LEICA SL2-S - The Review, Buyer's Guide | Should you buy it?
You are sweating too much pushing this camera. Did you buy it or was it a loan from them? Let’s review the facts: Hasselblad was almost bankrupt a few times. At present, is wholly owned by DJI, a Chinese company. The body is still assembled in Sweden but all the internal guts are made in China with cheap parts. The lenses are made by unknown companies and branded Hasselblad (cheaply made, read reviews). If you need customer support for repair, you need to send it back to Sweden and they have to contact DJI for parts. In the end, you spend a LOT of money for a Chinese product with limited support and questionable quality. More than half of the price is the brand. Go buy them…😊.
Great video, really useful. Only one point… use a mic that’s better suited for studio voice because listening to this on a tv has far too much bass.
I'm neither of those but I'm sold
Love your videos and the way you present and comment the gear. Always a highlight !
Selling mine if anyones interested, stuck evf but world great otherwise
The quality of your review is close to that of this Lens , amazing on my M11 monochrom . Which 35 mm Mandler would best match with the 75 1.4 to make a coherent pair in terms of renderind , especially in black and white ?
The 35 Lux Aspherical...
Curious regarding what small sling bag that you use that fits the SL2S with M-lens fitted.
Another Stella video. Superb. Only wish someone was doing what your doing for the olympus noctilux tryptic. Thoroughly enjoyed this. :)
Love the video! You mentioned "one of two lenses you'd never sell" - whats the other one? :)
Still today the best M for me
well….if I had not already bought this camera, I would now.
What combination of adapters would you use to using a Nikon Z-lens to the X2D? Thanks in advance.
@@kenthall4207 apologies mate but I’m not familiar with z lenses. But if there is a reasonably priced one which I don’t have to stack upon another I’d go with such an option. Novoflex does decent quality adapters.
Idiots who pay for Chinese overpriced crap. I shoot Leica as well as Fuji 100s and 50r medium format.
Thanks. Do you know if it's possible to add an click or beep to the electronic shutter to get an audible feedback when the shutter is pressed?
Danke!
@@CineFlightSim Hey friend! Thank you so much. You are very kind and I appreciate it very much. 👍🏽 🙂
did u try any Xpan lenses with the adaptor?
My "Gold Standard" the Leica MD 262. What else? I`ve shot film for 30 plus years and this digital camera encapsulates both worlds in one body...!
any autofocus adapters? specifically canon ef to hasselblad?
Amazing video, the way you speak and how you managed to record your voice and put it in harmony with background music is just extraordinary. Some epic edit!
you mentioned you would consider getting the native xcd 80mm 1.9. Wondering if you’ve given the newer xcd 90mm 2.5 a consideration? Why choose one over the other since you mentioned the 80mm?
@@SaranginSF I prefer the extra 10 mm even though it’s not much. But the truth is I’m simply a sucker for f/1.as low as possible. The 90 mm does have a beautiful rendering I have to say. But I do prefer the 80mm for my style of photography. How about you?
@@oliscurra Thank you for the prompt feedback! I agree with you, the 80mm 1.9 is perfect for a more methodical workflow, especially in a studio setting. It truly does produce some of the most beautiful images compared to my other lenses. However, the downside is its cost and the hefty weight of 1044g. Since I've been leaning more towards street photography lately, the lighter 90mm 2.5 at 550g seems like a better fit for my needs. So, I'm planning to sell the 80mm at a loss and switch to the 90mm, as I think I'll get more use out of it in my current style of shooting.
Nice review. And you have helped me make up my mind. I will be buying Fuji MF rather than the Hassie. As magnificent as the X2D is, I need more flexibility.
Total got to agree with that 12:33 it’s. User experience is off the charts
First video to actually help me decide whether or not to buy this camera (versus an "ordinary" full frame). Thanks!
@@davidpalmer9538 glad to hear it David. And what did you decide?
@@oliscurra All of the factors that you mentioned resonated with me. I'm now confident enough in the Hasselblad to hire one over the Christmas period. I recently moved to Alberta and can't wait to get some wintery landscapes and warm indoor shots with family. I currently have a 10 year-old Canon 5D iii, which has brought me so much joy over the years. But it's time for an upgrade, and I've struggled to choose between the latest Canon or Sony entries, or make a move to medium format. Thanks again for a terrific video, which made a great deal of sense to me.
@@davidpalmer9538 Nice one man. I built my whole wedding photo businesses on a 5D mark iii. What an awesome camera. It is a huge jump though and very different cameras. Let me know about any questions you have. Happy to answer you til you rent it out.
@@oliscurra Thanks! I'll let you know how it goes 🙂
Thank you for the comprehensive look. Some Leica lenses take years to fully appreciate-unfortunately I typically appreciate them years after I already sold them when looking back through photos. And then I realize everyone else appreciates them now, as well, and price is 10x. Never sell a good condition Leica lens. That’s my advice. lol This old Leica fan learned some things from your presentation-thank you! I have never owned this lens, typically jumping to the 90s as I often shot on the M3 (no frame lines). And the 90/2 is SO good. But having a M body with frame lines now, and appreciating the softer, more micro contrasty look, additionally everyone around me is aging.. I really need to get one of these before they blow up.
Loved the approach to your video. Thanks for this.
On the price point I think is reasonable as a full frame Leica m11-D without a screen is more expensive 😅
Very well presented. Learned a few things :) thank you Ollie!
