessons to learn the art of avoiding a ground loop. Can't wait to get my Firefly which will be initially painted dark blue to match the Blue Angels. I'll add the yellow to match their designs.
Been flying my Firefly for 7 years. If you take care of it, it will give you good times and good service.
Gregg, I used to live in Evart, Michigan. That's not too far from Reed City. I really love these videos. You look very at home flying that aircraft. I hope you're still flying. I'd like to see a really long flight from takeoff to landing. Exactly what type of ultralight is that you're flying? I'm watching your flights on a projector with a 120" screen. With the camera angle you have, it's almost like flying myself. I hope you'll keep making these videos. Safe flights always.
I meet a fellow Kolb flyer in Evart for breakfast once in awhile during flying season. Walk into town and go to the Lamplighter. I'm flying a Kolb Firefly. I'm sure Kolb would be happy to sell you a kit.
Gregg Kaat I'm going to check out their website today and have a look around.
Really? 4 people disliked this video. Why?!
Hi Gregg, great video, what are the take off / landing distances required. I assume you can use a grass runway if needed?
Looks good, looking to make one for my go kart
Love these planes
Thanks for the video. The 2 gal behind the seat is without oil until you fuel up right? Also, what nav/com do you use?
I pre-mix my fuel. The radio is a vertex standard handheld with an external antenna on the plane. I use an AV8OR GPS for nav.
@@greggkaat3965 thanks for the info. i think ima go with the nav-com from sporty's pilot shop, that's pretty close to 150 or so.
Nice video, enjoyed watching
Nice video Gregg! Your audio is great considering it's in a noisy Firestar.
I can see this video segway into another video explaining your instrument panel with the various instruments and warning lights. I noticed you even have a small pedestal to hold your Garmin with other "things" beneath it. Your helmet cam does a wonderful job showing things outside your aircraft but can't quite show what you have inside your aircraft. Thanks for all of your videos. They are informative and entertaining.
Thanks for your input. Glad you enjoy the vids. I'll try to take care of your request once I start flying regularly again. Weather here in Michigan has been the pits the spring.
nice vid and aircraft
don't forget the bread board capacitance! don't know if that has anything to do with any issues you may have. I can not even guess at the times I ran out of gas. in a car. I'm thinking you DO NOT! want to run out of fuel in a aircraft of any kind. I would love to get in to ultralight aircraft. but I'm so bad to run it of gas. it could be bad! I have thought about building one. I'm OK at building things. I can engineer things and they have worked. I'd probably over do it. and end up with a mini P51 or something. I'd like to build a glider with electric motors and solar panels. where the motors do not have to run constantly. allowing some charge time. maybe add a small 2 cycle engine just in case. lithium and other battery technology is getting very good. electric semi trucks. maybe in a few years electric 747 aircraft! in a few years. now 25 pounds of lithium cells can be very potent. in current and amp hours. I just don't know about boarding a maned kite! I'm allergic to sudden stops! great idea. you may want to check out the pre made electronic gauges. for about $70 delivered.
they are a guy with a video of a gauge he sells with lots of adjustability. for $45 + $25 s&h. just search fuel gauges on RUclips.
Thanks for the advice on another fuel gauge but mine is working well now. I have refined the design and have been using it in my ultralight for the last year now. It was also more fun and personally satisfying to design my own.
I guess this is a plane you fly on. correct? I thought mottle at first. I need a simple gauge for a 15 gal fuel cell. and would like it to be either large enough to see from 20' or small. about 1" or less. to put in house. its for off grid home generator. that can be used as much as daily. its a 24 volt system. the cell is fuel for 3 generators. a DC generator and a large ac and small ac generator. I'm wondering if this could be programmed for volts and amps. and or volts and frequency? I don't know if it has space for programming. I don't know arduino. and am new to electronics. but I'm learning.. it would be nice to make a control and monitor board. like the dash of a car. to start the generators from. and monitor rpm temp. fuel level DC volts. AC volts AC Hz. and DC & AC current. all operation conditions. and 3 or 4 hour meters. but all that can wait until later. and can be built a little at a time. great video.
dave smith colo really enjoy your vidios
Congratulations... Do you know how much it costs to built?
Nice greg, carrie and i was just talking about your plane
