The Collected Writings of John Murray (4 Volume Set) Unboxing // Content Preview & First Reaction
I probably could have used hearing this intro piece before building my 500+ theology/Bible aid book collection. 😬
I spend waaay too much money on books related to Bible content. The problem is just one theology book alone can be over $50. I guess I justify it by rarely eating out or having any expensive hobbies. 🤷 That said I frequent my local Christian thrift store weekly and have found some real treasures for dirt cheap.
Thank you for this informative video brother! Really loving your channel. How did these compare to the green six value version that you can buy on Amazon and Christian books? Do they contain the same sermons?
@@ChrisGSTL Great question, I’m actually working on a script/research for a video right now that I hope to release next month that will talk through the various published collections of Spurgeon’s sermons, how then compare, and how to get access to all of them. To answer your question, no. The Hendrickson Five Hardback green set (which contains 10 volumes in 5 books, two volumes per book) has 250 of Spurgeon’s finest sermons with a subject & biblical text index. Super helpful, but not all of Spurgeon’s sermons. The RHB Green ones in this video are the first 6 volumes of the exhaustive 63 volume set that has a total sermon count of 3,563 Spurgeon sermons when you have all 63 volumes. So, is the Hendrickson set a good sample of Spurgeon’s preaching, yes. But 250 is not the exhaustive 3,563. Nor is this first installment from RHB the full 3,563 (but actually only the first 347 sermons in 6 volumes). Hope that helps you make a decision.
@ This is very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for your recommendations and the research behind those recommendations. Three other sites worth visiting: Ligonier (of course), Crown and Covenant, and the PCA Bookstore. All three are worth visiting throughout the year.
You put a ton of work and research into this, and I am very grateful! I've had to learn some of these tips on my own over a course of 30 years of book buying. Thanks so much!
Great information … thanks. I love Crossway but being in Canada the shipping cost is so high that it can double my purchase depending. I appreciate using their website as well. I wish Crossway would improve their shipping outside the US. I would buy directly for sure! Thanks again Joe … great channel!
Thanks for the video, really appreciate that. I am from Chile, i don’t know where there is the lowest price of shipping form usa to chile. I think that all your international subscribers would love to see a video where you give some tips for buying books from countries outsides of usa
For example, when I got the Reformed Dogmatics I payed literally 50 dollars just for shipping :(, that´s crazy.
@@Martiin._ Thank you so much for this comment. I fully agree I should do something on that soon, and even if there are not great tricks of savings. Letting those in the US know what our brothers and sisters in Christ face when trying to get good resources (Bibles, books, etc) to their country would be a good thing to raise awareness of. Thanks for the idea.
I'm going to start O Come O Come Emmanuel.
@@CodyBuchanan700 Nice! I read that last year & just released a review video of it. Excellent resource!
@Back2theWord I'm watching that right now:) I found it on Amazon for 14 bucks and I've wanted it last year when it was 30 bucks.
I was looking for information about good Christmas books. Thank you! I heartily want to encourage you to go on with this channel, it is not about the quantity, but the quality. It is a struggle for me these days and I pray for God's people to use the talents He has given them. 🙏🏻
Thank you for the video! I would lime to read this book someday. Btw, the countdown on the right is quite helpful. I appreciate what you do on this channel🙏🏻 Blessings!

Wow great book list and I look forward to your reviews of these books! 😊
Nice briefing.
