This is an entry-level horn at a very low price point. In the past, students of mine have struggled with their bargain priced horns. The Glarry alto gets it right. Free-blowing through the range from low Bb to high F#, g...

The best of all instruments! Keep us posted.
Watched again and get confused with the point on less resistance on alto. Maybe it’s an old Conn feature?
Good point. The tenor swan neck can build a little more resistance than the 90 degree bend of an alto neck...
Great value here.

I find your explanation best on YT along with Sirvalorsax channel, nothing fancy - just truth!
Agreed - that guy is all wisdom
Funny but it’s a most honest truth. Wish I knew this when I was in music college 15 years ago.
What did they teach you?
@@davegoodsax I was on the bass without music school there, my bass teacher was always absent and other teachers was mostly ignoring me, yelling that I’m too old to learn music. (I was 20 at that time) So I gave up and quit and it’s my biggest fail and regret. But now I realize that there is no way I give up again, so I do practice EVERY single day.
@@xrgiok man....sorry about that bad experience. One is never too old to learn music
Breathing is a reason why I choose a saxophone to play. Overtones, long tones, thinking of way I put air through the horn is so soothing and satisfying.
Yeah....and it's a lifelong pursuit....
@@davegoodsax I put this goal just like you say - lifelong journey.
I love to practice long tones! Tell more about mouthpieces and reeds, I use Legere 2.25 reed with Yamaha 4c for two months and now I feel like I need change to bigger tip opening.

