Hey Bobby, great video. I noticed your clipboards for documentation. I know I struggled with how to document the worms. It seems very few people have a video of this subject. I've built a spreadsheet that has input fields for what I think is needed and from what little I could find on RUclips. Its good BUT I still have not got into the habit of inputting data like I should. Do you think sometime you could do a fast video on how you document and the data you collect? Do you take your sheet and input into a computer later? I know I'm not the only one struggling on effective documentation.
@@goodwinml great eye brother, I will make one for sure!! I do it just to keep up with how I feed them and the condition of the bin..
Very creative design, Bobby! ~ Sandra

@@dnawormcastings Thanks my friend 🪱🪱🪱
Hi Bobby! Thanks for the explanations ❤. I’ve got a question 😊. If someone has their bin inside in a cooler room (unheated basement, garage, shed, house room) and it’s a regular bin vs your deep totes or Sandra’s large turtle bin, would you recommend keeping the heat mat on top? I’m thinking a less deep, less large bin will dry out much quicker with the mat under it instead of on top…? Even for cocoon bins? To reduce the chance of accidental drying out? A smaller bin would also have way less area/material that isn’t getting some heat benefit from the mat, right? So on top would still heat most of the bin…? You pointed out the benefit of having open areas around the heat mat too. Will this allow the worms, including wisps, to find where they are most temperature comfortable? I guess that was way more than one question! I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience with heat mats! They’re not something I have need for here in Deep South Florida!! 🪱
@@RockinWorms absolutely I would place it on top of shallow tray. But once again I would not run the temperature up , I would put it @ 65 and leave it for a day and go back and check the temperature and make my adjustments from there.
@ Perfect! Thanks!
Thanks Bobby. I have a thermostatically controlled mat under Gilligan, my turtle shaped worm bin. It probably only covers 1/4 of the bottom of the bin (it is outside the bin on the bottom). But, you explained things in a way that made me understand more about what's going on with heat and humidity. ~ Sandra
@@NanasWorms Thanks Sandra, I had to clear up some reason why I have them on top.
Hey!!! Buddy!! How are you?
Do well now that all the snow is gone!! Hopefully I can start getting ready for spring soon!! Got to harvest all my bins🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
@ I hear ya we still have snow. I still can’t get in my yard.
I’m going to try the heat mats on my worm egg bins the might hatching all similar times maybe 🇳🇿🪱
Excellent advice to limit the controllers to 2 heat mats. And great tip about placing cardboard on top to dissipate the heat across the worm bin surface 👍. Now I almost wish I needed heat mats 😂🪱
@@RockinWorms Thanks so much Jayne!! I appreciate you watching and commenting 🪱🪱🪱
Good video, Bobby. A few people made tragic mistakes with overheating heat pads or food composting on their bins. I also always use a thermostat to ensure I don't get into problems. ~ Sandra
Absolutely Sandra, I like to have two points of measurement, just don’t fully trust the thermostat alone. Thanks for watching 🪱🪱🪱