Any thoughts about the NASB 2020? 🤔 My thoughts so far, which I'm still processing and might change as I continue to read the NASB 2020: 1. Of course, JMac didn't like the NASB 2020 for various reasons (e.g. using "brothers and sisters" instead of "brethren"). Hence JMac and TMC did the LSB. And I think it's probably true that the LSB is the NASB95 "perfected" as James White said. But what if someone likes the NASB 2020? 2. I have been going through the NASB 2020. In my view, I don't think it's a feminist translation at all. Its use of phrases like "brothers and sisters" and "person" and so on seems to me to be very conservative. I think the "feminist agenda" stuff is overblown. 3. Importantly, I find the NASB 2020 to be extremely readable, by which I mean clear and natural sounding. If someone asks what's your name and I say "I am the one whom people call John" it is clear in that most native English speakers understand what I mean. But it is not natural because that's not how most native English speakers normally talk. It'd be clear and natural to simply say "My name is John". I think the NASB 2020 reads a lot more smoothly than the NASB95 as well as the LSB eithh regard to clarity and naturalness. In fact I think the NASB 2020 reads almost as smoothly as, say, the CSB and the NIV, both of which are known to read very smoothly. 4. In a sense, the NASB 2020 seems to be a more "literal" (formally equivalent) version of the CSB or the NIV (and the CSB seems more literal than the NIV). 5. Just my preliminary thoughts for now. But I'm still reading the NASB 2020. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on the NASB 2020? 😊
Please remember: Jesus sang the psalms! If your church does't consciously sing the psalms, ask your pastor why your church doesn't sing the songs comforted and guided Jesus and that he used to sing the praises of his heavenly Father. There's a long tradition of translating the psalms into rhyming poetry like hymns and then singing them to hymn tunes. Here's some resources for singing Psalms to hymn tunes. The "KJV" of psalters is the 1650 Scottish Psalter, however there are a number of modern language psalters. Crown and Covenant have published "The Book of Psalms for Worship" for the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America. The Free Church of Scotland have produced "Sing Psalm" and the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Ireland have published "The Psalms for Singing, a 21st Century Version." We're not a Psalms Only church but we regularly sing psalms as part of our "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs." (See Eph 5:19 & Col 3:16). Does your church?
Looks like it'll be a great video! Can't wait! 😊 Currently my favorite commentary on the Psalms is the great Alec Motyer's little known commentary in the New Bible Commentary. There's so much helpful information, wisdom and insight, and pastoral edification in that little commentary. For example, David Gibson has written (I believe) the single best exposition on Psalm 23 titled The Lord of Psalm 23, and in this book Gibson openly acknowledges his indebtedness to Motyer and Gibson states he used Motyer's framework or structure for Psalm 23.
Love this video! I wish there was more psalm-singing in the modern church. Only recently did it strike me how central the Psalms were to the life of the church and the Christian for 1000+ years! The psalms have helped me to grow in emotional maturity, in regulating my emotions as the Lord would want me to
@@hewziheng4587 I hear you. I don’t believe Psalms should be the only songs sung in the church (like some do), but I grew up in churches that rarely sang them (or at least I didn’t realize it) and I wish I had experienced that more up to this point of my life.
Observation: pretty books, but unboxing videos are not helpful unless there is content about the books themselves. Suggestion: don’t do unboxing, but quick , concise review of the books. Some things that would help-observations on margins and page weight for note taking. How well the book sits in the hand (some are very unwieldy). How are the chapters laid out? Footnote-are they valuable? How does this compare with other whole Psalter commentaries? How about sub-group commentaries? How much does it cost? Is this part of a larger project or series? And, if possible, in a chart that could be linked to on a website so I could download. My reason? I have too many books but want valuable resources. If this is one, and I think it might be, I need significant help making that decision before I devote a quarter of a shelf to a commentary. Thank you! Would love to hear back 😊
Great video :)
Jesus isn’t in the Psalms.
@@anthonyjames4319 Hmmmm, 🤔 what is your faith background? Just curious. And I am pretty sure Christian tradition (but I could stand corrected) has always understood that the Messianic Savior King promised across the Psalter and the promises he fulfills point to Jesus, for all God’s promises are yes in Him (being Christ) (2 Cor. 1:20).
@ I do not equate being Christian tradition with being true.
@anthonyjames4319 He is -- He said so himself :) (C.f. Ps 110 & Matt 22:41-46 specifically, and then see Luke 24:44 more generally).

Just received this book and I am very exited to get into it. Thanks for the recommendation
Put the true Hebrew name of God back into the scripture and read it again... God (John 4:24 - God is a spirit) has made this YHWSH (Hebrew name Angel declared to Mary & Joseph when this son was born) whom you crucified both YHWH (Exodus 3:15 - Name revealed to Moses at burning bush that would be his name forever and a memorial to all generations) & Messiah. God has made this YHWSH whom you crucified both YHWH & Messiah. Philippians 2:10-11 - every knee shall bow & every tongue confess that YHWSH is YHWH. There is only one God, his name is YHWH YHWSH, he came to earth to save his people from their sin. He did not need to send another. Isaiah 59:16 - His own arm (Hebrew idiom for power) would bring salvation to Himself. The name matters; Acts 4:12 KJV - Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Joe you said in this unboxing that you would set up a reading plan. Have you been able to do this yet and if so can you share it? Thanks.
