Fort Gilkicker 27th July 2024
Fort Gilkicker 27th July 2024
Here is another drone video from our partner Mike Atthis.
This video starts with a sweep from east to west along the fighting face of the fort and then returns via the gorge face to give us an east to west view of the roof.
You can see the brickwork construction of the new parapet wall is nearly complete. In particular, most of the replacement chimney stacks have now been completed. These replacements are not functional but restore part of the look of the fort as it was in the 19th century.

Gosport Bastion no. 1, Browndown Battery, Fort Gilkicker, Hors...

Littlehampton Fort 1st May 2024 Here is another drone video from our partner Mike Atthis. Construction of Littlehampton Fort was begun in 1854 before the Royal commission of 1859. Like Shoreham Fort, it features a Carnot Wall in the ditch which can be clearly seen in this video. Th...

Did they not present, aim and fire or was the rifle not accurate enough to aim?

Good question. I'll have to ask one of the rifle drill experts and see what they say.

The correct command pre 1881 was only "Present"... in this one command, the man raised the rifle, aligned the sights >and then< after three beats of quick time, pressed the trigger . After 1881, the command was broken down to two parts. "Present" saw the rifle raised and sights aligned, and "Fire" saw the man press the trigger. With the Martini, (this being a carbine version of it) the word both to initially load and then to 'reload' was "Ready"...

That video was taken by the late Roger Gill when we were exploring the place. Can confirm it was the East side of the MC and was accessed through the garden of the house in the South-East corner of the site. It was the only MC where both sides of the ditch were revetted in concrete.

@@palmerstonfortssociety8884 Forgot to mention, at the very end there is a brief view of the west end of the Gorge Casemates where a heating plant was installed when the Casemates and roofed over ditch were used as archive storage. Have some digitised copies of Roger's Videos around somewhere, he took them at all the surviving MC's except Halstead IIRC.