Grand Son or Grand Daughter ?
It’s a grand son💕💕
Your worms look amazing! You’re definitely going to have castings to use / sell come Spring. It’s amazing how hard worms work. When’s your grandson due to arrive? How exciting!
@@marymccusker8133 absolutely, they are truly underrated.. she is 8 weeks so we have some time before my new best friend comes to the farm 💕💕💕
My worms are in 7 bins in a 40-degree basement waiting for spring. I may put a heat mat on some of them in a week or two. This morning it was -14-degrees outside, and I do not want to wake them too early. Wisconsin
That is a smart move, let them sleep until the real Spring arrives.
0 Degree F here tonight. I'm done with winter and ready to move on to Spring and better weather. I have had my European worms for a month and I haven't seen a single cocoon. Is that normal to not see cocoons for a month after setting up and they were nice mature worm? I'd really like to get enough worms for fishing and feeding my chickens.
Yes it is, they have to get used to their new environment, when the conditions for them are right they will start producing. I don’t know how wet your bin may be but ,ENC like a moist bin. Try running it a little bit wetter than you have it and see how it does.🪱🪱🪱
@@nusoilwormfarm7980 I didn't want to sour the bed but i did check and it is needing a little moisture as the shredded cardboard soaked up the extra. The temp is doing well and they are very active near the top. Thanks
When spring hits u will have plenty of worms to sell 🇳🇿🪱
That’s the goal brother🪱🪱🪱
BEAUTIFUL Rottie, Bobby.
Thanks my friend, he is a mess!!
Hi Bobby, my heat mat is underneath my large outdoor bin (Gilligan). I keep a thermostat on it so the temperature doesn't run out of control. I started my RUclips channel to show my granddaughter my worms - now we have three grandchildren. Best time of my life! Congratulations 🎉 🥳 ~ Sandra
Thanks Sandra! That's awesome that you're sharing your worm journey with your grandkids. Heck I have my first one on the way a baby boy!! That’s why I said I don’t trust the ones that come with it, I keep a check on mine.. Thanks for watching 🤗🤗
Can't wait for spring! Garen and worms!
Absolutely!!! I will have a lot of work ahead of me 🪱🪱 tons of new soil soldiers on the way😆😆
M My 1st ever 1 pound of reds I thought I bought from everyone's favorite Uncle on Amazon around Thanksgiving 2024 (Hell I was a newbie worm person), I got the dreaded mix!!! I didn't realize this then, My wife saw I had added them to my Amazon list and bought me 4 more pounds from them for Christmas 2024. I now have 5000+ mix bin. Fn POS seller!!! Don't care how big they are, they are taking ADVANTAGE of newbies tryin' to learn. Make a fast buck and forget the customer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just bought 1000 cocoons from Rockin Worms. They showed up today. They are going into a new 27 gallon bin and in the near future they will go into a new DIY 2x2x4 CFT with cutting bar and a shoot that directs cuttings to a 5 foot conveyor belt to remove castings to a bin. These fool companies that claim REDS and you get a mix, THEY have forgotten or never cared, they just want the $$$$! THEY take ADVANTAGE of the newbies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@goodwinml I totally agree, after a few missteps I know my stock is pure, after getting burned a few times I learned the difference real fast!! I will not mislead anyone for a dollar I don’t want that kind of recognition!!
Hi, I was just on the phone with Jayne at Rockin Worms. She told me about you and this page. I just got cocoons from her. She told me that you used heat pads. I have 3 pads for my seed germination every year. I want to use one for my new cocoons. The room that they will be in stays at 65 in the winter. My heat mat has a digital temp setting. What would you say would be the perfect temp to set so they cocoons think it's time to hatch if they are ready? I just subscribed here, new next rabbit hole for videos to watch! lol
@@goodwinml Hey thank for subscribing!! Jayne is awesome 🪱🪱🪱 I keep mine between 75 & 81 in your case 81 would be the number to stay at, I would place the bin on top of the mat and turn the bin once a week to distribute the heat and to check on moisture.
As a born in Michigan girl, moved to FLORIDA 40 years ago, snow can actually protect your worms. Pack it around. Hay, and straw helps too. Good luck!
I'm sure you are right, thanks for the insight!!!
Also-do you sell ENC?
I did when I started off but people were only purchasing the Pure Reds. I may order some in and try them again.

Have you ever had raccoons get into your bins? I saw years ago that one outdoor farm have a real problem with them. Just found your channel and subbed #387sub. I just started two tote bins of Europeans for my personal use for fishing in mid December so I am pretty new. I have plenty of oak leaf litter/leaf mold for bedding along with some chicken house dust (dry dropping dust and feed feed dust) from my 5 bantams I can use to feed them occasionally. Not sure how much of that is permissible so I just sprinkled a little on the top an mixed it in to begin with. I don't want to "burn" them. They seemed to like it when I left one small corner on top and they came up to eat it. I have a cover crop of oats on my garden and used some in my one bed along with some frost killed comfrey leafs. I look forward to watching your videos and gaining some insight into my small worm farm.
@@MrOldclunker Thanks for subscribing to my channel, I really appreciate it!! I don’t have problems with raccoons but squirrels on the other hand try my patience, when I feed pumpkins to the worms. @@nusoilwormfarm7980 Surenits nice now but it was brutal this summer. And I lost those worms on my patio due to the heat. I’m sure I can do better there with the hard lessons I learned but even if I can get the worms to be ok in that heat, it’s too hot for ME to work them 🥵. It’s all trade offs, isn’t it?! @nusoilwormfarm7980 would you be willing to post a link to the heat mats you got? I believe I'm gonna use the heat tape as it fits within my extra large bins very well but I think I would also like to try and separate bin with just a heat mat and see what does better with my climate.