This is my favorite subject in photography. I am adapting Hasselblad V (CF and F) series lenses on my Nikon FF mirrorless bodies. It is simply amazing what you can do with MF glass . I am shooting always in Manual mode with aperture priority setting on my Nikons. Most of images have little to no chromatic aberration. The other advantage I noticed is the fact that the image circle of MF is much larger than FF(old 35). This means that my camera sensor is cropping the sharpest part of the image circle. I have only a couple of Z native lenses, but most of my work is done with Hasselblad adapted lenses. I will not go back in spite of losing the autofocus option!
Its a defined emotional experience. I think the camera is less clinical feeling than most camera systems. Ive recently purchased the New Limited Edition model with the 55 lense. Im waiting for Adorama to get them in stock then i will get mine sent. Im 61 and -had many different cameras in my day. The Hasselblad has always eluded my budget....but not this time. Im like a kid in a candy shop waiting for Christmas to arrive. I too will be printing my images on my Epson printer. Living in cyberspace is no place to leave your beautiful works. Great video with intelligence and feeling.
Hi Oli, what you take on this vs Voigtlander Heliar Classic 75mm f/1.8 VM? thanks!
again great content! thank you!
OMG this is the best video so far on this topic! I'm lucky to get a X2D with about 65% of MSRP, and I'm having a hard time to build on the lenses system to use on this camera, they are so expensive, this is exactly what I need! thank you ! and followed!
It truly is wonderful lens. A pilot doesn't begin flying in an aircraft capable of Mac-2 + In fact, to understand flight, one starts with homemade gliders, I mean kids stuff, toys. When of age, a single engine 2-seater. .. and so on. The .95 Noctilux is something to work up to, having mastered f2. Thanks for this presentation. Spot on. 👌 ▪︎ A major factor in an items pricing is the economy of scale. The cost of R&D and 'tooling up' must be recovered, whether it's for 500 units, or 50,000. For those who can utilise this lens's properties to the fullest, of course it is worth every penny. 🤝
Better then a xpro3?
Definitely the best and most nuanced review of the X2D.
Thank you mate. 👍🏽 I hope I wonder if I said the word "nuanced" enough in it. 🙂
Thank you so much for this profound review of this outstanding camera! The most conclusive and appealing video I found on the internet, chapeau, well done! Yes, I think I am the type of photographer able to appreciate the qualities of the Hasselblad, and to take images which justify the high investment. It will reward me with an almost spiritual user experience: Landscapes, forests, trees, plants, flowers, still life, cats, portraits, farm houses etc. However for the near future I see no opportunity to finance it together with 2-3 lenses. So I am continuing shooting with my very versatile Canon R6 MkII, which for it's price point is an excellent camera too delivering close-to-nature colors as well.
Aye man. Honestly, don’t stop making RUclips videos. This video was a work of art.
Thet "give" at the end of the apture ring seems to be consistent for all leica lenses. I buy all my lenses used and all my leica lenses are like that. Even the ones i test out at leica stores. Funny thing is i also buy used ziess and voigtlander lenses and they don't have that give. They feel more solidly built than Leica lenses. 😂😂😂😅😅
I have the X1D and love it and not sure what benefits the X1DII would bring. Would I leap over to an X2D - probably not - it's the same size sensor with more and hence smaller pixels on it - not necessarily a good thing, However, the main factor is the lack of continuous focus - for location even studio work models/dancers do move and so you're reliant on zone focussing. Continuous focussing has been around for decades on digital cameras it's a surprising absence on these cameras.
I'm considering selling my Leica M11 system and moving to this. It's bigger and less subtle than the M11 but the colours from the X2D and the detail are on another planet compared to the Leica. I had the GFX 100 for a while and loved the colour but it was a bit much. The X2D is lighter and generally more modern.
Zeiss should have make a LOXIA like lens for xdc & gfx system
Thanks!!! You have hit my nail on it head. And knowing what I’m striving for in my photography and in my images. Is how I will always make my choices in cameras. Comparing one camera vs another does not really work for me. It sometimes confuses the my decision. But knowing myself and my needs as you have stated them here. Get me to see clearly what is my right way to go.
I found out I was a dynamic range buff when I started shooting with the A7R V and it let me get photos I had only dreamt of before. Getting even more DR and better color is what tempts me about the X2D (besides the beautiful build and feel), but since there are things I can do with my A7R V I *can't* do with the X2D, it wouldn't be an upgrade, but a goal for a day I can drop money on a second system.
June 2025 - in 10 months, new X2D II will be out *better wait, for that kind of money - just my 2 cents...
13:11 nope, as Koenigsegg actually (Ferrari has problems)
Man. Looks good.Have to reconsider my direction
Hi Oli, I can’t agree more. Since I have the SL2 s, my M11 stays on the drawer. My 2 main lenses M 35 lux FLE II and 75 lux M pre asph. I sometimes use the 24-70 L which is a great all rounder but a log to carry. I shot 50 years with M bodies and because of my eyesight decreasing, I found a new youth with the SL2s Dioptric EVF, live view, IBIS, BSI sensor, Magnifier, big pixel vs numerous but small.. Stunning images!!! It reminds me of my beloved M9. Keep up the good work! Thanks for sharing. Peace
talk a lot of sense and yes do intend to hire first on such an expensive purchase, as well as I take photographs sometime in low light with fast glass (on FF iso 4000 f2) so it definitely is can the X2D cope with this environment
Great video! It answers all questions relevant for me. I'd have lived to hear something about the weight of the camera.
I apologize, I watched your video again to get the answer 😎
Do I need an adapter for the X2D if using TTArtisan 90mm F1.25 Full Frame. AND do you feel it’s much better to get the XCD 90mm V ? Also I really enjoy your videos, thanks for all your input. 👊🏼
3months ago i know right...but...if you go to flicker...you can type in the lens...45mm or 90mm.....either version of 45mm is far superior to the 90mm....just my two cents worth🤷♀