Yes I made it to the end a great review very interesting,
I like Eric Metaxas. 😊 He has done a lot of good for Christians in general and for American Christians in particular. He has a popular show that's interesting to listen to because he often invites interesting guests. He is indeed a great writer, and no wonder since he was an English literature major from Yale University as I recall. My personal favorite thing from Metaxas is his Socrates in the City forum because he usually does hilarious introductions for his guests and more importantly his guests are usually world class intellectuals. Such as Stephen Meyer, John Lennox, Os Guinness, etc. Metaxas is largely a popularizer, not an intellectual heavyweight himself, but he really does a wonderful job at helping get out the ideas of intellectual heavyweights.
Are these one of among few of the sermons not available online?
Viable, meaningful variants are less than 1% (just an fyi).
Also oldest does not mean most accurate despite the critical text bias for the Alexandrian texts.
Christians are so terrified of the fact that people different from them exist that it's actually kind of hilarious.
Wow!! A man from SBC agreeing with Megan that’s the first.. What about what’s happening with TGC?
I presented on Kingdom Through Covenant as a class project and from my understanding I don't think you missed anything major. There is a sense that it isn't really disagreeing with Covenant theology all that much, it's just more emphatic about the pluralism of covenant's and OT distinctions than the Federalist view Particular Baptist's have held for a long time.
Thanks a lot for the video!
Honestly, I need someone, a native speaker, to say if there are any mistakes in my poems, as English is my second language. I don't have any English-speaking friends. Maybe someone could help🙏🏻

Regarding the LSB, I came across the following words (below) from the biblical scholar Iain Duguid who wrote them on Puritan Board. I thought they might be helpful. Duguid is a Reformed Presbyterian Old Testament professor at Westminster Theological Seminary with a PhD from the University of Cambridge, he has published many popular as well as scholarly books, and he worked on the HCSB/CSB translation. After qualifying that translation is difficult work that shouldn't be underappreciated and that he hasn't spent extensive time with the LSB, Duguid writes: I think some of their [LSB translators'] most trumpeted distinctions are fundamentally wrong-headed. Take the use of Yahweh throughout for the divine name. I get the attractiveness of that, and in some contexts it really pops as a translation. Think "I am Yahweh" or "Yahweh said to my lord" (Ps 110:1). In other places, however, it messes with people's favorite translations, for example: "Yahweh is my shepherd". That's why the HCSB went with Yahweh in some places and "the LORD" elsewhere - but that leaves you with some really strange alternations between the two, which is why the CSB ditched Yahweh completely. More importantly, it drives a wedge between the testaments, since the NT quotation of an OT passage often doesn't match. Even more importantly, the average reader won't now see that the NT is calling Jesus the same title as the OT calls Yahweh, "the Lord". If it is good enough for Jesus to use kurios when translating Yahweh, I can't think why "the LORD" isn't good enough for us. The same problem exists for the much-trumpeted doulos = slave in all contexts translation. There are some places where doulos certainly ought to be translated slave. But there are plenty of other places where "servant" is a more apt rendition into English of the person's role. The result is a flattening of the Biblical text that results in a loss of nuance. It also - once again - threatens to put a rift between the OT and the NT; for example, according to this understanding Zech 3:8 ought to speak of "my slave, the Branch" (since LXX has doulos); fortunately, the translation goes for a more sensible (and traditional) "my servant, the Branch"). Very few words in one language always translate into a single word in another language: that's just not how languages work; so for example, ruach should be rendered breath, Spirit and wind, sometimes all within a short space (e.g. Ezek. 37:1-14). That's why nobody (except perhaps Youngs literal translation, which completely misrepresents the meaning of Ezekiel 37 because of its overly literal translation) adopts a consistently literal translation policy. Everyone (including the LSB) uses a more dynamic translation sometimes.
Great Review! Found your channel looking for a Wellum Systematic Theology review. Keep doing these kind of videos! And if I may recommend another book I've discovered recently on marriage. It is from Doug Goodin - God's design for Marriage. Doug is New Covenant Theology, so his approach is a bit unique in some areas.
I know this is an old video but it is worth correcting that William Tyndale did not translate the New Testament into English from Latin. He translated from the original Greek. Using Erasmus’ 1522 revision of his New Testament( later nicknamed the Textus Receptus). This is important because there are actually people who believe and spread the misinformation that our modern Bible is a result of being filtered through different languages. It is not. It is translated from the original languages, Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic that the Bible was written in. Wycliffes English translation, however, which was the first English translation of the New Testament, was translated from the Latin Vulgate . None of our modern translations are based off of Wycliffes English translation.
