Turning a barren yard in a region with only 300 millimeters of annual rain into a sustainable garden is no small feat. Yet, I'm taking on the challenge to create an eco-friendly, low-maintenance oasis that can thrive in a dry climate.
Starting from scratch, I cleared weeds, debris, and compacted soil to lay the groundwork. My plan includes distinct zones for native plants, a vegetable garden, and a relaxation area. Composting and rainwater harvesting are key components to boost sustainability, while drip irrigation ensures water efficiency.
Choosing drought-tolerant plants like succulents, cacti, and hardy herbs allows me to create a lush garden with minimal water. As the garden takes shape, wildlife is starting to return, with birds and bees finding new homes among the plants.
Though the journey is far from over, each step brings new insights. Join me as I continue to transform this arid yard into a thriving garden. Let's grow together!

Quick check on the garden. Not much happening because it's too hot. Week of mid to high 30's here in South Australia. Actually it seems like it's around those temperatures every day anyway. icked some gherkins, so if anyone has some good pickling recipes leave them in the comments

Let's take a look at some new and easy to do Garden Arches, see how the tomatoes and red cauliflowers are growing and check on the banana trees, including a new red dwarf banana that I've recently planted.
Bushfire and my Garden Tour

Hey Guys, We've had bushfires here on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. I'm a member of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade and the last week has kept us a bit busy. 6 calls in 8 days. The biggest fire burnt out about 540 Ha of scrub but we managed to stop it getting a hold in the adjoining barley crop which was fully matured and ready for harvest. We lost about 5 Ha of the barley. Check out ...
Spring Update to Mick's Garden.

Here's a quick update to show what's grown and what hasn't at the start of spring. Some greenery has begun to emerge, with a few spots showing new signs of life and color. Other areas are still waiting for that extra warmth to wake them up, remaining dormant for now. The garden is slowly transitioning, with early signs of growth scattered here and there, but it’s clear that a bit more time will...
Spring has arrived...well officially it will tomorrow. But the garden doesn't look at the calendar.

Quick over fly of my garden with the drone showing just how dry it is here at the moment.

I promised a drone video of my garden, well here it is. Don't bother critiquing the drone flying, I never professed to being a pilot. I'm sure I'll improve with age but at this point I was just focused on not hitting the powerlines. :)
Pruning my Fruit Trees or How to Butcher Fruit Trees
Просмотров 86 месяцев назад
I bought this property 3 years ago and am slowly transforming the yard so I have a little bit of entertaining space and as much food production as I can manage. I inherited several fruit trees which had never been pruned. Last year I cut the absolute crap out of them to bring them down to a more manageable size. In a few cases I cut around 3 or 4 metres off them. Suffice to say that my last har...

I live in Qld and we are getting rain at the moment, your garden looks wonderful, Cheers!🍻
Where about in SA are you mate? With regard to the cherries what bump are you looking at? You’re not talking about the extrafloral nectaries?
Thanks Jullian, now I know what they are.. damn, was hoping for cherries but that would explain all the ants. Maybe next year. I'm in Kimba.
@ my cherry is in its second year in the ground. Probably 2.5metre and only put out a couple of cherries. Yet it’s my morellos first year, 1.2metres and easily put over 50. Hope you stay cool this weekend 🤙🏽 Jullian from the Adelaide hills. @laffertygardens
Good job
New subscriber and fellow gardener watching from Qld, love your yard, Cheers!🌿
Well done mate, good to see someone gardening in a hotter , drier climate than Queensland or Tassie

Those are some fabulous looking cat toilets 😂
Those are some impressive looking fruit trees!
They are, but not as impressive looking as the guy looking after them. 😂
@@MicksAussieGarden how about we agree to disagree on that point 😝
yahoo. Omg! so good drone~ Micksaussiegarden!🖐
I would put a lot more logs in the bottom of the raised bed and then tons of weeds as they are full of minerals and free. I had great success growing potatoes on top of my weeds and veg scraps in a rhubarb forcer pot with hardly any soil. They grew huge. The idea of the rhubarb forcer is that it’s open on the bottom like your beds so the worms can easily get in . When the plants sprout I leave the lid off. The point is, that we need way less soil than we think we do
Thanks heaps for your suggestions. Unfortunately everything here is at a premium, even weed's and logs. I had given some thought to putting a couple of bales of straw in the bottom but even they are difficult to source here. It all keeps life interesting. 😂
That digger did the trick Mick! Cheers 😉👍
You got that right!
