Pedaling with Poonces

No - I am not one of those crazy mountain bikers who fling themselves off cliffs, over massive gap jumps, or shreds down 40% angled dh trails. But what I am, is an exceptionally average middle-aged goofy mountain biker who loves to bring you a smile, a laugh and maybe even gives you a whiff of some mtb knowledge on various trails, bikes, and locations.
Come for the mountain biking footage. Stay for the laughs.

Cumberland, BC - THE BEST MTB on EARTH!
Cumberland, Britsh Columbia on Vancouver Island is, in my opinion, THE BEST place to mountain bike....in the WORLD! I'm not saying it has the best trail in the world, but is the best place to ride. Why? You ask very politely and pleasantly, I hope! Because it has almost 200! - 200!!! trails with a massive variety from easy, beginner Green's all the way to epic jump and gnar Double Black Diamond's. All within a 5 to 50 minute mountain bike ride from the Cumberland Village.
I could go on and on about Cumberland, but for now...enjoy the sights and sounds of "Cumby" riding.
Let me know...what place do you think is the BEST place to ride (and not just because it has your favorite trail...but h...

As soon as I saw the tesla I left.
@@macwashik2685 Oooookay. I didn’t mean to offend you by having a different vehicle than you drive. Thanks for stopping by!
Very different seeing someone ride single track in the rocky desert. Thats the type of place i would ride my dirt bike ha
@@JoshuaDomoslai Yes, it’s very different from where I am from (and learned to ride) in B.C. Which is what makes it so fun to ride!
Very interesting. I just demoed both the tallboy and the high tower. Love them both but tallboy sure was fun. I live in Florida not many ups. However there’s for every up there is a down. I’m wondering what that might do with that link. Great video though.
@@ireddie Thx for commenting! Yes Tallboy is the slightly more fun/playful of the two whereas the Hightower is the better descender. I still have my TB (had for over 3 years now and 3k miles) and love it but every once in awhile consider switching to the HT. Can’t go wrong with either really!
I’ve been two the exact place he filmed the intro it’s in a parking lot with Tesla charging stations next to a Chapters book store in Nanaimo. I also mountain bike in Cumberland o Almost every day
Just bought the Rocky Mountain Instinct PP A50 its great, motor is very powerful, and the battery range is really good. After testing the two motors (ep8 and Dyname) the Dyname is much better. Love the bike. And when you say "engine" triggers me its MOTOR. lol sorry.
@@hudsonisbetter Great choice! Yes I find the dyname a better motor…or is it engine? 🤔😜🤟🏼 However, I personally bought the Orbea Rise M20 with the new EP801 motor and really like it. Super natural feeling. Not as powerful as the Dyname but for a lightweight e-bike, I love it. Thanks for stopping by and congrats on the new steed!
I feel the same in that I feel slightly slower on the climbs and more confident on the downhill. Drops feel much better with the link.
does it have any drag in the pedal assist motor?
@@emtbtrailrider539 sorry for the long delay responding! No it didn’t have any lag. Had a very natural feel to it. Highly recommend the dyname motor!
I didn't know Kurt Russell was into MTB
I like Supply Chain and Wicked Garden to Hold Fast, Hold Tight and Hold My Purse on the way back. Vegas riding. So under rated. Top 5 in the US.
Cheers! Just picked up a C50.
come to powell river and check out the trails here!
Great video! Good details and info. I'll have to make a trip up that way. Looks like great riding!
40 minutes? Can you take a shuttle up? 😅🚲🚲🚲
Ha ha. I wish! No, it’s all leg power and time. But VERY worth it!
for a quick minute i thought Jim Carey rode mtn bikes ?!?!. great detailed review!
Ha ha. Thanks kindly!
Just got the 2022 tallboy cc frame can't wait to put it together
Can you remove and charge battery separately?
@@889811 not that I know of. But the new instinct Powerplay may allow that. Would have to check their website.
Considering this for my TB, thx for the vid
Bout how long did the climb take ya? Edit: crap I didnt watch long enough... about 40 minutes
He didn't even go all the way up! He sort of pointed it out, but there's another 15 minutes of a fairly hard climb... The ride down is absolutely worth it!!
Hey I take that same route. I agree I have a class 1 and sometimes it’s nice to pedal up there and hit the trail without having to load up the bike to my vehicle.
I recently demo'd a pivot switchblade. I found it pedaled as well as my salsa spearfish xc bike and it was super plush in chunk and it was wildly poppy. Have you been on a switchblade? Hows thag compare for you?
Thx for the comment! I too found it rode almost like an XC or trail bike but definitely didn’t find it plush. I loved the “rides like an analog bike” feel but found it not stable enough on the chunk. I’d buy it all day long at half the $12k price though. Never rode a Switchblade but it’s been on my “eventual” bikes I’d love to ride and own. Cheers!