Stuff I've picked up along the way....how's your improvising coming along?
@@davegoodsax Hello Dave, I’m just a complete beginner, I’m 35 and I always looking for wisdom that can provide only highly experienced people like you. Your videos are like water in desert!
@@xrgiok are there any questions you want answers to? Thanks for being there
@@davegoodsax I’m curious about so many details of playing, too many questions sir! For example I do overtones on low B flat : I can produce octave, fifth, and next octave, but I can’t do the same over low C, I feel like mouthpiece is shutting down. Why?
@@xrgiokmaybe you are over-blowing low C? Try going from the first partial on Bb immediately to the first partial on C...if you can get the Bb partial then your air/embochure are right on and the C partial should blow freely. But sometimes we make micro adjustments and try to force results with a tighter embochure instead of using air speed. LMK if this helps.
I don't know anything about saxophones but I have been playing guitar and bass for over 30 years and right now my favorite guitar is a Glarry (I do have two Glarry guitars that I don't play. Not bad but not very good. "Value" guitars for sure) but my Glarry bass is the best bass I have ever owned.
Great video ! I play Alto, playing jazz improvisation, and I find the alto has a better ‘ Cutting Edge ‘ than tenor for what I do, and is certainly no ‘easier’ than tenor…..
I play both and for me the tenor is easier to make sound good especially in the higher register. I sound Horrible above octave A on alto but it's effortless on tenor. I play a Yanagisawa T-991 with a Hard Rubber Ambika 3 in a 6*. Still looking for my ideal setup on Alto. I learned on a YAS-62 with an S80 C* years ago and sold it to pick up tenor and I just recently bought an alto again.
Agreed. In my experience, alto sax gives you nothing. You have to pick up your alto every day and love blowing those long tones....with massive air support and a loose embochure. Let me know how it works out with your new alto.
It’s depends on what you mean by “harder”. All instruments are hard to play.
Granted. But...do you play? Have you experience with the various horns? Alto sax is smaller and has a higher voice that takes mastery to smooth and keep in tune.
@@davegoodsax I’m playing the tenor and the clarinet. Which one is hardest to play? It’s impossible to are a general comparison.
Hey Dave, first time here… (7-11-2024.) Thanks for the video. I like your teaching style ( take no prisoners ). Just straight ahead “ old school” technique. May not make little 12 yr old Johnny happy.. but for an adult student, you’re spot on. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Thanks! Yes, this channel is for adult learners....
Imagine someone back in time saying to Cannonball Adderley that alto is sax for kids 😅
LOL
You are speaking the truth. I’m an alto player ever. I have to practice it constantly to sound good. Tenor saxophone not so much. It’s always been a mystery as to why. Thanks for the peace of mind. 😊
Alto sax gives you nothing. But when tamed, what a sound, yes?
A few months ago I had the opportunity for 4 pros to listen to me play and there was criticism. Of coarse there was criticism. I'm an adult armature! I have been consciously working on governing the vibrato, tightening up on the changes and playing legato. I loved it. It didn't hurt because they had my best interest in mind. Years ago, my critical mother told my wife, is that all he does? I don't know how you can stand it! That hurt, but I got over it. She was how she was!
I use to play reeds 2 and a half I went down to 2 because my lips are starting to hurt
How's that working for you?
I play the tenor I think it’s the easiest because of free blowing
I think a lot of our sax pals will agree with you...
Glarry is also making very affordable guitars. I think these Far East instrument makers are steadily improving their products based on reviews like this one. Something I’ve observed over the past couple years.
Agreed.
Nice how are you doing?
Vince! Great to hear from you.
I believe the smaller the wind instrument, the tougher it is to make sound good. That’s why I play baritone sax. :)
I love it!!!!
I think you might be right. Just straight harder to tame like a high revving engine.
Nice 😎✨
Thanks!
Ya man ! And of course when nothing comes to mind and you gotta solo...play the melody 🙂
Great advice!!!
My best ideas for licks and melodies come when I’m on my daily power walk. I suppose I’ll start singing or whistling them into my phone for next practice.
Great idea! Keep having fun, eh?
Thanks, Dave, for all the consistently useful help and advice! I think of this like singing. I typically DON'T sing because I have horrible control and the vocal range of an etch-a-sketch. But enter the sax, that extends my range and at least puts me in the BALLPARK of the pitch! The rest is still up to me as the player. I just try to get the mouthpiece in the best position for the middle range of the horn. I have found that playing songs with backing tracks really helps me play better in tune. And just like singing, vibrato helps hide imperfect tune! :)
Hi Neal -- stay tuned: in my next video, we're gonna want you to sing! As bad as you want!😅
@@davegoodsax Fun side note, I was playing on a dead end road yesterday near some woods and drove a wild turkey absolutely nuts! But everyone knows turkeys are a tough crowd.
Ty
Great information for anyone, beginner or advanced. A,B,C’s
Thanks for your feedback....
I play a slow tune really slow to practice long tones to make it not boring holding the notes long than written much more fun and and get the long tone exercise and learn to play the song without making mistakes when I play it up to speed two for the price of one😅
Perfection!!!
Hello, thanks for your videos. I like the idea of the long tone practice incorporated into learning a tune. I thought because I had a saxophone in my mouth, I don’t sing and I couldn’t sing, still can’t but I sure sing the lyrics of a song now. It’s incredible how knowing the lyrics helps with the phrasing of the melody and learning the tune. Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and many more greats knew the lyrics of every song they played. Eg, Line 1. ‘ There will be many other nights like this. From one of my favourites, the singer gives you the contour of the melody, so you know if you should be going up or down the horn and the approximate interval. I wish I had started doing this many years ago. I suddenly realised I like singing as well!! Cheers Dave.
I’m loving the long tone advice Dave, thanks for that top tip 👍
Glad to help. I picked up this knowledge along the way and can't take full credit...but it helps me, and I hope it helps you too.
Patience is a virtue. I think a lot of times if someone doesn't 'get it' in a session or two, they think they can't. I've spent up to a month trying to memorize a jazz standard, often it it goes more quickly, but it can take up to a month for me. I am learning patience as well as music. It pays off in the end.
Great advice, Laura. Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah, sometimes it takes a minute to learn a song, especially when you factor root movement and chord spelling into the equation. Which stanfards are you working on?
@@davegoodsax Rign now, Song for My Father. Basic melody went pretty well, but now memorizing the chord changes as well as arpeggios (ascending/descending) that fit in is taking a while. I think I have it, until I don't! But I am not giving up!
@@Laura-wg5jk that's the right way to do it....can't wait to hear you play!
And as Dave suggested to me, learn the song in different keys. Just when you think you're done with a song, add this wrinkle to really get your brain firing and to be able to play along with the recording.
Thanks for that reminder, Roger. How's all?
@davegoodsax going great. The community band is ramping back up with a bunch of new music leading to a couple of gigs, southern gospel band gig on May 5, polka band doing a parade at the end of May, trying get all of "Sir Duke" worked out along with trying the intro i have down in different keys. Loving that VanDoren V16 A6, very reed-friendly which removes that stressor.
Great topic, Dave. Do you think of the note names when you are memorizing tunes?
Good question. I used to, back when I was learning keys/notes. Now, thank goodness, that's ingrained in memory. But -- if I'm practing a tune minus the horn, all memory, yes, I will think of the note names. You actually can practice without your horn.
I like your approach. And what you said is true. When was the last time I memorized anything? I was just chocking my inability to memorize music on my aging brain and the sax. As a kid I had no problem memorizing piano music, as an adult no problem the same with the guitar but years later when I picked up the sax I couldn’t memorize even the simplest of tunes. I figured it had to be because you cant see the notes you play on the sax and that I must be visual in my memorization. Glad I’m not the only one struggling with this. I am going to give this a try and hopefully it’ll work. Thanks, Dave😊
Hey Rob, let us know how it goes for you. The more of it you do, the easier it gets....remember, start simple, ok?
Rob, I think you hit on something with your comment about not being able to see the notes on the sax. Visualization might be the key to a breakthrough. I think I will try making a slow motion visual snapshot of where my fingers are while connecting the note name to the screen shot. I think I have done that subconsciously for years for the easy notes but a more conscious and deliberate process might be more effective, especially for the little finger notes and the palm keys. I don't know. I'm just thinking out loud!
