It sure covers some acres up there, yes I bet the aviation fuel tanks must of been massive with how busy that place was in the wartime. When did the place officially close Adam ?
@Dave.w-ev9qn1962 RAF Davidstow was put into care and maintenance in late 1945. Officially struck off by the Air Ministry by early 1946. The very last squadron and it's Aircraft left in Jun 1945 and it was used as a as a F1 racing circuit in the early 1950s.
@@Dave.w-ev9qn1962 RAF davidstow was officially closed in 1945 put into care and Maintenance in the final months of 1944 and completely closed by 19 46 the airfield was used for Formula 1 racing in the early 50s
@@twowheelexploration9228 So soon after war ended then! No Cold War use or training camp roll. Remember father taking us up there on family days out in the 70s and it looked much the same as it is today. Was told it was built there because it was high ground and didn’t get fog bound. Interesting place Thanks for info!👍
@Dave.w-ev9qn1962 no worries glad you enjoyed it. By VE day Davidstow had out lived it's purpose as it became beyond useful range of Europe and it's operations that had ceased at wars end. It was unfortunately realised throughout the later part of the war that the station was becoming less practical as the war came to an end. Inhospitable conditions and infrastructure that was inadequate due to the severe conditions in winter backed up by notorious training accidents and crashes. Although the runways were the longest in much of Southern England it also pioneered FIDO and GCA which were new effective progressions in flying safety.

Very informative mate! All this going on back in the day without public knowing much about it. That square pin plug dates that one a bit later. As far as I can remember they came in around mid 60s I suppose main thing they were tracking was submarine? Good teamwork 👍
@Dave.w-ev9qn1962 thanks mate its very interesting stuff. Yet again something I knew nothing of. Best wishes TwEx
Magic mate
Thanks mate
Nice, do you happen to have a walk through of changing the belt? I'm going to change mine soon, but this is new to me!
@lewismacandrew Hi mate it's a very simple job on a T25 if yours is a DG series engine petrol. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts then slacken the tensioner bolt swing the alternator towards the engine the belt can just now be removed by hand. Reverse process to fit new belt. Use a metal rod or a piece of wood to put tension on the belt. Hold with one hand then tighten up bolts. Sadly I no longer have the van but this is a very simple job and you'll be fine. Best wishes
Brilliant this. Charlie is a sweetheart! We lost our family dog recently 😢
@@markhaines172 Thanks yes it's very tough when you lose a friend. They'll always be with you though. Glad you enjoyed the vid.
I thought that alcove might be the Loo. LOL. So where did folks go to the bathroom? Did they just use a bucket? Also in the United States, the bomb shelters I guess were more focused on longer times being in the shelter. (Due to Nuclear threat in the 1950s). So they would have more food storage etc..
@outoftheforest7652 the many shelters built in residential locations here in England for WW2 were mostly either occupied at night as a precaution or during a raid, often during day light attacks and normally folks would leave the shelter as soon as the all clear was given. Many civilians were lost as a result of almost daily and highly raids so people took these shelters and air raid precautions very seriously. A bucket would of likely been an essential item and as the situation was so dire in the early war years survival was favoured more than comforts. Not many private public or military Air raid shelters had a toilet incorporated. Hope you enjoyed our look around this. TwEx
Great bit of history Adam! What you call “Hidden in plane sight” We don’t know what little gems we walk by and don’t know they are there. Looks very well built back in the day.👍
@Dave.w-ev9qn1962 definitely. A great opportunity to see it. Glad you like it
It was an absolute privilege to be part of this it just goes to show folks there is things hidden big thanks to Andy the owner and Adam too

@twowheelexploration9228 i think i spotted you at Enfields stand you was chatting so did not bother you
Lovely place for an evening walk at wheal basset and your right Adam it has been like summer today! That frue vanner building with the signs could do with a bit trim out this winter, surprising what manages to grow in that old floor. Looks like Charlie enjoyed the walk too! Good watch mate!👌
Thank you it was really good experience up there this evening

@TheNorthernTsar Thanks hope you enjoyed it
Thanks for the video; they are a nice piece of kit. A point of information re the "Test" sequence: I understand that these units incorporate a very small radioactive check source, adjacent to the detector, which provided a few counts to help establish functionality of the equipment. These sources really were very small and of either Sr or Cs isotopes having half lives of the order of thirty years. Of course, this doesn't mean they no longer provide check counts after that time, only that the rate is halved (quartered in sixty years, etc etc). I mention this because I gather PDMRM 82 units have been know to "Fail" the test sequence because of check source problems (rather than genuine non-functionality of the instrument). I hasten to add that I've no personal experience of this, but worth Googling if you do have an issue. Finally, I don't know the service/storage time that Plessey designed these units for - and check source size to remain sufficiently active for the "Test" function correctly - but Plessey did a very professional job on these meters & I imagine they should be still good for some time yet...
@navstar7334 thanks for this very interesting information you certainly know your stuff hope you enjoyed the video
Nippy little ride mate. Got any salmon!
As they say” everything comes to those who wait”🙂. It’s been a monumental job and hellish winter to work through but it will make some difference now for getting around in cornwall!! We will soon forget what the old road was like😀👍
Oh yes indeed mate hopefully it will be a massive improvement getting around the countryside and cutting journey times in half mate
Glad to see it finally open
Oh yes driving should get a whole lot less stressful now. I'm told Truro to Bodmin now takes roughly 20 minutes.
Well even if some of the byways were not accessible you went through some lovely Cornish countryside on that ride mate! Great watch👍
Thanks mate

@@twowheelexploration9228 Thanks a lot
good history on this one, nice one,👍
Thanks mate
Very interesting Adam, seems to be wherever you go on the lizard there is world war 2 history. Must of been very busy area at the time. I suppose there was no point digging that building into the ground, the masts would give its position away no problem!
Hi thanks yes indeed. I've since found out that the radar equipment that would once have been there was moved from RAF Dry Tree which was sited next to Goonhilly Earth Station. So it's logical to assume that Pen Olver was created by necessity and with borrowed equipment meaning it was a pretty make shift affair rather than a planned installation. Thanks for watching. TwEx
That does sound right really, this place does look like it was built in a hurry and dry trees it very well built! On you tube the other day farmer was showing parts of trerew station in his field at newquay. It’s surprising how much is still standing after all this time.

What great work they are doing at that museum! And through your videos Adam we have seen this place grow. It’s amazing where all this comes stuff comes from after all this time. It’s nearly 80 years since my father landed on the Normandy beaches as an 18 year old boy from madron, Trying to get their tanks off the beach. He must of had to grow up fast then!! Great video Adam👌