I have both a 2023 Pivot Trail 429 (trail version) and a 2023 Tallboy V5, both are amazing bikes. I would say that the 429 has an edge on the Tallboy in climbing while the Tallboy has a slight edge on the downhill. Pivot does offer the 429 in an enduro version (Fox 36 / 140mm) that would probably compare to your build. I too am planning to upgrade my Tallboy to a Fox 36 140mm and cascade component link to make it essentially a “Highboy.”
What size did you ride? I'm 5 10 and I am in between medium and large
It was a Large. It fit me well and I'm just shy of 5'10".
What size did you ride? I'm 5 10 and I am in between medium and large
It’s nice. But nothing compares to Squamish !
Hmmm. I agree to disagree. Maybe if you only take into account strictly riding. But when I think of “Cumby”, I love it for so much more than just the riding (which is fan-freakin-tastic). It’s on the edge of a lovely little village with donuts, beer, pizza, tacos, a bike shop and so much more! Literally a 2 minute ride from the entry to all the glorious Cumberland loam! Try it. You’ll get addicted! 🎉😘
Like the video, it's helpful but it's an electric motor. You put gas in a engine
Yes, you are right
I think you're exactly right. If you want the best bike for one aspect of MTN biking, the Tallboy isn't for you. If you want to have one really nice bike that you take care of and use for everything, it's one of the best choices. Personally, I'd rather have one 9k bike than two 4.5k bikes. I like not having to choose which will be better for the trail I'll ride that day, and not having to pick which to bring on trips. This is coming from someone with 7 snowboards, but those take up a lot less room in a truck!
Ha ha. Love it! Couldn’t agree more. 7 snowboards, eh? How do you choose from that many?!? 🤷🏼♂️🤔🤗
Bought a sl with the team build. Dropped the XT brakes it came with and put on some code rsc. The bike is sickkkk!
Please its a motor not engine. Driving me crazy.
It's what I like to do....drive people crazy. ; )
@@pedalpoonces 🙃 Yeah I do the same sometimes. Just curious do other riders give you s*** about the ebike. I don't think they understand some of us wouldn't be able with out them.
@@jptherockj2164 Yes. I’ve got a couple riding buddies that think e-bikes shouldn’t be allowed on any regular mtb trails. But most of my riding buddies think they’re awesome.
I needed an motor replacement, almost immediately. Pivot was able to send out a new motor the next day and I was riding in three days total. Excellent service from Pivot. They are by far the most user-friendly manufacturer. I have dealt with with specialized when I did try to call them they just referred me back to the dealer. With Pivot I have relationships already with several people internally and they have worked extremely well with my local bike shop.
Is that soundtrack by Nickelback? Can you wear a cummerbund in Cumberland?
I WiSH!!! It was Nickelback! Ha ha. And no…the cummerbund was made illegal in Cumberland in 1977. 🤷🏼♂️😜🤣
Ep8 motor hmmm
The shuttle sl has the brand new 60 nm Fazua motor. Not the EP8. The shuttle AM has the Ep8. Not a fan of that motor. But I do love the EP8 RS on the Orbea Rise!
I just step upon this video because I’m interest in an bike and I heard the price I was like what da F***.
Yes. Santa Cruz bikes are one of the most expensive brands out there. That being said, they are arguable one of the best brands out there. 🤷🏼♂️🥲😝
@@pedalpoonces good to know. Thanks
Need to ride the shuttle LT, it is awesomeness
27 years on MTBs. Ive owned and ridden countless bikes. Had a V3 Tallboy a few years ago. Great bike but gets overwhelmed on harder trails. Got a V4 Tallboy 2.5 years ago and I agree its the best all around bike Ive ever owned. A little heavy but way more capable and fat on hard trails.
Bingo! Paul Muad! And I hear the V5 is even a tiny bit better than the 4! I’m in no hurry to sell my V4, but is a compelling argument to “upgrade” to new version at some point. For now..I’ll continue to love my TB! Thx for commenting!
Cumberland riding followed by Cumberland donuts is the best.
It truly is! And if you add in a burrito or pizza and beer post-ride...it's Valhalla!!
That chocolate eclair donut 😊
See this picture to the left of this text? That's me hanging off a bike that was attached to a tree in Cumberland! Just a small example of what a great mountain biking mecca that place is! What's your fav place to shred? Bet it's not better than Cumby! 🤗
Cumberland 😂
I have a V1 Megatower no thats a brilliant bike UP AND DOWN , I bought a v4 Tallboy which left my mega garaged for 6 months unit it was warrantied and SC replace the v4 with a v5 cc . Im now so close to selling my Megatower . The v5 is like an ebike up without the motor and way more capable than me down !
Interesting! Now, just curious, why the jump between Mega and TB? Why not split the difference with a Hightower? I mean, all 3 bikes are brilliant in their own ways/categories..just piqued my curiosity! Thx for commenting Steve!
@@pedalpoonces Ive has the v1 mega since it first came to light 4 years ago , i was blown away with the fact its a do anything bike I have done some 50 milers on it and heavy bike park in the Alps . i always had a 2nd bike in a hardtail and thought why not get a more xc type full sus bike . the tallboy was that one , first world problem simply which to ride more .
Groovy Tuesday answer Steve! Great points! Also - a little jelly of you... : )
Amazing and disturbing how the RUclips algorithm puts videos that show a person, way ahead of videos that just show the bike. Hmm? I'm thinkin government profiling & profit for Google.
Likely very true Nomad! I've often found it strange when RUclips/Google does that. Well, thanks for stopping by and commenting!
They have AL Tallboys. I’m about to buy one in Fox 34 myself.
I would agree on a lot here with you. I’ve had the same model Tallboy an regret selling it. I took that bike with stock suspension in some proper enduro trails and it handled it all very well. I also feel like a Hightower is very close. It pedals very well and takes a beating without blinking. At the moment I have a 2022 Bronson Mx, while it’s not as agile going up it compensates going down. I guess can’t have it all in one bike haha. Either way, I would definitely have a Tallboy as an only bike if I had to choose on one bike, slap a cascade link, fox DPX2 shock and 140 36 fox fork and you have yourself a true all arounder. Cheers.
Perfectly said Outdoor Traditions! Couldn’t agree more!
I bought a Fusion 10 today for $727.
Fantastic! Great bike at a great price! Enjoy!
Purchasing one this week. I’ve been riding a Scott Strike and it’s just super heavy. As someone who’s a bit older and has arthritis I’m looking forward to a lighter bike. I do like how it feels when riding it as compared to my Scott.
Fantastic Dolores! They are a great bike. Super nimble and playful. And hopefully with just a bit of tweaking, the Fazua motor will become smoother. Enjoy!!
Why do riders think riding the back tire will keep the front up on a drop??😂😂
Too true! It’s like they are trying to avoid the drop by backing off their bike. 🤣😜 Of course, I’m guilty of it too! Ha ha.
Nanaimo is so sick! Rode Nanaimo and Cumberland last week. Cumberland might be my new favorite place to ride. Feels like Bellingham but has tons of slabs and tech. Nice riding. Gotta check out that first big slab trail. Missed that one.
Thanks LoamerMTB! And yes, both places are awesome! Stay tuned, I got some Cumby riding in an upcoming video. It too is my favourite place to ride....anywhere! Soooo good! But Nanaimo is pretty damn fun too! Cheers and keep shredding! Oh - and have fun on "Sneaky Weasel". It's a shorty but oh so fun.
if your frame cracks with it equipped just make sure not to tell santa cruz you had it on there as they won't honour the warranty 😂
Thx for the tip Jamble! I bought it very lightly used so likely couldn’t use the warranty anyways. But good to know for any future bikes if I add the link! Cheers!
I love seeing the Tallboy in action!
I just bought my 2023 Tallboy C set up with Code brakes and a XT drive train. I’m pretty excited about it! Presently, I am not a very strong descender (I’m a converted roadie) but the Tallboy is going to help me get there. So far this bike is way more capable than I am.
Thanks for commenting Kyle! You’ll love it. Such a fun and capable all around bike. You’ll start craving the trails and completely forget about road riding soon! H ha. Cheers!
Same here. Between my carbon gravel bike, my sport bike motorcycle and my MTB it’s hard to miss pure road riding. Maybe if I did more roadie rides, but these days I associate more with mixed riding.
What’s that dark brown stuff? What’s that green stuff?
It’s better to not know. That way, you won’t spend every waking second planning your MTB bucketlist tour up here!
AHH, i should spend alot of money, because i'm too lazy to use the car that I already have to transport the bike. Brilliant.
ha ha - Right? The downside to riding the e-mtb from your house/office/etc. to the trailhead, in most cases, is you have to road ride to get there! Yucky! But, the upside is more riding time and more exercise! Yaay!
@@pedalpoonces Plus how often is the trail only 9 minutes by ebike away?
@@halnogaies1256 Well, I guess it all depends on how close you live to the trails! In my case, I specifically picked an area that was less than a 10 minute drive to several riding spots. But that’s just me!
I have 2 and they have been life changing. 32 miles and 6700 plus ft of elevation on some of the most fun and beautiful trails a couple of days ago. Adventure is what you make it.
Wow! Love it Jeff! That recent ride sounds incredible!
